Questions & Answers

would it yield better lasting results (still short term, of course) if we did a coating of poly after applying this product?

Asked by: ALC
I did my counters in 2010, had old white counters with gold marbeling - ugly stuff! and a huge hole in the middle of one counter. I filled the hole with an epoxy paste designed for cars (was thinking heat resistance and rock hard surface) in 2018 I finally had to re-do the counters... yes that's 8 years later... the only reason i had to re-do them was cause i spilled brush cleaner on it and missed a spot about the size of a small spoon head when cleaning it up so ended up with a white spot. I wouldn't put anything on top because i don't know of anything that is quite as durable, or heat tolerant as the product itself. I put hot pans out of the oven and off the stove on it all the time with no issues. It cleans up super well, usually just need to put a little bleach on it for a few seconds to get kool-aid stains out and its good as new. Word of advise for care though - do not use the green scratch pad... the blue one is fine... and even steel wool... but the green scratch pad will scratch and dull the surface. I recommend this and the higher end counter restorations by Rust-Oleum all the time!

Re: Rust-Oleum's Countertop Coating.I'm a little confused about where you find the color selection to mix in with the coating. Is it sold separately?

Asked by: calezu
Ok.. So for white only comes by itself- 1 can .. .. What about top coat -- for protection? Thank you for answering my question

What kind of primer is recommended for this product?

Asked by: bknowes
I am considering this product. I have countertops that have already been "painted" with something that is supposed to look like granite. There are a few cuts and scrapes in this surface and it was a terrible job. Will this product bond to another products like this? I am pretty sure it was a Giani kit if that helps.

Will this product cover burns and scratches in a laminate counter?

Asked by: Kate
It did mine. If the scratches are light, just lightly sand with FINE GRIT sandpaper ( no pressure on sandpaper) If it's actually a gouge, try the Roberts Laminate Repair kit also sold at HD. Fill in sand, Fill again, sand again, as many times as you need to, use a sanding block.

Customer Reviews

29 oz. Countertop Coating Tint Base is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 193.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice, easy quick fix Bought 1 can and had it tinted to the Putty color. I also bought the epoxy chips in the tan mix. I put the chips in a spice grinder and pulsed to get a finer chip dimension. I followed the directions completely. I cleaned the counter tops, sanded them down (I used a sanding block), wiped down the counter tops. Got a good dense foam roller, and poured the paint right on to the counter top. I then rolled away, covering all the surfaces completely. I then went and sprinkled the chips on top. Broadcasting them all over the top with my hand. I'm going to wait at least 24hrs. to check the surface, and I'll sand down any areas of chips that seem rough. I will then top it with 2-3 coats of poly in a glossy finish. From what it looks like so far, it's great. Much better than the classic Golden Harvest yellow with gold flakes it was before. I also plan on using the cabinet kit. I will be tackling that in about 3 days, that way the counter top has plenty of time to dry.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WAIT before you recoat I've used this and it's a good product. There are a couple things worth mentioning. Clean the surface and very lightly sand it with a fine sandpaper. It must be absolutely clean. When applying give the surface a good even coat and LEAVE IT ALONE to dry. Once it has set-up and dried to touch if you see any spots you feel the need to "touch-up" DO NOT TOUCH THEM UP. If you do the area you're touching up will curl and be ruined. Most oil based paints have a re-coat window. For example spray paints state re-coat within 4 hours or 1 week. This product doesn't address re-coat time. It should. In my case I learned the hard way. I recoated too soon, spoiled the finish. To fix it I used a latex paint over the entire surface, let it dry and then re-applied this product. Worked fine. Experimenting on an old counter I found 3-4 weeks would be an acceptable time to re-coat. The product reaches it's prime in a couple months.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from FANTASTIC PRODUCT--FOLLOW DIRECTIONS!! This product is fantastic, but you must follow the directions. First, start with a small area so you can get used to using the product. Buy 4 inch FOAM HIGH DENSITY rollers. Clean the area very, very well, run your hand over the surface to make sure there is nothing attached to the surface and it is smooth (I sanded the surface of one area, but it worked better for me to just clean the surface really, really well). Make sure to tape around the area where you are working and keep a wet paper towel close by to wipe off any paint you might get on areas where you don't want it. Apply one coat. Look to see if there are any stray fibers in the surface--remove those with your finger and paint over that area. Then, wait 45 minutes and apply a second coat. Then wait 24 hours, and it will look beautiful!!! You do not need poly urethane or anything else on top. I spent about $60 including rollers, tape, etc. and I have new, beautiful counter tops!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product.... Super easy for a new DIY'er and very resilient! I was getting ready to have new flooring, a new backsplash and some other items installed in my kitchen. I thought I would just use this product as a quick fix to last me maybe a year or so and then invest in a new countertop (For $20, I figured, at the time, that they would only stay good for about that long). Boy, was I wrong. I didn't use any TSP or anything on the counters just gave them a really good washing and drying. And rolled it on with a small paint roller as suggested. I had a small area (you can see in the picture) where a piece of the counter had been chipped out. I patched that and painted over it and you can't even tell where that spot ever was. Nearly 4 years now and they still look great. Sometimes, if I've leave a wet dish on the counter, the area leaves a mark but, if I wipe it down and let it dry again, it is gone. I would absolutely use again.

