A:  not flat, parallel yes, what I mean is it folds but the shelf surface is out from the wall about 1 inch Plus the shelf thickness. THis is all parallel to the wall when folded, hope that helps

    A:  I have been using the set of brackets with a 1 inch piece of plywood attached as the shelf surface. I have not looked at the rating but I regularly have 4 lbs of radio gear on the shelf

    Purchased these for my guesthouse/soon to be airbnb rental, which has a rather narrow area for queen bed. With install of two of these folding units, with a piece of live edge wood as shelf material, a single guest can fold one down and slide bed way over against wall, or two people can use queen bed with one small nightstand/shelf on each side! Perfect solution.

      One of the brackets broke when I tried to fold it up, pulling apart at the weld. The plastic bushings in the joint are too tight!
