Questions & Answers

Can you put it on raw wood?

We are buying unfinished cabinets and want to use these kits and we are wondering how it works and how to get the glazed look?
Asked by: Joanna
Yes, it works great, use a primer first. We've found the Paprika with the glaze comes out really nice

Is there a Large Kit or are you just supposed to buy two?

I'm having a hard time figuring out just how much 100 square feet of coverage is and would the "small kit" be enough to do all my cupboards in the kitchen?
Asked by: jgr789
I had the same issue when calculating the square footage of the cabinets in our kitchen. Fortunately, the decision was made easy for us, as there was a good sale on the Espresso Small Cabinet Kit. However, there are additional options if desired: 100 sq Feet of Coverage - Cabinet Transformations® Dark Kit (258240), Light Kit (258109), Cabernet (263233), Espresso (263231) 200 sq Feet of Coverage - Cabinet Transformations® Dark Kit (258242).

Will this Work on a Desk and Dresser?

Do you think this would work on a desk and dresser? Do you think it might scratch too easily for them? The desk and dresser are really old - about 60 years old - and have a stain and old varnish type on them. Or, is there a better thing similar to this for furniture? I want to have them with an espresso color. They have some stain marks on them where it looks like a glass was there. Thank you.
Asked by: Microwavia
Yes it should work fine. The bonding coat covered up all of the imperfections so this should work well for you.

I have painted the kitchen cabinets. Would I have to remove the paint before using this kit?

Asked by: jhawkins
You should be able to follow the steps accordingly and have no problems. Depending on the number of coats of paint, you may have to spend more time deglossing, but you should be able to complete the transformation according to the instructions without any issues.

1-qt. Espresso Small Cabinet Kit is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 187.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product, just make sure you have plenty of time! We took out everything in the box to make sure it is all there, the only deceiving part was the glaze- not to worry you wont need much! We bought 2 boxes in case we would run out, but we had plenty left over from the first box! The instructions were dead on but instead of a cup, use a zip lock for your hardware so you dont lose parts from doors and drawers and do a rough drawing of kitchen for reassemble. Make sure you clean the cabinets good before doing anything! The only issue we had with the product was when glazing, we glazed and let sit for darker effect. i would stick to put on and wipe off method, since the glaze drying time is what set us back. When on your final step of putting on the protective coat, (step 4) make sure you have a dry paintbrush to get the excess residue, because if not and its there when its dry- well lets say you have to start all over or live with the white glue like substance. For the price we paid and what it has done to our kitchen, it exceeded our expectations! Just remember to paint with the grain!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product, modern look! Easy step by step process. Comes with written and DVD instructions. Very nice that everything is low odor, and water soluble for easy cleanup. It will take some 'elbo grease' to degloss but that is better than sanding. You need to do two coats of the bond for full coverage. It is normal to see brush streaks in the first coat, they cover easy on the second coat. I used Espresso to cover my existing oak look. I did not use/need the glazing step. The protective final step coat starts drying quickly, so it is good to keep working and not to go back and brush over it again. If you do go back and brush over it, it will look like you did not put enough on when it dries. I received nothing but complements on the more modern turnout of my kitchen cabinets. It looks like I spent thousands. I liked the results so much that this is my second order where I am now in the process of doing my bathroom and laundry room cabinets.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Product! This product is Amazing! We recently purchased a home and the kitchen was an eyesore; however, Cabinet Transformation made it Beautiful! I tackled this project myself and followed the instructions to the "T". I didn't use the glaze however, since it didn't make much difference on the dark cabinets. I recommend using a really good 2 inch brush when applying the protective coat and follow up with a foam brush to remove excess and attack the corners. This worked like magic! I'm so pleased with the results and the before and after pictures are AMAZING! I got a little carried away and painted a microwave stand, 2 sets of bathroom cabinets in addition to the kitchen cabinets. I used 2 Expresso Kits and still had plenty of deglosser, protective coat, and even some bond coat for touchups. You can't go wrong with this product, just be sure you find some PATIENCE first! Oh yea, we called in Granite Transformations afterwards to complete the look with countertops and backsplash. Enjoy! I hope you love the pictures!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely amazing finish This was the second set of cabinets I’ve used the Transformations kit on so i had a little experience on my side. I have seen a number of reviews where there were complaints with the finish peeling but if you follow the instructions and are thorough in your prep steps you can have an amazing finish. Since I was not going to glaze the cabinets I opted to spray on the coats. I sprayed even thin coats which seemed to dry in about half the time of brushing. Plus there are no brush stokes! I even sprayed on the top coat which went on very quickly. I had to keep the spray volume at a very low level since the final coat is much thinner than the base coat. Some things to remember, make sure your surfaces have been cleaned thoroughly with the deglosser and wiped with a damp cloth. Let them dry. I think this is the step many people buzz through which impacts the end results. Take your time it will be worth it in the end. The first day after you’ve painted, the coating is not fully cured so be careful with the finish. Once its cured its rock solid! Im so pleased with the results that I will be doing some bathroom cabinets next

