I am in the market for a brush trimmer attachment for my RYOBI 4 cycle gas powered trimmer. I see from the raving reviews that this makes easy work of trimming down shrubbery. Can this also be used to trim down the hedges ? Some of the branches on the hedges are 1/2" to 5/8" thick. ?
Asked by: NandaK1
I've used it to trim brush, but I can't guarantee it will handle 1/2" to 5/8" bushes. It probable will, but the thicker brush will slow it down. I'm happy with mine.

My existing Ryobi 40Volt string trimmer (#RY40220) has a front handle - square-shaped, like most Ryobi tools. I just received this Brush cutter attachment, and it comes with another handle (J-shaped). The instructions are very unclear, but it seems they want the new J-handle to be installed where the current handle is, on the Power shaft, not on the brush cutter attachment. Is this right? Does it take the place of the existing handle that is on the Power shaft? I don't really see any significant difference between the two in ergonomic performance. Can I just continue to use the existing handle that comes with the power head? Or is there some design benefit that someone thought up regarding the brush attachment and this J-shape? If so, can I just use the J-shape for the trimmer attachment as well?
Asked by: johngillis
I just left the original handle in place, it works great.

Customer Reviews

Expand-It 8 in. Brush-Cutter Trimmer Attachment is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 506.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from skeptical but surprised I had the beginnings of a forrest growing in my back yard. weeds loomed as tall as my 11 year old son and saplings as tall as I am. we bought the brush cutter to go on our recently purchased 40 volt ryobi weed eater and without much hope, I went to work. the weeds fell quickly as I brandished my techno sword. as i laughed in a maniacal breath, one by one the saplings (some bigger around than my thumb) splintered and fell before me. heaving gallons of fresh air and covered in the sap and tissue of a thousand thousand weeds and trees, I proclaimed my victory! then the wife told me I had to "clean that stuff up now". so yes, it works. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Happily surprised! I bought the 40V - 15" string trimmer hoping that (1) it wasn't too heavy - it is lighter than my electric (cord) trimmer; (2) the battery would last to get the job done (lasts longer if you're not in 'full out constant cut mode); (3) it would take care of the cutting job I needed. While at the store I found the Brush-cutter Attachment and purchased it at same time. I don't use the string trimmer attachment at all. This is my go to attachment. It cuts just about everything from high weeds to clumped/dense grasses. I might actually have to purchase another blade. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well exceeded expectations I don't review things often, but this thing warranted the time. I had some tall brush behind my house, some up to 1" thick. I didn't expect much from this attachment but boy was I wrong. It far and away exceeded my expectations. I own a Craftsman 25cc weed eater with the universal attachment system and this fit perfectly. It spins up easily, chews through brush with no effort, and made clearing my backyard a breeze. The only thing that slows it down is when you actually hit the ground, but even that's momentary. Didn't have any issues with tangling either. I would highly recommend it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Couldn't be without it I've had this about 2 months now and wouldn't be able to trim back the over grown brush without it. I've even cut small patches of grass where its difficult to get the mover in. The string trimmer is easy for this as well but gets tangled if the grass is too long. To a lesser degree the Brush cutter has this issue as well so I've learned to take it slower so there's less tangle. the weight is a bit less then the gas trimmer and wished it were lighter but I have a bad shoulder anyway so may not be everyones problem. Quieter then gas and no messy fuels to figure out to mix...Love it [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 4 out of 5 by from durable and getts the job done I bought the Ryobi brush cutter because i recieved a phone call from an older couple in my town asking if I can help with making a fire line around their house knowing what would be needed to cut down the amount of weeds they had around their house. when I started using the brush cutter i was skeptical but it did the work not only did it cut down everything they now have a safe fire line around their home. Thank you for making a great product. The only down side about this product is it does not have sharpened edges like a lawnmower blade does. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does the job I need it to. I bought the Brush Cutter Attachment with the Ryobi power head. It preformed exactly as I need it to. Mostly weeds and small brush up 1/4" diameter I think it's a very good product for the price. Very nice to be able to use so many brands from one manufacturer just in case. I did write Ryobi and recommended them making shaft extension piece. I think it would help me so I can stand back out of the poison ivy while trimming brush. My friend said would like like because he is taller and it would make it easier to stand while trimming. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well...did the job I bought this Brush Cutter for a specific job...to clean up an invasive bamboo "jungle" my dad planted decades ago (thanks Dad!) that my family's been battling with for years. The cutter worked as advertised with my gas-powered Ryobi trimmer. I was able to quickly mow down the "sprouts" and patiently cut through 2 - 2 1/2 inch diameter bamboo stalks in a small fraction of the time it normally took. The blade did get stuck in the stalks periodically, but if I took my time and cut those monsters carefully from right to left the cutter would cleanly slice through them. It was worth its price just for that first job....and it will face more of the same in the future! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works for me I have now used the brush cutter twice and it does what I need it to do so far. It seems to be rugged enough to endure my environment here on the river in Az. This unit is lighter than another I looked at so I thought it would be easier to hold and maneuver. The only complaint I have is that the strap that was included is twisted and is sewn that way. I don't know if that's intentional or not. I can't imagine why that would be. I'm thinking that it is a mistake. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
