RUTLAND Fireplace Mortar is perfect for repairing small chips or cracked firebrick, re-pointing mortar joints between firebricks, and bonding firebricks together. Adheres masonry to masonry for brick, firebrick, and stone. Easy to apply with a caulking gun and will last for years. It sets as hard and as strong as firebrick after curing and can withstand the high temperatures produced by a wood fire.

Q:Do you have to seal this with a paint after filling cracks with this in a brick gas fireplace? Or would the painting be just cosmetic? And if you do paint what paint do you recommend?

This is good stuff. I used it to fix some small cracks in the fireplace. The only thing did not like is the package said it should dry 24 hours before curing. 36 hours before curing would have been better. It worked well and cured but there was one spot where it bubbled up.
