This cannot be used where exposed fire will contact the paint. You can use it on the outside of the fireplace, however.

First coat went on great. No runs. It was all a uniform finish. I should've stopped there but wanted to make sure I had a nice coat on the fireplace and it wouldn't come off. Second coat was bad. Parts were a flat finish. Some were a glossy finish. Some parts ran. I tried to sand between coats with a fine finish as per the directions. That was an even worse decision. Extra coats did not fill in the small sand marks and now I have swirl marks. Every coat that I put on makes it worse and worse. Not really sure how to proceed other than strip the whole entire thing and start over.

Started painting before latex was introduced on the market. My painting knowledge is rather extensive so any issues I 99.9% can deal with. But I found this Grill paint is not up to Rust-Oleum's claimed standards. I used Rust-Oleum grill paint in the 1970's and 1990's, I had no issues. Paint hardened nicely. This time I'm using the 1200*F spray can paint. __2nd week of Aug 2018 weather is perfect for painting my Motorcycle exhaust parts made of 100% steel. Wire wheeled all the OEM paint off and 100% removed rust spots. Die grinder wire wheel all crevasses where the large wire wheel missed. Scotch pad wiped all surfaces which removes all dust, there was no residue, only clean metal. The surface is ready to paint. __Working in my closed garage, 80*F, approx 65% humidity and roof exhaust fan running. I installed 2 layers of home furnace filters in garage wall for cross ventilation. FINE inexpensive system, if I say so. __1st coat as per can directions for spray distance and drying time 30 to 45 minutes before 2nd coat, due to humidity. Cross sprayed the 2nd coat and let dry 18 hours. Shook cans about every 15 to 30 seconds of use. __Heated all parts in my large BBQ grill with 2 thermostats at different levels, heat was even. Cooked the parts for 35-45 minutes at 275*F, large parts took longer. After parts cooled to air temperature I moved them to the garage. Here is the problem, the paint did not harden at all. I was able to scrape the paint off with a fingernail. It was the same softness as before heating. Since all parts are different shapes, there was some differences in coat coverage. I can understand IF some parts had issues but the small flat heat shields should have been perfect. No parts had hardened paint. I thumb nail pressed in several places, an indent was left = SOFT = SAD. __I gave it 2 STARS because... the finish looked good. . EXTREMELY UNHAPPY in my wasted prep time since I will have to redo everything. I'M SURPRISED AT Rust-Oleum 1200*F POOR QUALITY PAINT. I WILL NEVER USE THIS PAINT AGAIN. I CAN NOT RECOMMEND IT.

I was looking to refinish/restore a rusting fire pit to like new condition and this paint turned out to be exactly what I needed. After removing the rust, a single coat coat, spread on liberally, is all that was required to get my fire pit ready for another reason. I find one can is sufficient to cover a single fire pit - which is perfect. I even refinished the inside of the fire pit. Even though it warns not to paint the area in direct exposure to flame, I find it holding up quite well to the heat. The 'only' reason, and I mean the 'only' reason this product doesn't get all five stars is because of limited color-choice. Other colors are available, but it bulk.
