Q:What bugs come from this plant and dose it get real big
by|Jul 10, 2023

Answer This Question

A:  Bugs don’t come from plants - unless they hitchhike from the nursery/grower. If you’re asking what bugs typically attack loropetalum - aphids, spider mites, and Japanese beetles are a few pests that may attack these plants - although I’ve never experienced pest issues on loropetalum.  These are a dwarf weeping variety ( purple pixie ) - they get about 1 foot tall and aboit 2-3 feet wide ( wider than tall ) and look best in a potted arrangement so they can spill over the sides of the pot.  In the garden - I’d prefer the purple daydream variety for a dwarf loropetalum with a more typical shrub habit of growth.

Q:I have the larger variety planted throughout my landscaping. I live in zone 7 and this year the temp dropped down to 27* and freezing. All of my plants leaves have turned brown. I hope they have not die. Is this usual for the species?

    Answer This Question

A:  For some plants, the tops can die off but the roots may not be dead. My (not expert) answer is to wait and watch. See if any new growth appears as the weather warms.

A:  Planting zone 7 is the lower borderline for the Purple Pixie. When you have plants on the borderline of temperance it is necessary to take precautions to protect these plants from harsh weather.

        Q:Can this be divided?

        Answer This Question

A:  No, the Purple Pixie Loropetalum, as well as other loropetalums, are not able to be divided. They are a single stem plant with a distributary root system.

Q:Is the Purple Pixie Dwarf Loropetalum RABBIT resistant? All I can see online is that it's deer resistant .

          Answer This Question

A:  I have plenty of rabbits in my yard, on a farm, and they have not eaten any of this shrub.

            3 found this answer helpful

A:  We do not measure for rabbit resistancy. Rabbits, from my experience, will eat anything they can find if they are hungry enough.

Ordered online and would consider expensive especially since they really didnt have a root system on 3 out of 3. I hope they make it but not sure they will. This picture is the last one and was the best. Planted today so we will see

The plants were healthy and of a reasonable size. One of the 3 plants I ordered had been banged up a bit during shipping but is doing fine now that it is planted in the ground.

                    Not Healthy
This plant was shipped from Georgia and arrived alive. It was not actively dying. I thought I'd take a chance on helping it do more than survive. It was potted with care and has been on my balcony for almost a month, I've tried letting the soil become dry before watering and then letting it be moist. It doesn't seem to be dead or actively dying, but it doesn't seem too happy either. Going to repot it, checking to make sure it is comfortable with the soil mixture to prevent root rot. :)

                        Not as displayed
Plants did not resemble product that was displayed. They were very small and scrawny looking. It's not that they had leaves that died in route as there were no dead leaves in package. They just had very little foliage to begin with. Product not as offered or expected.

Beautiful Large Plants - Well packaged and arrived quickly
These 2 gallon purple pixie loripetalums are stunning. Great size and packed well and arrived quickly. I order a lot of plants via mailorder and our carriers here do good job handling the plants - even making sure they are placed in a sheltered location ( shaded /covered porch ). The color is so vivid on these shrubs - a beautiful deep purple to the foliage. I wanted to also comment on several folks mentioning the lack of roots - loropetalum are not deep rooted plants and they are extremely brittle ( similar to witch hazel shrubs ). It is very easy to snap the tops from the roots - to plant these beautiful shrubs you need to water the pot deeply prior to planting to encourage the soil to bind together. Then carefully lace the fingers of one hand under the branches around the trunks open palm against the top of the soil. Flip the pot and plant over and with your other hand carefully lift the pot from the plant keeping the soil / rootball intact. Support the rootball and place into your prepared hole in your garden bed. Plant them high about 1” above the soil line - back fill the hole with the excavated soil and settle the soil in with water. Don’t step on the ground around the plant to compact the dirt. Gentle pressure with your hands and a good soaking will settle the soil sufficently and remove any air pockets. Let it settle in a couple of days and check the soil before watering again. Loropetalum need to dry out between waterings. A good indication is the leaves - if you start to see a red hue to a few of the center leaves - its dry and its time to give it a good long soak again. I’ve ordered from home depot quite often and have successfully planted using the technique above several varieties of Southern Livings Loropetalum ( Purple Pixie, Purple Daydream, and Purple Diamond ). Over a dozen plants in 4 garden beds in both full sun and partial sun - haven’t lost one yet - all are beautiful and thriving. One more tip - they are sensitive to salt - so if you have your spinklers or hose bibs on softened water - you need to turn it off and flush the lines before watering these plants. I think these Pixies are my favorite. Absolutely beautiful - highly recommend.
