Questions & Answers

Does the cabinet surface need to be stripped (e.g., glossy paint, etc.) before applying this product?

Asked by: beginner2
Either way you still do a lot of scrubbing with the deglosser. You have to get rid of the shine on the existing finish or the paint won't adhere as well. With the amount of elbow grease you might as well use an orbital sander and sand it down. Probably easier and provides a better base for the paint. You just need to scrub the tight crevices afterwards.

Do I have to get the dark bond kit tinted somewhere? Mine is almost a clear color?

Asked by: Hortonsizefun
When you purchase this product, you get it tinted at the paint counter to the color you want. The colors available are listed on the box. Note: The colors shown on the box are slightly lighter.

Approximately how many cabinets will one kit cover?

Asked by: beginner
There is a formula you can use to find out how much this kit will cover. I bought the small kit & it did both of my (SMALL) bathrooms. In total, it covered 2 small vanities & their doors (6 doors total) as well as my overhead small storage cabinets + their doors (2 doors total). Hope this helps!

Can I use a cloth to wipe on the clear coat instead of brushing it?

Can I use a cloth to wipe on the clear coat instead of brushing it?
Asked by: Gem
I wouldn't recommend using a cloth to wipe on the top coat because of consistency of product and recommendation not to over-brush. It dries quickly and this is the final sheen that will seal in the paint and protect all of your hard work. Don't skimp on the cost of the brush (you don't want to pick out "brush hair" during the entire process). When in doubt, contact Rustoleum's customer service 1 (877) 385-8155.

I will say it is A LOT of work and very time consuming. I'm nearing the end and am so tired of painting. Although the finished product looks really good. Take your time! We decided to use a small foam roller on the doors and large cabinet areas even though directions say 2 inch brush. We didn't use the glaze and could see some brush marks. The top coat is super runny so be sure to keep a look out for pooling & drips. I just brushed away lightly when they appeared. This is a great DIY product. Very happy with results.

I refinished my bathroom cabinets in two weekends and they went from ugly, old out-of-date white melamine builder's grade cabinets to a rich, warm espresso that look amazing. The kit is easy to use and the instructions are clear and easy to follow. Just ensure you allow enough time to let each step dry thoroughly and give yourself enough space to be able to lay out all the cabinet doors. I used soup cans from the pantry to elevate the doors so that I could easily paint the edges. I also suggest checking the doors and frames periodically while each step is drying so you can wipe up any drips that slowly appear, otherwise the drips will show when fully dried. I added modern hardware and my cabinets look completely brand new. I saved thousands of dollars in my bathroom remodel by not having to buy new cabinets. By the way, I'm not a professional painter or tradesman - just the homeowner. Check out the "before" photo and the end result. Truly a transformation. Thanks, Rust-Oleum!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bright white has yellowed after just a few months. Really not impressed with this cabinet painting kit. We purchased two of the light color cabinet kits from Home Depot in the brightest white shade. When we opened the paint can for the first time only a few weeks after buying the kits the paint was chunky. We tried to return the unused kits and were told they were non refundable so we decided to go ahead and use them anyway instead of lose $150. I was able to remove the clumpy bits from the paint and was surprised at how well the cabinets turned out, at first. However, just after a month the bright white has yellowed and now looks dirty and uneven. I followed the direction exactly, the only difference is I chose not to use the decorative glaze because it just wasn't the look I was going for. I'm very upset because it took a lot of time and effort to paint our cabinets and now they look worse than before. I don't know if it was the paint or the top coat that caused the yellowing but I don't recommend buying this kit if you want bright white cabinets.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well worth the time and money After reading reviews and watching YouTube videos we decided to go ahead and give it a shot. We wanted to redo our ktchen without spending a ton of money. We redid our backsplash and painted before doing our cabinets. We went with the PURE WHITE. Everyone has their own style but what worked for me was the following: First I took a rag with soap and water and cleaned every cabinet. After drying with clean rag I used the de glosser that came with kit. Works very well on removing dirt and grease marks. Next I let sit for an hr. (Only negative about this kit is its very time consuming) next I used a 2" brush and painted along sides and corners making sure there was no build up. Some comments I saw left yellow tint so I made sure to do this part carefully. After I used brush I went with a small roller. Took roughly 3 coats. Final coat for protective coating I used a brush. Very pleased with results so far, however I did have to go back and purchase a second kit as you will run out of paint.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Old cabinets made new I have been trying to get up the nerve to refinish my cabinets for years. I finally took the leap and bought this product and did it. I am so happy with the results! I did this completely by myself with my husband only helping me put the doors back up once finished. I used all the products in the box and found it extremely easy to use. The glazing took a few doors for me to figure out how it worked, but by the time I flipped them over to the front I had it figured out. The protective coating went on smooth but you really have to make sure not to try to go back over sections that are beginning to dry. I allowed each step to dry over night before moving on to the next and I am very pleased with the results. Bought new hardware and for about $150 I have a new kitchen. Took me about three weeks to completely refinish all cabinets because I had to do them in sections due to limited space, but worth every penny I spent!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Damaged Package I am leaving this review before I’ve actually used the product. I ordered this online and was so excited. I tracked the package, and removed all my cabinets and hardware anticipating it’s arrival. Once it got here, one of the cans had leaked into the box. The stir sticks were stuck to the side of the box, the instruction manual was stuck together (which wasn’t a problem due to all the online videos) but the cloths were ruined and the protective coat can was empty. It was a mess. I was hoping Home Depot or Rust-Oleum would have some consideration and let me go ahead and use step 1 and 2 cans while I waited for the new kit to arrive. However, they wouldn’t do it. I had to return the items and now I have to wait for the entire package to arrive. Meanwhile my cabinets are laying in my garage and my main living area is a mess. I just wish they’d been more considerate and compensated me for the inconvinience, but they didn’t. So I’m angry.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product delivered exactly what it promised! I am very pleased with the outcome of my cabinet restoration. It was a lot of hard work, but if you follow the directions exactly and take your time, the results are fantastic! I did the white glazed effect on my 18 year old white cabinets and I cannot believe the difference. They are beautiful. My only "constructive" comment: It takes 2 people longer than a weekend for a standard sized kitchen. I have 29 cabinets and drawers (combined), and it took us 4 straight days of hard work to complete (and I am not counting taking everything out of the cabinets, putting doors back on and putting everything back into the cabinets). But again, the results are well worth it. Don't skimp on the "de-glossing" stage. We scrubbed every area for at least 2-3 minutes, and I think this makes the difference. Just take your time and don't rush. For the $69 (on sale) I spent on the kit and maybe another $100 in random supplies, I have new cabinets that look professionally done.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressive Results! I repainted my light wood color kitchen cabinets with this product and I was so impressed and pleased with the results. The prep work - cleaning and deglossing - did take a while but I think it made the end result better. And a word of advice - you need lots of surface area to work and lay out the cabinets. I did about two coats on each side plus I did the decorative glaze. My 10x10 kitchen ended up taking me about 7 days to do since I allowed for 24 hours of drying between each coat. - it was a lot of work (did it on my own) but I felt like I had a brand new kitchen when I was done - and for UNDER $100. Unreal! A note about the glaze: this really enhanced the look of my cabinets. It did take a bit of trial and error to get the look and color right but it added some warmth and dimension. I also liked that it disguised a dirty spot or two. :) Oh and I recommend googling some cabinet painting tutorials - learned some good tips and tricks.
