Questions & Answers

Can you put it on raw wood?

We are buying unfinished cabinets and want to use these kits and we are wondering how it works and how to get the glazed look?
Asked by: Joanna
Yes, it works great, use a primer first. We've found the Paprika with the glaze comes out really nice

All these reviews seem to be on newly finished projects--How well does it hold up to daily use? Is it durable?

I did my cabinets with Expresso finish 4 years ago and it still looks like it did when I finished them. I've never had to retouch them.

If you do the white color out of the box, will the top coat seal make it look yellowish?

Asked by: Cram
I painted my kitchen cabinets white (no glaze) several years ago and only recently began noticing a little yellowing in some corners and crevices where I apparently let the topcoat pool a little bit. It was barely noticeable and didn’t bother me abut (and I tend to fixate on little “uh-oh”s in my home projects. Just be careful when applying the topcoat and you’ll be fine. There are actually YouTube videos showing how to apply polyurethane to painted furniture - use the same technique.

Is there a Large Kit or are you just supposed to buy two?

I'm having a hard time figuring out just how much 100 square feet of coverage is and would the "small kit" be enough to do all my cupboards in the kitchen?
Asked by: jgr789
I had the same issue when calculating the square footage of the cabinets in our kitchen. Fortunately, the decision was made easy for us, as there was a good sale on the Espresso Small Cabinet Kit. However, there are additional options if desired: 100 sq Feet of Coverage - Cabinet Transformations® Dark Kit (258240), Light Kit (258109), Cabernet (263233), Espresso (263231) 200 sq Feet of Coverage - Cabinet Transformations® Dark Kit (258242).

I went in with the idea that this was a good product and regardless of how time consuming it was that my cabinets would look good. Big time wrong. Even with going along with the directions my cabinets are a loss. I got as far as painting them and all was good until I added the protective top coat that the manufacture specifically says will not yellow. Guess what? It yellowed. I would say that after all the hard work and time that by the last part of it I would be home free, you would think it would turn out good. Nope. Guess what I have all the time in the world and patience to start all over again, good one. I'm at a loss here. Bought two kits. Now I have 32 cabinet doors that look like a small dog (Rust-Oleum)came in and urinated on them. At this point all I can do is put them up and be reminded every single day what a complete waste of my time this product was. Thanks Rust-Oleum you changed the look and style of my cabinets. They look like the way your product really is.

I took off a couple of stars from the review because the instructions say that we should use a synethetic brush. I purchased a really high quality (i.e. expensive) synthetic brush it left very noticeable brush marks during the first coat of the paint, which is Step 2. I was prepared to do multiple thin coats anyway, and switched to a foam brush (super cheap) which seems to work much better than the brush. It covered up a lot of the brush strokes from the first coat, but they are still noticeable. An IMPORTANT tip, which is not related to any fault of the product itself, is to avoid a driveway or garage for painting like I did if there is any flying dust or if there are bugs. By the time the paint dried, I noticed particles of dust from the air which landed on the cabinet doors, and even a couple of mosquitoes :) They are very small, but still irritating if you are aiming for perfection. I had to sand that down before applying a new coat to get rid of it. And if you are willing to spend a few bucks on a battery power