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product, Rustoleum! Very happy with results! We recently moved into our new home and disliked the 'white-wash' or white pickled cabinets (see pictures). We looked for a quality fix without spending a bunch of money on new cabinets. As you will see from the pictures the light 'white wash' wood cabinets made the counter top look a light shade of pink. Our goal was to be able to change the look of our cabinets (darker) without buying new cabinets. We came upon the Rustoleum cabinet product and decided to try it. We are very happy with the results. Not only did the product update and re-new the look of our kitchen, it reduced the 'pink' shade to the counter tops. We followed every step of the application process and the product did exactly what it said. I would use this again in a heart-beat! Another quick note...I got lucky and got it for 50% off on Home Depot online the day it went on sale. What a deal! Thanks Home Depot and Rustoleum!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product that will save you thousands! We were going to have Home Depot reface our cabinets but saw this product in the paint department and decided to give it a try. It saved us $13,000 and our kitchen has been transformed! We used Linen on the perimeter cabinets and Expresso on the island. I followed the instructions and took my time to do it right. The glaze on the lighter color was a bit tricky to get consistent. Some cabinets came out lighter than others, but overall it gives it a Tuscan feel. After reading the horror stories about the Top Coat in the kit, I decided to follow other's suggestions and buy Varathane Polyeurthane. I didn't end up with any streaking or white residue and it was super easy to apply. I would highly recommend this product but skip the Top Coat and buy Varathane if you are using the dark kit.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Top Coat... I had high hopes for this kit in our kitchen. The instructional video made sense and things were going well, albeit slow, until I reached step 3 with the protective top coat (skipped the glaze). The coating is difficult to work with, unlike the base coat. It goes on milky white (kona base coat) and being so thin it runs and pools very easily. I've tried optimizing my technique, but the results are still unsatisfactory. The cabinets looked great after the 2nd base coat, but now they just look like some amateur painted them with a horse brush. The gloss is very difficult to distribute evenly especially on a touch up. If I go back for a touch up with the top coat, it looks super glossy and dark in one spot. Saying these variations in the top coat are frustrating after all the work I have done would be an understatement. I've spent over 5 12-hour days on this project and I'm still not done (26 cabinet doors).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome product This product has transformed our bathroom. We had old worn out oak vanities that made our bathroom look horrible. The kit has given the bathroom a beautiful modern look. The kit has very easy to follow steps that anyone can follow but you must be careful with the last step as it is tricky to apply. *The first step is hard but sure beats having to sand the wood. Get more and better scouring pads when you buy this kit. The two pads included are small and flimsy and won't be enough. *The bond coat is a breaze to apply and spreads evenly yet seems a bit thin so I'd use more than 2 coats. *I recommend that you don't skip the optional glazing step as it sure accentuates the paint job. *The top coat seems to be similar to those used for sealing floors. It is runny yet dries quickly so you have to apply it carefully around door edges as it may sag and form a white residue on the opposite side of the door you're working with. Once this happens the only way to get rid of the residue is to sand it out and then reapply the bond and top coats to the affected area. The next time I apply the top coat I'm gonna have a second clean brush handy, which I can use to remove any excess. Despite this kit being an excellent kit, I'm still not sure I'd use it on kitchen cabinets as the bond coat seems to spread so thinly that I'm really not sure how that would hold up in an area that is heavily used such as a kitchen.
