Questions & Answers

I already painted my floor with a behr paint, can I still use step 2 on that or must I repaint with your step 1?

Answer This Question

We're happy to help, Michele. Our Rust-Oleum HOME Floor Coating Clear Topcoat is only intended to be applied as a topcoat of the Rust-Oleum HOME Floor Coating Bond Coat. If you intend to use it with another brand we recommend first applying a small test application in an inconspicuous area to ensure the results are as desired. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Can you stencil on base coat before applying top coat and if so is there a specific type of paint I should use?

    Answer This Question

Great question, Shelley. Yes, stencils can be used with Rust-Oleum HOME Floor Coating to create a custom design. We do not have any specific stencil recommendations, just be sure you remove the stencil while the paint is still tacky before it can fully dry. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

We just completed our Rust Oleum floor kit and like the product and results but we don't like the color. Bad choice on our part. Is it ok to do another kit with a different color over the top of the fresh sealed floor we just completed? Thanks

      Answer This Question

Happy to help, Rod! If you want to change the color, simply sand the surface with 80-grit sandpaper, vacuum up the sanding residue, and then make sure the floor is completely clean and dry before starting over with the Step 1 Base Coat. Allow 6 hours before applying the Step 2 Top Coat. — Rust-Oleum Product Support 15

Will this paint work over asbestos tile in an older home? The tile are in great shape and I do not want to disturb them.

        Answer This Question

Great question! The Rust-Oleum Home Floor Coating Step 1 Base Coat can be applied over asbestos tile. It is not an encapsulator, but because there is no sanding involved, it is appropriate to use. Don't forget to apply the Rust-Oleum Home Step 2 Top Coat after 6 hours! https://www.homedepot.com/s/rust-oleum%20home%20step%202%20topcoat?NCNI-5 — Rust-Oleum Product Support 15

          Answer This Question

Happy to help, Andrea! Allow 24 hours after applying the Rust-Oleum Home Step 2 Top Coat for light foot traffic. You can apply new caulk after 24 hours. Allow 72 hours before replacing furniture, but avoid dragging it across the surface. Full cure is 7 days, so do not wash the floor before 7 days. — Rust-Oleum Product Support 15

Can Kiltz primer be used prior to the base coat? Can a different brand of top coat be used over the base coat?
            ByJun 28, 2025
            1 Answer |
            Answer This Question

We are glad to help, Diana! We have not tested Kilz primer under the Rust-Oleum Home Step 1 Base Coat, so we cannot guarantee the performance of our product if a primer is used. Furthermore, we cannot recommend a topcoat other than the Rust-Oleum Home Step 2 Top Coat for over the Step 1 Base Coat. — Rust-Oleum Product Support 15

Can this clearcoat be used over Rustoleum concrete and garage floor paint plus primer?

              Answer This Question

We are happy to clarify, Tony. Rust-Oleum Home Floor Coating Step 2 Top Coat is for interior use only and for use over the Home Floor Coating Step 1 Base Coat. The clear topcoat recommended for use over the Concrete and Garage Floor Paint is the Rust-Oleum Concrete and Garage Clear Finish Topcoat. Finishes available are gloss, matte and textured satin. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-1-gal-Gloss-Clear-Concrete-and-Garage-Floor-Finish-Topcoat-320202/301068197 — Rust-Oleum Product Support 15

                Answer This Question

Veronica, great question! No, Rust-Oleum Home Floor Coating is designed to use both parts of the system and is not a stand-alone product. At this time, we do not offer a coating that would provide the desired finish. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 10

                  Amazing Product
I love this product. I was able to completely transform two areas where I hated the tile. These floors once ugly are now a conversation starter.

                    New color tile
This is a good product - We scrubbed the floors prior to painting with the solution the kit provided. The paint went on easier however definitely required two coats. After several weeks the paints has held up pretty well however we have several chips in high traffic areas. Good but it is not like new tile in the least.

We bought this to cover up a cement floor that we pulled carpet from. It was very easy to apply and the color coverage is great! Would definitely recommend.

What a great product. Covered my basement floor vinyl flooring tiles that could not be removed. Did 2 base coats and one top coat. Minimal smell and looks great.

                      Bathroom tile floor
I am extremely pleased with the results of this Rustoleum floor paint! I had dirty stained grout and after the application, it looks like a brand new tile floor! I love it!

                        Very difficult to get right
I followed the instructions exactly, ended up with a less than desirable result. The base coat went on nicely, the top coat seems like it dried too quickly, leaving white milky streaks all over the place. Currently trying to figure out how to make this mess look better. Save yourself the money and the headache and just rip the old tile out and install LVT, which is what I should have did.

Oh no, Matthew! This is not what we want to hear about Rust-Oleum Home Floor Coating. To avoid streaking, keep a wet edge when applying the Step 2 topcoat. The remedy is to sand the entire floor, removing any sanding residue and ensuring that the surface is clean and dry before recoating it, keeping a wet edge as you apply the topcoat.

                          It does not peel
I had a 50 yr old pink tile with mauve grout in my kitchen. It was gross. I used this base coat paint and the semi gloss top coat. It was easy and turned out perfect. After 2 days, In front of the sink area I wanted to test the results. I took a butter knife and scraped the floor. No chipping. So I took a steak knife and did the same. NO scratch or chip. We shall see how time plays out. We have kids and a100 lb dog

End result was not great. But it was in a small bathroom and once the rug, sink and toilet are installed it should be barely noticeable. The original tile floor surface was smooth but still after one coat of base paint there were quite a voids. My wife tried to touch them up with a brush but putting an entire second coat would have evened out the color better. The topcoat sealer needs to be applied lightly. Our final result has white-ish stains where the sealer was rolled too thick. A few tips. Be sure to tape beyond the height of the roller. Base coat can be removed from stained wood trim with a Teflon pan cleaning pad. Wear a hat or hair net. A couple of my wife's long hairs were rolled into the sealer. If the sealer puddles up and looks milky, then there is too much of it. Woking in small spaces with a roller on a stick is difficult. Brush stroked trim areas with the base coat are difficult to blend in. Since most DIYers will only do this once, there is no learning curve to try out this product to understand it's handing properties. Unlike wall paint, I don't think correcting mistakes is as easy as applying another coat. Final opinion is that if you want perfect then replace the floor tile. If you want a change that is fast and inexpensive then this will work.
