A: Happy to help, Greg! The Rust-Oleum Home Clear Floor Topcoat is intended for use over the Home Floor Base Coat only. Instead, a Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Polyurethane may be a better choice for you.

Q:Can I use some sort of paint between the base coat and top coat if I don’t like any of the color choices?
by|Dec 2, 2023

Answer This Question
A: Happy to help, Jennifer! To ensure the best results, we do not recommend using a different paint between the base and clear coat. Please keep in mind, the Rust-Oleum Home Tint Base Coatings can be custom tinted at Home Depot stores. We offer a white/light and a dark/deep tint base option. The Paint Counter at your local store can help further with custom color tinting.

Horrible Coverage
Surface was cleaned and primed prior to application. Used the recommended roller and 3/8 nap roller. The coverage is spotty, streaky, and awful. It will absolutely need two coats and we will have to purchase another can. It states that two coats aren’t recommended. I wish we had just used regular paint for the stairs! It is thick and goopy, but applies watery and streaky. Very unhappy. We are not novice painters, and have painted just about every other surface on the house with no issue.

Hi Johnnie, our Rust-Oleum Home Floor Coating Kit states that the white color requires 2 coats. This can be found on the kit box under Specifications: Kit Coverage: 100 Sq. Ft. (White Requires 2 Coats). The Base Coat may be recoated after 6 hours. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

Very good coverage and easy to apply. Used approximately 1.5 qt per 15x15 room, so make sure you get more than you think you’ll need based on label.
Top coat applies easily also and makes the floor beautiful! I have semi gloss on mine.
Top coat is CRITICAL and needs to be applied asap! Floor paint dries to a very “sticky” finish and once top coat dries it feels hard and smooth.
Amazed how great the floors turned out. (They had been previously painted, so I cleaned by sweeping/vacuuming and followed with damp mopping with a “crud cutting” solution to remove remaining dirt and grime.
Highly recommend this product.
Happy I didn’t have to sand or prime before painting!!!

Tint to any color!!
I had tinted this to the dark grey that was recommended on the box… it was too light and blue-ish.
There’s a cohesive color theme in my downstairs … and this color floor threw everything off.
I bought a second box and tinted it “Trail Print”. At first I was told I could only use the recommended colors on the box. It took a few extra minutes to color match the HD swatch… I love it!!! The texture in the vinyl floor is visible.
Shower was done in the tub and tile refinish product.

I love the simplicity of the product. I needed something quick to put down in three bedrooms we had after pulling carpet so we could get moved in pretty quickly this was the answer. If you plan to use this just make sure any glue on floor is completely up or it will pull through once the semi-gloss is painted on which was weird it did not do it with the base coat alone. Overall I'm very pleased with the turn out, should be said I was not looking for perfection and this was my first time using the product. Only complaint is quantity it took 2 kits per room and that was spreading pretty thin still. Just needs to be sold in bigger cans.

Not waterproof!
Bought this coating for basement laundry room. Followed the instructions to a T, including 24hr drying time after applying the topcoat. Yesterday discovered that a small water leak led to blistering along the entire path.

Let's talk about this, Dave! While the Rust-Oleum Home Floor Coating System is water-resistant, it is not considered a waterproof coating. Prolonged exposure to water on the surface will cause it to blister and peel. Any moisture issues on the floor can also cause blistering if it seeps up under the coating. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Plan to spend twice as much as what it shows
First off, home depot will give you an estimated arrival of 5 days but you won't receive it for 2 weeks. 1qt will not cover what it says it will, plan to double your order for stated sqft. I pt 2 coats on the floor and there old floor color still shows through.

Change Maker
I wanted to do something about our linoleum floor in both of our bathrooms for years now. I wanted a cheap and quick alternative. I saw this product on Pinterest. What a game changer! It has completely changed our bathrooms. It brought them into this decade. I went with the Icy Gray base coat and the semi-gloss top coat. It came out so beautiful. I got fancy and decided to purchase and extra quart of ultra white for my stencil design. Follow the instructions and you won't be disappointed.

Did a very good job. Recommend 2 coats each rather than one and one.

I’d give it 10 stars!
I watched videos on this product and was hoping it could improve the look of the old tile entryway. It sure delivered!! Very easy to use and the results are awesome! Don’t know yet how it will hold up to the traffic, but it looks great now!
