Q:I have an oil-based painted driveway and top sealer. The garage floor is bare concrete. Will rinsing off the Concrete Etch and Cleaner on the garage floor damage the driveway paint/sealer as the mixture of cleaner and water flows onto it?

Q:Do we have to etch the basement floor before priming and painting? It was painted. We have removed the old paint via power washer and paint stripper. It has been thoroughly rinsed. 95% of the paint is gone with just random bits left.

Not strong enough to etch
When I poured it directly onto the floor it was strong enough to etch only where the product initially touched. When I deluded it according to the directions and equal parts with water it did not etch the floor. It was not strong enough to remove efflorescence even at full strength. I was using a stiff threshold nylon deck brush and a wire brush and even at full strength it did not remove the efflorescence.

Thank you for sharing your experinece. If the area has heavier efflorescence, a second application of Rust-Oleum Concrete Etch and Cleaner may be needed, or a separate efflorescence remover should be used.

That is odd to hear! Our Rust-Oleum Clean & Etch for Concrete does not contain any ingredient that can change the color of concrete surfaces, however, remnants of the cleaner may discolor the surface slightly if not fully rinsed away. We recommend rinsing the surface again thoroughly, using a pressure nozzle on a hose if possible to ensure all remnants of the cleaner are removed. Once the cleaner has been removed, the concrete should no longer foam when rinsed. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

That's odd, Frank! Rust-Oleum Concrete Clean and Etch is intended for use on bare, unsealed and uncoated concrete surfaces. This product must also be thoroughly rinsed from the surface after application. The solution should not dry on the surface. It is also key that the whole container is mixed with one gallon of water.

Purchased product to prepare garage floor for painting. Cleaner floor twice and allowed floor to dry for 3 days before painting. Used same brand of garage floor paint. Allowed paint to cure for a week before parking on it and it still lifted. Waste of $250 in paint and supplies.

That's not what we expect to hear! Please keep in mind, Rust-Oleum Concrete Etch and Cleaner also needs to be used with a degreaser product to help prep bare concrete. You also want to ensure that a splash test is preformed to test for a sealer on the surface. If a sealer is present, it will need to be ginded off prior to coating.

Let's see what we can figure out! Rust-Oleum Clean & Etch For Concrete is an etching solution used to clean and degrease bare concrete surfaces to improve penetration and adhesion of coatings, paints, stains and sealants. When the diluted solution is applied to bare concrete and agitated with a stiff bristle broom, it will begin to fizz. This fizzing will only on bare concrete, if there is no fizzing that indicates the concrete is sealed.
