If you ready want a wood floor that shines, this is the best polyurethane to use. I’ve used it and I’m absolutely pleased.

To cut down on fumes in the house, Can I apply this to pieces of wood prior to laying the wood? Not sure if I'd have to add a last layer to seal the planks together or not either, but if I can do the first 3 coats on the porch and avoid the toxins for the first few coats I'd like to. Thanks for helping.

Not a good idea. if clear gets on edges of wood, it's going to make a hard fit assuming you want the boards to fit tight to one another. I just finished a whole house. I had bought respirators and didn't have to use them. Raised the windows and had hardly any smell. Though I did use the low VOC version of this product.

I am planning on refinishing a hardwood floor this winter in a house with gas heat. Since I will need to run the heat to maintain an adequate temperature, do I have to be concerned about the fumes exploding since I will have minimum ventilation?

The following is a rendition of my experiences with, and methods using Rust-Oleum Parks 5 gal. Clear Gloss Oil-Based Interior Polyurethane for Floors. I am not a professional contractor nor do i claim to have any expertise with this product. You are welcome to read what I am reporting here and draw from it as you feel if will help you. No guarantees are intended or made and your results in using this product should be reliant on your judgments, experience, and decisions, not mine. i own a children's dance school in Apopka FL (near Orlando). We refinish 5 studios regularly (4 once a year and 1 every 6 months). We used to use another product until a genius in the Obama administration outlawed one of the key ingredients. The product was discontinued, and we had to search out this one. It's not as good but as close as I could get and we are happy with it. Our main complaint is that, for dancers, it tends to get slippery over time. Our studio's maintenance schedule has us sanding and refinishing the dance floors in 4 of the studios, once a year on a rotating basis. The 5th studio gets sanded and refinished twice a year. We've been using this product for more than 3 years now. We've used it in the Florida summer heat and the holiday season when temperatures run from the high 20's and low 30's. We never had any indication of problems from ambient temperatures in the rooms. The rooms are digitally set at a low of 55 degrees over night, and 76 degrees during classes, again, never a problem of any kind. With regards to the fumes, when sanding and refinishing, we open every door and try to schedule the urethane application when the facility is closed, i.e. weekends, holidays, etc. The fumes from this product are much less intense than the previous brand and they are completely gone as soon as the product is dry, which is well within 24 hours of it being applied. Fumes from the old brand used to linger for 3 to 5 days after the product was dry. The first time we tried it, we positioned five 36" fans to draw fumes out of the rooms and concluded they were not needed. We now use the passive ventilation created by leaving the door open. there are no windows. Usually, when we sand and refinish a studio, the first coat of refinish takes about 2.5 gallons applied slightly heavier than normal, the second coat takes a little less than 1.5 gallons and the last coat takes about 1 gallon. NO SANDING BETWEEN COATS and if you get the 2nd and 3rd coats applied within the "re-coat widow," you should be done in 24 hours. With regards to heat, we sand and refinish right at 4,000 sq ft without any special treatment or settings on our 7 HVAC units and have never had any incidents: I do not believe the heating fuel should be a factor as much as where the heat is actually generated. If it is in the same room that is being coated with the urethane, much more care should be exercised but if the flame and heat source is remotely located, my advise would be to heat the building to a predetermined high level, then as you approach the warmest part of the day, shut off the heat source and apply the urethane as quickly as possible and keep the heat source off and passive ventilation active for as long as possible. If you are not sure of the circumstances, you might want to let the local fire company know what you are doing just so they can offer safety suggestions. Those guys are great.

Perhaps it was just the can I got, but it is very thick, and it makes laying down an even coat somewhat difficult, particularly when brushing in edges and corners. You really need to avoid going back over areas that you have already applied, even after only a minute. If an area is not perfect, just let it dry and wait for the next coat. It is very high build and I think it could stand slight thinning to make application easier without sacrificing too much build. The finish it yields has a plasticky look rather than a more natural one. Overall, I think it is a good value product.

However, we had some difficulties with this. First: after ordering online for in-store pickup, I did not discover until I got to the site that the can had a tiny puncture leak and had cured completely solid like one big block of epoxy. So we had to go back to the store to get a replacement. Second: the semi-gloss finish was extremely patchy, even after two coats, with some glossy patches and dull patches. We wound up sanding it and applying a full gloss top-coat to it (this same product, but in clear gloss finish). The gloss top coat looks perfectly uniform and we are very pleased with it (5 stars for that). If you are trying to decide between semi-gloss and gloss, go with the gloss. And apply it thickly with a ROLLER, not the pads Home Depot is pushing with this stuff. Before applying this product, make SURE you fully strip, sand, and remove all dust from the floor. Even if you think it looks clean, it's not.

It does yellow the wood some, which isn’t a huge deal for my use, but worth noting. I can’t speak for durability yet, as I just applied it and it’s on the wall.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I cannot grade this product until the 2014 Holiday Season. Until then, I will not know how well it hols up. Ratings are THUS FAR The price could always be better although thus far, I am happy with the ordering process, the packaging, the free shipping and the ease with which the product was applied. We are a childrens dance studio and when the product we used to use is no longer manufactured, I cannot judge this product overall as yet because it has only been down for 1 month. I am optomistic however, if it does not withstand the dancing feet of out students for one year, I will be disapointed. We divide our 5 studios and perform floor maintenance every 6 months on selected studios. Around the 2014 Holiday Season, I will have a good idea of the durability and if it is good, and everything else, including price and free shipping, remains the same, I will purchase another 3 - 5 gallon buckets, and so on every six months. I am attaching a photo of our Tap Studio which is the most abused floor we have. Thid product id in its 3rd week of classes in this studio and so far, it is holding up well. Recommending it will depend on how well it holds up after 6 months of TAP classes.
