Q:Will this product hold up to forklift traffic?
by|Jun 22, 2024
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out. While Rust-Oleum Professional High Performance Protective Enamel provides excellent durability, it is not considered to be a floor finish. The exposure to foot or vehicle traffic will cause the finish to blister and peel. Instead, we would recommend applying our Rust-Oleum Professional Inverted Striping Paint. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Professional-18-oz-Flat-Red-Inverted-Striping-Spray-Paint-211777/100136171 -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

      Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out, Doug. Rust-Oleum Professional High Performance Protective Enamel provides a durable finish without the need for a hardener. We do not recommend adding any hardener or catalyst as this will alter the formulation and can hinder the curing process. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

I wanted to paint my 1990 F-250 4 X 4 but didn't want to spend a fortune at an auto-body shop or for the materials to paint it with expensive automotive paints myself. I have used Rust-Oleum products on smaller things in the past so I thought what the heck I'll give it a try on my truck. After all, it's only used as a wood hauler or for a load to the dump, it's not used as my only transportation. I purchased two gallons of Professional Series Safety Orange and Semi-Gloss Black from Home Depot, along with the Rust-Oleum White and Grey Primer. I also purchased a couple gallons of acetone recommended for thinning and cleaning. I removed all the trim I could to save a lot of masking. I then got busy and sanded the complete truck with 220 dry sand paper and a DA sander. I made some repairs to the body then sprayed several coats of the white primer on the areas where the truck was going to be orange and used the grey primer on the areas that were being painted black. The roof of the cab had a lot of surface rust so I sanded it really good, then applied three coats of the Rust-Oleum Red Oxide Primer for the extra rust protection. When the primer was dry, I applied a light guide coat using over thinned black to the entire primed areas of the truck. I waited a couple of days then sanded the complete truck with 320 grit wet sandpaper, a couple different sizes of sanding blocks, and a bucket of water. I sanded the light black guide coat off until it was back down to white or grey primer being careful not to sand past the primer. I masked the upper section of the truck hood, cab and bed. The paint was thinned per the instructions on the label and I began spraying on the color. A light not too wet coat at first, let the tack up then followed with two medium wet coats, allowing some time in-between coats. Starting with the Orange, I painted the truck just below the upper body line. I let the Orange dry for several days, then masked it off and painted the Red base color for the stripe. I let the Red dry for a couple days then masked the lower surfaces and sprayed upper surfaces with the Semi-Gloss Black. I waited several days in-between colors so as to allow the paint to set up and dry so I didn't leave tape marks. I waited another couple days then used Rust-Oleum Professional Series rattle cans to paint the silver stripe. I gave the truck a week to completely dry out before I started assembling it. I have to say I was very pleased with the results and finish I was able to achieve with the Rust Oleum Professional Series paints without spending an arm and leg to do it. I get a lot of compliments on the truck and when I tell them it's done with Rust-Oleum Paint their response is usually "that must have taken a lot of rattle cans" LOL I laugh and tell them it is available in gallons too. Overall I am very happy with the Rust-Oleum products. Thank you Rust-Oleum and Home Depot for a great product

I sprayed the product and had to reduce it down with acetone. It covered the primered metal with two coats. I let it dry a full 24 hours before touching it. The paint surface was very soft and rubbed off to the primer. It was not a durable paint surface.

            Response from Rust-OleumSupportNov 3, 2017
Let's get to the bottom of this, Harley! in ideal conditions, Rust-Oleum Professional Protective Enamel Paint dries to the touch after 2-4 hours. Please keep in mind that our products dry from the outside in, so while they may feel dry to the touch, the coating does not fully cure until after 7-10 days. Once cured, the product has reached full durability and adhesion. Rustoleum
