Questions & Answers

Is Rust-Oleum glossy black spray paint acceptable in place of Rust-Oleum 2x flat black as a second coat after the mirror finish?
ByAug 15, 2025
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

Jeff, great question! When applying Rust-Oleum Specialty Mirror Effect Spray Paint, a gloss black is fine to use; however, it will have a different appearance. It is recommended to test a small section or on a test piece to ensure a favorable outcome. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 10

Will this work to fill in a tiny chip on the corner of an LED mirror so it's not so obvious that it is chipped ?

    Answer This Question

We're happy to clear things up. While Rust-Oleum Specialty Mirror Effect Spray Paint provides a mirror finish, it must be applied to the reverse side of glass to give the mirror effect. It cannot be applied to a mirror to fix or cover any chips or imperfections. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Can this be sprayed between a double wall glass vase to repair an antique mercury glass vase?

      Answer This Question

Happy to help, Willie. While Rust-Oleum Specialty Mirror Effect Spray Paint can be applied to give a look similar to a mercury glass vase, we do not recommend it to fix or repair any surface. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

I have a floor length mirror that got scratched and is now showing the glass through. Can I use this to touch up that spot to blend it again?
        ByApr 6, 2024
        1 Answer |
        Answer This Question

Thank you for reaching out. While Rust-Oleum Specialty Mirror Effect Spray Paint provides a mirror like finish when applied to the reverse side of glass, we do not recommend it to repair scratching in your mirror as it cannot be applied to the reverse side. The differences and imperfections will also be noticeable when applied directly to a mirror. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

          Answer This Question

Thank you for reaching out, Matt. While Rust-Oleum Specialty Mirror Finish can be applied to glass surfaces we do not recommend applying to car windows as it will block you from being able to see out the window. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

            Answer This Question

Why would you paint 2x flat black over mirror paint?

              1 Answer |
              Answer This Question

Happy to clear things up! Rust-Oleum Specialty Mirror Effect Spray Paint is intended for use on the reverse side of the glass only. Applying black over the final coat will add more depth to the visible side. With the Mirror Effect Paint, the side that is painted will have a dull gray appearance. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

We used this to create some mirrors for our home bar. We wanted them to look like old, antique mirrors. They turned out well, but this stuff can be kind of finicky. It takes multiple coats, 3-5, to get a consistent mirror effect across the whole piece. We distressed the paint after, and parts got a little more cloudy for some reason than expected, but the overall affect works.

Looks like fog, not a mirror like finish at all. A waste of money.

We may be able to help! To ensure the mirror effect, Rust-Oleum Specialty Mirror Effect Spray Paint must be applied to the back or reverse side of the glass. This paint will not provide a metallic finish on the side it is applied to.

                  Waste of time and money
I bought this product after reading the "good" reviews. After painstakingly preparing a mirror that had black streaks and fading, I applied 6 coats of Mirror Effect and it still failed a flashlight test for opacity, but when I turned the mirror over it just looked like I sprayed it with silver paint. At $16 a can, this paint is no better than any silver spray paint. I ended up getting a new 30" x 40" mirror from a glass shop for $120. Looks new because it is new.

Bought this to re-finish a glass gazing ball for my garden; tested on a small glass marble project and was really impressed! Great coverage, odor not so bad, and the mirror finish is outstanding.

                    Not a mirror effect
I read mixed reviews on this and thought for $9 I'd give it a try fixing my antique mirror that had a bunch of spots that needed filled. I followed the instructions, at 5 coats it had no reflection after 10 it still looked like garbage. Streaky hazy nothing like what a mirror looks like.

That's odd! To ensure the proper finish, Rust-Oleum Specialty Mirror Effect Spray Paint must be applied to the reverse side of the glass. If applying to a mirror, it needs to be applied to the back of it, as the paint will otherwise have a hazy gray finish.

I bought a new cabinet with clear glass, and used Mirror Effect in an attempt to match the mirrored cabinet next to it. The spray mirror reflects only about 75% of the light that a true mirror reflects.

Thank you for sharing your experience using our Rust-Oleum Specialty Mirror Effect Spray, David. When applied, this coating creates a decorative mirror effect on the reverse side of the glass surface, however, the finish will not match the reflective ability of an actual mirror. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum
