Questions & Answers

pro's and con's straight shaft verse's angle shaft

pro's and con's straight shaft verse's angle shaft
Asked by: grizzly
Straight shaft is better if you need to get under or between brush because the curved/angled shaft is limited by how far it can reach before low brush holds the trimmer from reaching any further, this is particularly an issue using a brush cutter, so much so you rarely see a brush cutter blade on a curved shaft anymore.

I bought this to replace an aging one on a Ryobi ES (Electric Start) model I've had for about 15 years. I really didn't want to buy the entire thing; all I needed was the spool piece which had all but disintegrated. Unfortunately that replacement spool part was no longer available. The nice thing is that this one hooked up to my existing old motor/shaft unit exactly, and I was right back at work. Nice to know Ryobi basically kept a design that works. It was cheaper than buying an entire new line trimmer, although after 15 years I wouldn't have minded. Buying just the trimmer part did keep the budget-conscious wife happy :-)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Could be better! Although the straight shaft trimmer does an excellent job cutting short grass ( 8 to 10 inches), it tends to, if one is not careful, wrap longer grass around the spool hub and the gear head. I am aware that the instructions call for cutting tall grass from the top down, but certain circumstances do not allow this,e.g. under evergreens. In my case, I have modified the spool by extending the spool hub, with plumbing products, to cover the gear head hub as far as I could go. I still get the wraparound if I become too aggressive in tall grass, but not as often without the mod. Works well. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saved me money! The weed eater attachment that came with my Troybilt weed eater failed (the metal pole inside broke off completely). I thought I would be in the market for a new weed eater completely and found this attachment online. It saved the day and saved me tons of money since my Troybilt motor still worked fine. I can tell you that I've purchased several RYOBI products over the past year, including drill, impact drill, and circular saw. The RYOBI products are fantastic and priced very well too. I will definitely be purchasing more of their tools in the future. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Nice unit until it came time to replace the cutting line for the first and second times. First, H... Nice unit until it came time to replace the cutting line for the first and second times. First, Home Depot sells a 3-Pack of quick change spools that DO NOT work with this model. The directions say they fit the 40-volt models, but believe me, they don't fit the EXPAND-IT trimmer. Second, the instructions are absolutely useless. I'm an engineer and follow directions well, but it doesn't take an engineer to tell the difference between clockwise and counter-clockwise. The instructions direct the operator to turn the spool CCW to load string...nope won't work. Third, don't start with the directions. Start with a YOUTUBE search for this model. There you will find two different ways to successfully re-string the spool.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from This seems to work fine. What irritates me is... This seems to work fine. What irritates me is that I had to buy it at all. The curved shaft which came as part of the trimmer I originally purchased a year ago was utterly useless. I spent about 30 minutes of respooling for every five minutes of actually trimming. The feed out just didn't work and I have NEVER had this sort of issue with the trimmers I used over the past 40 years of being a homeowner. I noticed the spool mechanism is entirely different for the straight shaft, so maybe Ryobi hired and listened to a better engineer this time around.