Only issue I have had (and I have used this product for years) is the color is messed up every time and home depot paint people agree. It took me each time I got some or wanted to try a new color, a few cans to make sure it was right. I use this stuff for so many things so that doesn't bother me to have new colors on hand lol. Anyways it takes about 3 coats to get a decent cover but it dries super quick so I do a coat and come back an hour later to do another. I will tell you this though....... wait a few days to put anything down in it. Even though it seems dry to the touch anything set down in it will make impressions. I always wait at least 2 days sometimes 3 if I do a lot of coats. It's is well worth it though!!!! Tips: color codes messed up at store Super strong smell Takes a few days to cure covers and holds up amazing Goes on easy with foam roller Super sticky but that's what makes it cover so well Well worth the money saved!!!

It was all very helpful. The end result was a very attractive and functional counter top. I roughened the surface with a course sandpaper to give the paint some tooth. I cleaned the top with warm water and a touch of soap. The cleaned it again with a damp cloth. I used a small foam roller and a small pro brush for the tight areas. Care was taken to put on a thin coat rolled out evenly. Only one coat was used. I waited 3 days before using the top. After this, I used a 2000 grit sandpaper (from an automotive supply) to lightly take off those small bits. This did not affect the paint job. The end result was a very good looking counter top that one would think was original. One bit of advice: When the top had dried I could see some of the roller marks. It seems to me that now, unless you are looking for them, they are virtually gone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cannot wait to use this product again on my new house I had very ugly hunter green countertops that drove me crazy ... one night I decided I had to do something to fix it so I purchased tan countertop paint. I brought it home and put it on ... I did an ok job making it smooth but didn't like the boring look of one flat color... so I went back and purchased it in chocolate brown and off white and a sea sponge. I sponged on the dark brown and white which made it pop but a little too much for my taste so I sponged the original tan over the top. It came out AMAZING!!!! My father in law who is a finish carpenter came over and asked if I re-laminated my countertops!!!! When I told him they were painted he just had to touch them and was amazed! The counters in my new house (a 1970 mobile home lol) are black in the kitchen and white in the bathroom ... cannot wait to play with this again!! Wish I still had pictures

Rated 1 out of 5 by from After 2 years terrible..DON'T BUY!!!! I applied this product according to the directions. It smells terrible and is very very strong! After application the product looked good. However time changed that. I never used harsh chemicals or anything like that to clean it. Within a year it started chipping, it hold stains that will not come off and discolored in certain spots. Sure it looked good at first but what doesn't after first applied. Over the long term it will not hold up. Please do not purchase this. It's terrible to live with a countertop and have to be ever so gentle with it in hope no more damage will occur. It was in our bathroom countertop. I can't even imagine if it was a kitchen countertop. I couldn't take it any more after 2 years. Luckily I was able to use ctristrip to remove the rest of it and take the countertop back to original. If you only want your countertop to look good for a few months then go with this but you must be very, very gentle. No matter what you do though it will still look terrible, eventually.
