Q:Why would you paint 2x flat black over mirror paint?

    Answer This Question

A:  Happy to clear things up! Rust-Oleum Specialty Mirror Effect Spray Paint is intended for use on the reverse side of the glass only. Applying black over the final coat will add more depth to the visible side. With the Mirror Effect Paint, the side that is painted will have a dull gray appearance. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

I didn't know this was an option. I ask the Home Depot rep and she suggested it. I love how my project turned out.

Bought this to re-finish a glass gazing ball for my garden; tested on a small glass marble project and was really impressed! Great coverage, odor not so bad, and the mirror finish is outstanding.

          Not a mirror effect
I read mixed reviews on this and thought for $9 I'd give it a try fixing my antique mirror that had a bunch of spots that needed filled. I followed the instructions, at 5 coats it had no reflection after 10 it still looked like garbage. Streaky hazy nothing like what a mirror looks like.

That's odd! To ensure the proper finish, Rust-Oleum Specialty Mirror Effect Spray Paint must be applied to the reverse side of the glass. If applying to a mirror, it needs to be applied to the back of it, as the paint will otherwise have a hazy gray finish.

I bought a new cabinet with clear glass, and used Mirror Effect in an attempt to match the mirrored cabinet next to it. The spray mirror reflects only about 75% of the light that a true mirror reflects.

Thank you for sharing your experience using our Rust-Oleum Specialty Mirror Effect Spray, David. When applied, this coating creates a decorative mirror effect on the reverse side of the glass surface, however, the finish will not match the reflective ability of an actual mirror. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

It went on smooth as long as you shake it well. Ornaments came out beautiful.

Results came nowhere near the claims of the product. For us it was a total waste of time and money.

We appreciate you reaching out and sharing your experinece, JP. For the best results, Rust-Oleum Specialty Mirror Effect Spray Paint needs to be applied to the reverse side of the glass. Applying a black paint over the mirror effect on the back can also help ensure the best appearance.