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressive Results! I repainted my light wood color kitchen cabinets with this product and I was so impressed and pleased with the results. The prep work - cleaning and deglossing - did take a while but I think it made the end result better. And a word of advice - you need lots of surface area to work and lay out the cabinets. I did about two coats on each side plus I did the decorative glaze. My 10x10 kitchen ended up taking me about 7 days to do since I allowed for 24 hours of drying between each coat. - it was a lot of work (did it on my own) but I felt like I had a brand new kitchen when I was done - and for UNDER $100. Unreal! A note about the glaze: this really enhanced the look of my cabinets. It did take a bit of trial and error to get the look and color right but it added some warmth and dimension. I also liked that it disguised a dirty spot or two. :) Oh and I recommend googling some cabinet painting tutorials - learned some good tips and tricks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy, Great Results, Takes Time To Do It Right I am not so sure that the type of paint would have actually made a difference, as I am pretty sure that the deglosser was the key to get the excellent results. I decided to go with the Rustoleum system because I trust the brand, they took the time to actually come up with a process, and the benefit vs. cost was extremely favorable. We had old oak laminate cabinets, doors and drawers. A total of 22 pieces plus the cabinet frames. I completed the job in about 2.5 days of steady work, but had saw horses and plywood boards in almost every room so I could cycle through the steps without a lot of down time. The deglossing is critical. I did use 3 coats of bonding paint on highly visible areas and also used 2 coats of the polyurthethane coating. The kit (small kit) gives you plenty of product. I have enough left over to do a couple of dressers. You will not be disappointed with this product. It is water-based so clean-up is a breeze.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product, just make sure you have plenty of time! We took out everything in the box to make sure it is all there, the only deceiving part was the glaze- not to worry you wont need much! We bought 2 boxes in case we would run out, but we had plenty left over from the first box! The instructions were dead on but instead of a cup, use a zip lock for your hardware so you dont lose parts from doors and drawers and do a rough drawing of kitchen for reassemble. Make sure you clean the cabinets good before doing anything! The only issue we had with the product was when glazing, we glazed and let sit for darker effect. i would stick to put on and wipe off method, since the glaze drying time is what set us back. When on your final step of putting on the protective coat, (step 4) make sure you have a dry paintbrush to get the excess residue, because if not and its there when its dry- well lets say you have to start all over or live with the white glue like substance. For the price we paid and what it has done to our kitchen, it exceeded our expectations! Just remember to paint with the grain!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product, modern look! Easy step by step process. Comes with written and DVD instructions. Very nice that everything is low odor, and water soluble for easy cleanup. It will take some 'elbo grease' to degloss but that is better than sanding. You need to do two coats of the bond for full coverage. It is normal to see brush streaks in the first coat, they cover easy on the second coat. I used Espresso to cover my existing oak look. I did not use/need the glazing step. The protective final step coat starts drying quickly, so it is good to keep working and not to go back and brush over it again. If you do go back and brush over it, it will look like you did not put enough on when it dries. I received nothing but complements on the more modern turnout of my kitchen cabinets. It looks like I spent thousands. I liked the results so much that this is my second order where I am now in the process of doing my bathroom and laundry room cabinets.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Product! This product is Amazing! We recently purchased a home and the kitchen was an eyesore; however, Cabinet Transformation made it Beautiful! I tackled this project myself and followed the instructions to the "T". I didn't use the glaze however, since it didn't make much difference on the dark cabinets. I recommend using a really good 2 inch brush when applying the protective coat and follow up with a foam brush to remove excess and attack the corners. This worked like magic! I'm so pleased with the results and the before and after pictures are AMAZING! I got a little carried away and painted a microwave stand, 2 sets of bathroom cabinets in addition to the kitchen cabinets. I used 2 Expresso Kits and still had plenty of deglosser, protective coat, and even some bond coat for touchups. You can't go wrong with this product, just be sure you find some PATIENCE first! Oh yea, we called in Granite Transformations afterwards to complete the look with countertops and backsplash. Enjoy! I hope you love the pictures!

It's VERY time consuming but also very inexpensive in comparison to typical refinishing options. My minor complaints are, the proportions of each product seems a bit off, at least for our usage. And you can't order any part of the kit individually. We had to buy 5 kits (white, espresso, and gray) to do 3 bath rooms and a kitchen. This was mainly because we had to do multiple coats of the bond coat. We have SO much leftover of all the other products. 4.5 bottles of deglosser, 4 cans of glaze, 3.5 cans of top coat. Seems to be a bit of a waste not being able to order ONLY more bond coat when needed. Tips, take your time, make sure there are no runs onto the other side of which you are painting. For the top coat, don't go thick but be consistent. It dries fast, touch up is near impossible and if too thick when it dries it's a nice (or not) milky color and is quite the hassle.
