Q:After curing the mortar on the floor plate it has bubbled up in a few spots. Can it be sanded to a smooth finish or should I just leave it alone? If it can be sanded what grade or grit would you recommend? Thank You.

Answer This Question

A:  Hi PeteM, thanks for your interest in Rutland Gray Fireplace Mortar. Typically this cement bubbles because the heat-cure was done too quickly or the temperature was brought up too quickly. You may be fine sanding down the bubbles, but it may be smart to apply more product over the bubbles to strengthen the application. Q:I have a zero clearance fireplace and the floor plate is pitted and chipped. Can I use the tube mixture directly on the plate and trowel it to a smooth finish? The chips are less than 1/4" deep. The damaged area is 3/4 square feet.

A:  Hi PeteM, thanks for your interest in Rutland Gray Fireplace Mortar. Due to the thickness of some of the chips, I would recommend using our Dry Mix 211 to repair the pitted and chipped refractory panel in your zero-clearance fireplace. Dry Mix 211 can be applied anywhere from paper-thin up to 1" in thickness, so it can easily handle the voids that you will need to fill. Dry Mix 211 cures at room temperature in 24 hours. A:  Hi Mary, thanks for your interest in Rutland 10.3 fl. oz. Fireplace Mortar Cartridge in Gray. Thank you for reaching out. Unfortunately, the Rutland 10.3 fl. oz. Fireplace Mortar Cartridge in Gray does not adhere to metal surfaces. For your specific needs around the fireplace, I recommend using RUTLAND Furnace Cement. RUTLAND Furnace Cement: Premixed and ready to use, making application easy. Suitable for bonding and sealing metal to metal or metal to masonry joints less than 1/8". Requires a heat cure for optimal performance. Heat Curing Process: Begin by starting and maintaining a kindling or small fire, allowing it to burn for one hour. After one hour, gradually build the fire to a roaring state (at least 500°F) and maintain this larger fire for an additional hour. The entire heat curing process should take approximately 2 ½ hours. Please note that if the heat cure is not performed within 21 days of application, the cement or mortar may become brittle, fragile, and lose adhesion over time. If you need further support, you can call us at 1-800-544-1307 Mon-Fri. You can also email us at sales@rutland.com. Went on as expected. Dried quickly with a fan. i used a torch to cure the paint. Be careful and not put the flame too close to the dried caulk. It will bubble if you get the blue part of the flame too close. Just the end of the orange flame will work fine. Read the instructions.
