Q:I’m planning on using rust oleum epoxy floor paint in our laundry room. There are a couple places where the finish layer of concrete has flaked off, leaving small rocks visible. In using a wire brush they seem very secure. Would this work prior to epoxy ?

Answer This Question

A:  Great question! Yes, Rust-Oleum Concrete Patch and Repair Kit can be used to help repair the surface prior to coating. Make sure everything loose is removed and that the patch is allowed to dry as directed prior to coating. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

This filler mixes well and is very easy to apply. It has a smooth consistency to get into the cracks. You will probably need to apply it again on some of the deep cracks because when t dries, it actually settles in the cracks. I applied it a second time to some of the big cracks and then sanded the floor to get the floor flat. I tried using my orbital with 60 grit and then my belt sander with 50 grit and both were taking too much time to get the floor back to level. I ended up using my 4" diamond floor grinder to level the floor and it went very fast. Once it was level I started my top coat. It looks great.

I am putting epoxy coating on my carport floor and need to a product to fill in cracks, dents, and otherwise ugly areas that might make my carport makeover less than successful. For really big cracks and breakage I first filled it with concrete fill before using this product--which is only rated to fill 1/2" cracks and breaks. This worked great and after the concrete dried I filled the top with this concrete patch. The instructions recommended putting two coats which usually wasn't necessary except some rather deep fills where there was some settling during drying of the first coat. Now here is the important point to note: you might need to wait a full day or more for the patch to fully dry when it is a somewhat thick patch--especially when you do a second coat. So allow ample time to dry before putting on the epoxy or paint finish on the floor. Second important point: this stuff is REALLY hard once it dries, this is NOT wood filler or dry wall that smooths out with a light swipe of sandpaper. It's more resembles smoothing out a piece or rough concrete! I am not exaggerating. What worked for me is (1) try and make the patch as smooth and flush as possible when you put it on; (2) use a belt sander with 50 grit sandpaper followed by fine sanding with a vibrating sander with 60 grid sandpaper. Finally, I did a final touch up with concrete patch where it wasn't completely smooth and did a final sand the next day. This effort was again for a concrete car port floor, so if you are just touching up a wall that will be covered by sheet rock or not in a high traffic area, then less care is necessary. Good luck and happy sanding. If you don't have a power sander in a situation that requires a nice finish, then you might want to consider another product or take extra care in applying this patch material smoothly to the concrete. Simple hand sanding even with 60 grid sandpaper is not a practical option--especially on a big area job! It is a great product but requires some real work to make it look great and fill defects on the surface--hence the less than five star rating.

I had to tackle the resurfacing of my concrete front porch/patio. I used several products to prep the concrete also made by Rustoleum (paint stripper, etch & clean), but this was what I went with to fill cracks and such vs. bagged concrete patch mixes and that full process. I'm pleased with the outcome. This was simple to mix and work with. It dried well and once sanded with a 180 grit sanding sponge it lightened the dried coloration and smoothed it out nicely. I saw some comments on here regarding how it dries and its coloration being an issue, but what I found to be a great sealant/cover was BEHR's concrete paint with the Slate Grey color. It's slightly darker than the grey tint of this epoxy and looks nice once dried and cured. Providing pictures for reference: After the epoxy dried/before paint, first coat, final coat.

The directions were easy to follow and it was fairly easy to apply the product. The mixture dried in a few hours and the repair was as hard as what was stated on the box. The best thing about it: does not crack or shrink. I feel that this product will last longer than other options I have used to fix concrete cracks and general concrete repair.

I had damaged concrete from water softener salt. After etching the floor and making sure the rest of the concrete was stabil I used the patch and it performed well. Getting ready to epoxy the floor this week and we will see how that goes.

Worked well for what I needed, which was filling cracks in my garage floor in preparation for an epoxy coating. I needed something that would harden and be just as tough as the concrete. You definitely need to work fast if the entire kit is mixed at once. Having a second set of hands would have helped immensely or just mix what you need and go slower than I did. I did have to grind down some of the excess but wanted to have it flush with the floor. Product was a little pricey in my opinion but overall it was just what I needed to do the job right the first time. Have just applied the product so hopefully it will last a long time.
