Q:Should i tint the primer before applying the paint?
      by|Jun 26, 2021
      1 Answer
      Answer This Question

A:  Great question, Jay! A primer is not required with Rust-Oleum Specialty Chalkboard Paint. However, we do recommend one for bare wood and metal, paperboard and hardboard. Apply Chalkboard paint 2 hours after applying primer. After priming bare wood, we recommend to sand lightly to smooth out the surface. To prime, Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Water-Based Primer can be used! https://www.homedepot.com/p/Zinsser-Bulls-Eye-1-2-3-1-Gal-White-Water-Based-Interior-Exterior-Primer-and-Sealer-2001/100398391 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

          Why is mine white??
It doesn't look like there's any pigment in my can of paint! And no instructions to indicate that I should add pigment or that this should be painted over another pigmented paint. Am I getting this completely wrong? As it is, I don't think I can use this!

            Pretty bad chalkboard paint
I guess technically I was left with a chalkboard surface I applied this paint, but it looks terrible. First, the paint is extremely thick, and doesn't cover well at all, so your options are either do 2-3 coats and wait the 4 hours in between coats, or apply it thickly, which results in tons of runs. Either way sucks. Then, after the paint is applied, you have to be extremely gently with it or it will pull up from the surface. I sanded my surface with a palm sander and 220 grit paper and the paint peels up like a sticker. So now I'm left with an uneven looking chalkboard coating on my surface that's peeled up in some areas. Overall I would not buy again, this stuff sucks look elsewhere. I'd return it if I could, even though it was only $10 I feel insulted I wasted my time with it

Let's talk about this! When applying Rust-Oleum Specialty Chalkboard Paint, a minimum of 2 coats are required. In ideal conditions, you can recoat after 4 hours, however cooler temperatures can extend this recoat time. We do not recommend applying one thick coat, as it will prevent a good finish and proper drying.

              TERRIBLE! DO NOT BUY
Worst paint i ever bought. It is the hardest thing to apply even on a primed surface. It comes out very uneven. I painted 6 coats and it was still uneven. The instructions say you will only need 2 coats. I followed every instruction very precisely and talked to many workers and yet my banner blue chalkboard turned into a ocean textured blue nightmare

Oh no, that doesn't sound right! It is important to mix the Rust-Oleum Specialty Chalkboard Paint thoroughly to ensure any settled pigment is re-dispersed. Using a good quality synthetic brush, ¼” to ⅜” nap roller or a foam roller designed to give a smooth finish is important to avoid the problems you are experiencing. Also, avoid excessive brushing or rolling. Use light, even strokes to ensure an even and the smoothest finish. For best results, follow these tips while applying to a clean, primed surface. We need to know more about your experience to get to the bottom of this. Please call us at 800-481-4785 to discuss further. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5 Rustoleum

What a great product! Fun, versatile, and very easy to use! I was able to convert the back of the kitchen cabinet into a chalkboard. Great for me to leave messages to the kids... Or for the kids to draw and do homework! Great color options too.

Let's see what we can figure out! Rust-Oleum Specialty Chalkboard Paint is an ultra-hard, scratch
resistant finish that allows you to create a unique writable erasable surface. While the coating is fully dry in 4 hours, it is critical to wait 3 days before using the chalkboard surface. Using prior to 3 days will result in the surface scratching. Before writing, condition the surface by rubbing the side of a piece of chalk over the entire surface and erase. This will leave a coat of chalk dust that will provide the best erasability. Chalkboard can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. Wait 7 days after painting before wiping it down. Repeat conditioning step after cleaning.
