So, can I use this with a top coat of solid stain or acrylic latex paint? any specific instructions for either?
Asked by: RZ
I really cleaned my old deck well: scrubbed and power washed twice and let dry for a couple of days. used the deck start then applied my solid stain acrylic it seems to be working great, but it is only one month since being redone. I did some painting on the deck 2 years ago with no primer just cleaning and it started peeling almost the next day.

Asked by: jlap
Yes it can and yes you should use this over Behr's Deck Over. I noticed this Rustoleum has started recommending the use of this primer product prior to using their rock solid texturized products. In order to achieve good adhesion you must first clean your deck. Don't use any solid stain/paint/ or textured solid top coat if your wood is not at least 3 years old (especially pressure treated). When you clean it use a power washer and hold it no closer than 12 inches to the wood's surface. Then use bleach mixed with 50% water in a plastic watering can and pour it everywhere once the sun has started setting and let it sit over night. The next day stray lightly with water, use a course brush and sprinkle a light dusting (light) and scrub and rinse. Let dry 48 hours. 20 if in direct sunlight. Apply the Rustoleum Deck Start between each board with a thin paint brush then use a roller and apply a generous amount - soak the wood completed, and try to do it on an overcast day so it has more time to be absorbed deeper into the wood. Wait at least 3 to 4 hours before applying your Deck Over or texturized Rustoleum product. (I know it says an hour but nail holes are still wet). Apply textured top coat first in between each board first, then you can roll it over. Again, during over cast, early morning, or very late afternoon...don't do this between 11 am and 5:00 pm-it will dry to quickly and have poor adhesion. Then wait 24 hours and repeat-in between the boards first then roller application. Don't rush process or it will strip. AND NEVER APPLY DECK OVER or RUSTOLEUM TEXTURED PRODUCT DIRECTLY TO THE WOOD REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE PRODUCT LABELS SAY-it will strip when the wood gets wet underneath through tiny porous cracks and pores that are inherent with textured paint products*******YOU MUST USE A SEALER/PRIMER first. Even if the adhesion seems good water will be pulled through and rot the wood. Speaking of that...when you have finished applying two coats (YES...two coats that are thick coats not "trying to squeeze my money but doing it thin," and so when you put this textured product on do it very thick. By the way, all holes and cracks and screw/nail holesmust be filled in so you can't see them anymore!!!!!! Once two coats have been applied give it 72-100 hours cure time then.....THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP....use the primer sealer and go back over the entire textured surface with it including cracks, and reapply the primer sealer by Rustoleum once a year to maintain the textured surface underneath. I have three decks that are multi-level that connect together - one 12 x 10, 12 x 12, and 12 x 20. I bought 8 cans of Deck Over, which was just enough. And I bought 6 cans of Rustoleum Deck Start wood primer. To do the job right expect to pay $1000.00. Or it will up just peel up and if you don't seal it the textured surface will absorb water and rot out your deck boards. BY the way- before you use textured paint you have to dig down in the can with a paint stick to mix the sand on the sides and bottom-BESURE TO DO THIS BEFORE EVEN USING ANY PAINT OUT OF THE CAN-the shakers at home depot will not do this - it must be done manually by you. If you follow these steps this product and textured products work awesome for wood applications. AND DON'T DO ANY WORK IF RAIN IS EXPECTED IN THE NEXT 20 hours! If you have only put one coat of textured paint on cover it with a tarp if rain is coming or the paint can swell and bubble. Have fun, Mike in Canada, North Bay, Ontario

Depends on temperature and humidity but, if dried completely, should be no problem at all. My lawn sprinkler got my newly primed deck the same afternoon of application....no problem.
