Answer This Question

Cindy, thanks for reaching out! Rust-Oleum Specialty Lacquer Spray Paint is suitable for use on wood, metal, plaster, masonry, and unglazed ceramic. However, it is not recommended on a plastic surface; if applied, it will not bond properly. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 10

I am painting the metal frame of an Ikea shelving unit from black to white. What would you recommend as a primer and what would you recommend as a top coat?
    ByJul 9, 2026

    Answer This Question

Thank you for reaching out, Kait. While Rust-Oleum Specialty Lacquer Spray Paint provides a durable finish for wood and metal surfaces, it also contains very strong solvents that have the potential of damaging the previous coating. We recommend painting your shelf with Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch 2X Ultra Cover Spray Paint, this provides excellent adhesion to various surfaces and great coverage, making it a great choice when making a drastic color change. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Painter-s-Touch-2X-12-oz-Flat-Black-General-Purpose-Spray-Paint-334020/307244849 -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Can this be applied to painted surfaces
      ByJul 5, 2026
      1 Answer |
      Answer This Question

Yes, it can, Johnny! While Rust-Oleum Specialty Lacquer Spray Paint can be applied over previously painted surfaces that are in sound condition, it is always recommended to do a test spray in a small, inconspicuous area to ensure compatibility and favorable results. — Rust-Oleum Product Support 15

        is VOC high or low?
        ByFeb 22, 2026
        1 Answer |
        Answer This Question

Happy to help, Bob! We measure our aerosols with an MIR value and don't measure the VOC level. That information can be found on the Safety Data Sheet in section 16. For the gloss black Rust-Oleum Specialty Lacquer Spray, the Maximum Incremental Reactivity value is 0.94. https://images.thdstatic.com/catalog/pdfImages/e7/e7f91aae-971e-48c8-b602-88fbf203cf9e.pdf — Rust-Oleum Product Support 15

Can this gloss lacquer spray be used on metal? What is the best way to apply to keep the product from running when sprayed on an upright item, such as a floor vase? Thank you

          Answer This Question

We appreciate you reaching out! Rust-Oleum Specialty Lacquer Spray Paint is able to be applied to a metal surface. For best application results, hold can upright 10-16" from surface and spray in a steady back and forth motion, slightly overlapping each stroke. Keep the can the same distance from the surface. Keep the can in motion while spraying. Apply two or more light coats a few minutes apart to avoid drips and runs. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 10

                  Answer This Question

Thanks for reaching out, Syed! Rust-Oleum Specialty Lacquer Spray Paint will adhere to metal, but proper adhesion usually requires a scuff sand. We would recommend a test application in a small, inconspicuous area to ensure favorable results with your mirror finish. 2-3 light coats a few minutes apart to avoid drips and runs. — Rust-Oleum Product Support 15

This product worked perfectly. It seems to adhere well to various types of woods, including bare wood and wood that has been painted with acrylic paint. I have used this successfully on various wooden toys and birdhouses that i have created.

                    Terrible
I tried to use the product to refinish a small cabinet. The spray button is incredibly hard to press and the product came out unevenly, even after shaking the can for over 2 minutes. The finish was bumpy and not smooth at all and after three coats I gave up and bought something else.

Sprays fine with no mess. Much easier to use than Poly. Shine may be "gloss" but it's not overwhelming. Fumes can become strong, so a mask or spray outside. Negative: Not enough product. A whole can will only last one project.

Hard finish. Dries quickly. Does not require sanding between coats as does urethane varnish.

I use this gloss lacquer all the time for finishing my woodturnings. It has always worked well. Many light coats help avoid runs and orange peel.
