Questions & Answers

What is the difference between this trimmer and the other cheaper 40v Ryobi Trimmer (Model # RY40210A)?

Asked by: Boomer
This model is expandable meaning that you can purchase other devices to replace the cutting head. The cheaper model wasn't "expandable" and I'm not sure, but I believe that the cheaper model did not have a brushless motor which I consider a real plus.

Cutting head rotation

Which way does the cutting head rotate? I want a trimmer that rotates the way most curved shaft trimmers rotate and I believe that is clock wise.
Asked by: PMP350
Looking down on them, most straight shaft trimmers turn counter clockwise and most curved shaft trimmers turn clockwise, in order to keep manufacturing costs down (fewer gears). You will find straight shaft trimmers are designed with a poor head angle, especially when using an extension, and for anyone who is not taller than average (more than 50% of us) and will kick back debris on right handed operators. You will find curved shaft trimmers difficult to find and buy ("out of stock", etc) The ideal would be an adjustable angle head, similar to my hedge trimmer attachment, with a bevel gear to reverse the spin to clockwise.

Bought one of these last night. Ready to get started. Next question is after battery is charged where is best place to store battery?

On charger? Off of the charger? On the attachment? Should battery be exposed to hot and cold temps in storage shed?
Asked by: DoDa
Thank you for asking, DoDa. To obtain the longest possible battery life, we suggest removing the battery pack from the charger once it is fully charged and ready for use. For battery pack storage longer than 30 days, store the battery pack where the temperature is below 80°f and away from moisture, store battery packs in a 30%-50% charged condition, and every six months of storage, we recommend charging the battery pack as normal. Great question! I hope this helps. –Keri

Is this 40 volt battery interchangeable with 40 volt self-propelled lawn mower?

Asked by: MW
Sure is! Honestly, I really love this system. I bought the trimmer, chainsaw and blower as well as the mower. No more pulling a cord on a tempermental gas mower. The noise difference is amazing as well. Glad I made the switch

40-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless Attachment Capable String Trimmer - 2.6 Ah Battery and Charger Included is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 2918.

Well balanced in your hands. Smooth operation with minimal vibration. I have a large yard and this trimmer has plenty of battery on one charge to trim it all. After my first time doing my entire yard I had to run the trimmer an extra 15mins to finish off the battery completely for the first charge. The power is not quite equal to a gas trimmer but the torque is plenty strong. The head speed is slower than a gas trimmer which makes the cutting a little bit slower, but the torque will cut almost anything a gas string trimmer will, just at a little bit slower rate. This slower cutting may add 2-5min to a total yard trim so it's pretty inconsequential. That said I think this is an amazing tool for the money that does a great job and is well thought out. I'm very happy with the purchase and the added ease of use, not needing to keep mixed gas or smell like exhaust when I'm done.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I've been impressed with the capability of the 40V power... I've been impressed with the capability of the 40V power head; it doesn't give up much to the 2-stroke head I've had. My yard is fairly large, and the string trimmer has to deal with St. Augustinegrass, which is very tough stuff. The Expand-It capability was one feature that sold me - I've used the system for years, so now I have the whole set with battery power! I haven't used the trimmer head that comes with the unit - I instead use the older head that I have loaded with some sexy .90 string that lasts longer against the grass.I've used the hedge trimmer attachment, and it is superior to the gas head in handling and portability.I bought the leaf blower for the battery to use as a back-up, and discovered after I got it home that it was 'bigger' than the trimmer battery. My only suggestion is that Ryobi should package the trimmer with the same battery that comes with the leaf blower - a 3.0AH unit. The 2.6AH doesn't quite make it for my whole yard if I get behind and let it get too 'wooly'.

