Questions & Answers

What prep do I need to do if painting over oil based paint?
BySep 7, 2025
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

Before painting a surface with Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Door and Trim Paint that was previously painted with oil-based paint, prime with Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Water-Based Gray Primer. Sand the painted surface and ensure it is completely clean and dry. Then prime and wait 1 hour before applying 2 coats of the Door and Trim Paint, allowing 4 hours between coats. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Zinsser-Bulls-Eye-1-2-3-31-5-oz-Gray-Water-Based-Interior-Exterior-Primer-and-Sealer-286258/311917845 — Rust-Oleum Product Support 15

I have an exterior steel man door in my garage that has a gray paint now and is peeling. If I sand down the loose paint can I paint over with just this product? If not what other recommendations do you have? Thank you.

    Answer This Question

Happy to assist with the Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Door and Trim Paint! For repainting a painted door, remove any loose paint and rust with sandpaper. Lightly sand glossy surfaces. Clean the surface with soap and water, rinse and let dry. Paint a small test area in the corner. Hi, Can a color be added to the white for a custom color?
      ByMay 12, 2025
      1 Answer |
      Answer This Question

Great question. Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Door & Trim paint is a ready-to-use product and cannot have any additional tinting or colorant added to it. This will alter the formulation of the paint and hinder it from being able to cure to its full hardness. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

What paint in matt grey is good for aluminum doors
          ByApr 16, 2025
          1 Answer |
          Answer This Question

Happy to help, Debbie! Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Door and Trim Paint is perfect for painting aluminum doors. For aluminum, we do recommend sanding the aluminum with 220-grit sandpaper and making sure the surface is completely clean and dry before priming with Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Water-Based Primer. Bulls Eye 1-2-3 can be tinted slightly towards the Alpine Gray color with up to 2 ounces of universal colorant. Tinting toward the base coat will help with hide and extend the coverage of the Door and Trim Paint. Apply 2 coats of the Door and Trim Paint. We do not have a matte option in this paint line. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Zinsser-Bulls-Eye-1-2-3-1-Gal-White-Water-Based-Interior-Exterior-Primer-and-Sealer-2001/100398391 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 15

What primer would you advise to use, prior to putting this paint on?
            ByJan 7, 2025
            1 Answer |
            Answer This Question

Happy to help! Typically, a primer is not needed with Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Door and Trim Advanced Dry Paint. We do recommend a primer for bare wood and metal doors to help with coverage. Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Water-Based Primer is our recommended primer, and it is offered in gray for darker colors! https://www.homedepot.com/p/Zinsser-Bulls-Eye-1-2-3-31-5-oz-Gray-Water-Based-Interior-Exterior-Primer-and-Sealer-286258/311917845 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

              Is this paint water proof?
              ByNov 25, 2024
              1 Answer |
              Answer This Question

Thank you for reaching out. While Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Door & Trim Paint provides a weather-resistant finish, it is not considered to be water-proof. Any full-water immersion or exposure to high amounts of moisture will cause the paint to blister and peel. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

This paint has a nice texture. It's not too thick, but not watery either. I did have to use several coats, but that was mostly due to the paint roller I had available to me. The paint dried very quickly, so I was able to add additional costs fairly quickly. I would definitely buy this paint again

I purchased this to paint an older dresser for my grandson. I wanted a paint that I could brush/ roll on. I also needed a paint with a short cure time. This paint went on well. The coverage was great. It took two coats for full coverage. It was cold when I painted. I used our shed and did use heat, but I didn’t want to heat this space for days. I did all of the painting in one day. Let it sit until the next evening. I had cleaned up the drawer pulls and installed them. We delivered the new dresser the following evening. I will use this product again. I am looking forward to more colors or the ability to have it mixed at a store.

I am planning on painting my storm door as well I just haven’t had a chance because I have been waiting for it to warm up again! This paint covered my dark wood trim with ease! I would absolutely purchase this paint again!

Great thickness and pigment! 👍 thin texture
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was surprised it has a very light scent of acrylic paint, thin and flexible on a paper test. Looks great to refresh my white doors. I loved the way I can layer the paint with thin layers. Please shake well, it is good pigmentation 🙏 Thanks for sending me this product for a review ❤️ best of luck!

                      Great coverage!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I used the product on my mud room door and the trim around my front door. It only took two coats to cover problem areas! The paint rolled out nicely! I usually use more of an expensive paint brand. But, this paint is great. I would recommend this product! #auntniecyapproved

Perfect for adding extra shine to your home!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Wow, this paint is incredible. Starting off we only needed one coat, and it looks amazing. My bathroom window was looking very dull even after scrubbing the trim multiple times and ONE coat of this made such a difference in my bathroom like wow.

One coat is all you really need!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This went on so smooth! The color is bright and I only needed one coat over my existing trim color. There isn’t a strong paint smell. I love that I can use it on wood, metal, and fiberglass. It’s also indoor/outdoor so I will be able to update my storm doors in the spring. This is a great product and I would not only recommend it, but I would definitely purchase in the future.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This paint went up really well and looks bright and white! So far it has been holding up well and no chipping or cracking. I'm eager to see how it holds up

                              Reliable brand
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] So, no secret here, but I buy Rust-O-Leum paint whenever they have one for the job I need and they pretty consistently have every kind for home improvement and DIY anyway. We’re doing some reno fixing up the old house and it means calling up all I know about efficiency so naturally, the many door and window trim issues around the house are among them. So when I see the brand and Door and Trim in nice big letters, I’m there for it. What I like about this is that it’s not just holding up in the dry interior of the house but in the poorly ventilated bathroom and the bit of outside trim as well. The trick is thin even layers, letting each one dry and cure before placing another. For outdoor use, this means you have to hope the weather cooperates but indoors, it’s pretty simple to regulate temp and humidity for ideal results. It applied well with sponge and horsehair brushes as well as typical rollers. And one little quart goes a longer way than I thought. Between two cans, we were able to completely refresh the trim and doors. If only all reno was this easy… but at least I know Rust-O-Leum is coming in clutch with the paint.

                                Went on Smooth
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I used this door and trim paint for the back door trim of my house. Great paint, it looked great afterwards. Very quick drying. Went on very smoothly. Great coverage, high quality paint. I did end up using two coats. Loved the way it turned out .
