What's the R value of this underlayment?

How is this used with glue down flooring? Does the underlayment get glued to the subfloor first?

Asked by Neednewfloors February 3, 2021

Answer

Yes, adhere to the substrate first. Apply the finished floor covering manufacturer's recommended pressure sensitive adhesive and allow to flash until tacky. Use a 75 or 100 lb three section roller to secure the underlayment to the substrate prior to installation of the finished flooring.

Are there any major differences between this and the QuietWalk brand also sold at Home Depot?

Asked by Dawn July 26, 2020
1
Answer

The difference is the material they are made out of primarily. QuietWalk is a recycled fiber mix that does offer a bit more sound control in lab situations and in reviews, insulating value, and moisture emissions allowance from concrete at 5lbs per 1000sf per day. Because of QuietWalk's dense construction, it hold up longer over time and not crush as easily vs foam based underlayments. Crosslink foams like Soundstep do perform well, but if you look at the features side by side...the better attributes do favor QuietWalk.

Can I throw this on my walls and ceiling as well for sound proofing purposes?

Asked by Cris May 28, 2020
1
Answer

Please note that I am a carpenter, rather than a sound engineer That said, due to the closed cell nature of this product I do not believe that this would be my product of choice. The sound dampening effect is more intended to reduce squeaking caused by floating floor systems rubbing against the subfloor. To my experience the better choice for your application might be an open cell "egg crate" style foam or one of the sound dampening products designed for this use.

Adding a premium foam underlayment offers other benefits compared to moisture barrier such as compression resistance, sound absorption and thermal value to keep your floors warm. You will have to contact the flooring manufacture to see if it serves as a moisture barrier.

Can you use this with lifeproof floating vinyl floors??

Yes, underneath of course. Not sure why the other answer assumed you're putting underlayment on top of a floating vinyl floor :)

This sound step foam underlayment I got to go under my laminate flooring. This product comes in 100 sq. feet (4ft X 25ft). It was easy to install, just unroll, cut and when you need to add another row just unroll, cut, overlap over first row, pull the tape strip off and stick together. I like the thickness of this sound control when walking on the floor there is little to no sound (like a hollow noise). It is also a moisture barrier, I'm putting this floor on concrete and need that barrier. I've used other underlayments but this one is the best so far.

This underlayment from Sound Step is great, it gives insulation feature and vapor barrier all in one. It also cushions the floor giving a quieter walking surface. It is cross linked foam in 48 inch width, by 25 feet long. I would recommend letting it lay out after unrolling before starting to place the laminate flooring. It is suitable for laminate and wood flooring. It covers 100 square feet or approximately a 10 foot by 10 foot room. The yellow strip is for overlaying with the next piece to insure even flooring.

I chose this Sound Step foam underlayment for a variety of reasons, but primarily for its leak-proof moisture barrier properties, since I wanted an underlayment for use in both my main bath and my kitchen. What I got in this Sound Step product, though, was a product with so much more-- it has excellent sound reduction ratings, so it's ideal on any level of your home, and is suitable to use in conjunction with glue-down or floating installs. You can even use SoundStep with your radiant heat flooring installations. I was impressed with the durability of the 2-mil thick polyethylene foam -- it's cushion-y and makes your laminate or engineered flooring more quiet and comfortable to walk on. The feature I most appreciate is the pre-attached adhesive strip along one edge of the foam -- you simply butt together two strips of the underlayment, then peel off the backing strip on the tape, exposing the tape lip, which you pull over and secure to the adjacent section's edge. Voile-- you've got a perfect, waterproof seal. Makes the install fast & foolproof-- very handy! There are ample instructions to guide you through all the various types of installations (though I'd like to see some illustrations added.) I used this in a floating floor application, so it was pretty straightforward. This underlayment provides quiet, comfort and peace of mind at a great price-- highly recommend.

I put in flooring in my kitchen and living room. The kitchen was linoleum and not fully even. Plus I was not removing the linoleum. The living room was carpet on concrete. I needed something sufficiently thick to keep the boards from feeling every blemish and from clacking. This worked great. There is a 600 sq ft roll on Home Depot that I also bought to finish the job. It is quiet and worked great.

This product I really like, I had installed a laminate floor before in my place and it had a plastic sheet on top and bottom with small foam balls that made noise for about a half year after the installation. But this product is just a foam sheet that has a good water resistance, soft, no noise when walking on it and it has an strip of adhesive to attach another roll of foam right next to it and also seal from moisture.

Sound step is a foam rubber underlay for laminate flooring and it works well to dampen the sounds of footsteps. It has double sided tape on the edge to adhere to the floor and on the seams. It says to use a 75 to 100 hundred pound roller to adhere it but I used a rolling pin and it worked just fine.It is very smooth and was easy to put down.It didn't move around once set and made the laying of the flooring easy.Directions are well written and easy to follow.Going to get more for the bathroom, will make a great water barrier under the flooring.I really like how well it is made.

I'm very impressed with the SoundStep premium cross-linked foam underlayment and I'm using it on stairs and hallway to provide a quieter floor in those areas. It's about the same thickness of other underlayments, but with much better sound control with a Delta IIC rating of 23. I'm using it under a wood laminate floor, but it's also approved floating engineered wood, laminate and glue down wood floors. It's compression resistant and works well with the click together system. It provides moisture protection and has a self seal tape to join it. It comes in a 100sf roll (48"x25') I definitely recommend it as a superior quality product that is also cost effective.

Sound Step underlayment is a superb and very high quality product. It is also quite easy To install. It is nice and wide, and covers a lot of area. It went down very easily and stays flat. It doesn’t have memory curl from being rolled up. I really like that it comes with adhesive already on it. Simply lay it out, peel the strip off the self adhesive and you are ready to go. Very easy to use, high quality and makes the floor feel and sound very quiet.

Pretty easy to use though it is easier to join the sections with the pre-installed taping system if you have two people to hold them in alignment while you secure the tape to be sure the sheets are straight and smooth. One person can do it (I did) but it would be easier with 2. The fold over tape held well for me and completes the vapor barrier if you need it. The 4 foot wide sheets meant I had less seams in the underlayment compared to the 3 foot underlayment I used in a prior room. This underlayment is thin (see Pic) but effective. The floating floor I installed over it is quiet and there is no noticeable give as I had with another thicker product in the other room. Does the job and doesn't add thickness to your installation.

I love this stuff. I used it in a hallway that was very noisy to the rooms underneath it and now you can barely hear a thing underneath. It was like soundproofing the floor which i love because the only other option would be to rip the drywall down and put insulation in the ceiling underneath. I am very happy with this product and it worked very effectively