Overall, I really like the product since I do not have to bother with gas and oil and hard starting and all that. The action of the head is excellent as it does the trimming efficiently without any problems. I just bought it and used it once and thought that the actual use time is short compared to the charge time. This interrupts my work schedule to recharge the unit. I am an average sized man but thought that the trimmer is a little heavy with the battery installed than most trimmers. I ended up with a slight sore shoulder. Also, it is a slight bit difficult keeping the two handles closed to keep the trimmer operating. At times, you have to let go for a hand break. I guess I could say that it meets my expectations but I wish it had a longer use time after charging and it was a little lighter. Finally, the bump-feed mechanism did not always work for me. However, I still had enough string out to do the job. The biggest thing is that I hate to stop my work for that long charge.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Definitely a step up from gas I've had this trimmer for a month and have used it 3 times now as an edger for my lawn. It does a great job and the handle can be adjusted so when I hold it the trimmer head is in the right position for edging. It has good power, maybe not quite as strong as a gas trimmer but still strong enough to do the job. The benefit is that I will NEVER again have to deal with a finicky, quirky, smelly, messy 2-stroke combustion engine. That in itself is worth switching to electric, and this cordless model gives you the same mobility as a gas trimmer, but is much lighter weight. Additionally, the modularity of the quick attachment system allows me to use my attachments from my previous old Ryobi trimmer, including my blower, tiller, and a trimmer with plastic cutting blades. These were all over 20 years old and still work with this new battery powered unit. Thanks to Ryobi for saving me money by making their new tools backwards compatible with their old stuff. This is a nice trimmer with a lot of power (I was moving through blackberries with no problem). It's highly rated in CR (why I bought it) and met my expectations. Run-time was good for me. I'd rate it higher if I could adjust the position of the handle to get it better balanced (I'm not tall or particularly strong). I bought a second unit to have a spare battery because the price difference between the full unit and the battery is minimal. I may not need the 2nd battery in retrospect, but that 2nd unit comes in handy when other people are helping the job. The unit can be disassembled/assembled very quickly, so storage is easy, and it can be tossed into a car in two smaller pieces. It comes with a string winder, which should make replacing string easier- though I have not had to use it yet.

I bought the Ryobi cordless mower and am very pleased with it, although am somewhat skeptical as to how it will hold up over time. I decided to get this trimmer and a blower that use the same battery. They both work fine as expected, and this would have been given 5 stars except for the poor and unsatisfactory customer service. I recycled the packaging after using the tools the first time, then went to register them with Ryobi, using the model numbers on the tools. Wrong thing to do!! The tool model numbers will not allow registration. Only the model numbers on the boxes can be used to register, and they are different than the ones on the tools. No boxes, no registration. After 5 emails with customer service, over a 20 day period, nothing resolved, and the tools are still not registered, and according to Ryobi, cant be. Bottom line, OK tool, but save the boxes until you are registered. Who ever heard of a tool that cant be registered with the model number on the tool?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Powerful battery powered trimmer I bought this product about a month ago. My yard is 1 acre and the battery lasts for 2 trimmings of my yard. Powerful and cuts through even the tall wild grasses i have on my property. The only reason i did not give this a 5 star was bc of the way the gaurd is set up and the direction that the line spins. It spins counter clockwise, and being mainly operated in my right hand it causes a ton of grass to be thrown at my legs. The guard is set up to block of from that direction but doesnt do a very good job at it. So i just make sure to wear pants and have to get used to the counter direction of the spin. (Im used to a gas powered that spins clockwise, which makes it easier in my opinion trimming edges and fence lines.) Other than that, the tool is very well built and balanced well. For some it may be a bit heavy but compared to a gas powered its much lighter. And it feels like a gas powered in your hands, which is another reason i like it. It feels powerful. Rated 2 out of 5 by from Can't review because the battery was DOA! Read lots of reviews before purchasing - had concerns about the number of people complaining about the battery. However, I didn't expect a DOA battery after assembling the Stringer. Blinking red/green lights = defective. 3 calls to Ryobi and I now have to wait 7-10 days for Ryobi to send a new battery with no guarantees that the new battery won't be defective. Not sure how Ryobi can work with a battery supplier with so many issues. Ryobi - consider some goodwill eg upgraded battery replacement, % off on an attachment, etc.
