can I use this on a bathroom floor thats concrete

Asked by Leslie October 18, 2020

Answer

Tile should stick quite well to concrete. If tile won’t stick to your concrete then Kerdi won’t either. Iti uses the same thinset as an adhesive that you used for your tile. Check your concrete to see if it is contaminated with oil or wax. If so you’ll need to remove it with a TSP solution before amything will stick. Try just putting a layer of thinset on the concrete in a small area. If it adheres your tile should stick. You could have an issue with uneven concrete and/or insufficient thinset thickness. See how uneven your concrete is with a straight edge. You might need to use leveller to even it out. Another idea: Install a tile using your normal method, then pull it up with a flatbar. The lines on the thinset should be “mushed down” everywhere. If not then you need to use a trowel with bigger notches or apply more pressure after placing the tile. Good luck!

Can this be used as an uncoupling under layment for tile placement in a bathroom if used with Fle...

No. This is for waterproofing, not decoupling. To decouple you need to use Schluter DITRA. Flexbond thin set is not flexible enough (it is more "flexible" than other thin set, but it is still mortar; it has a chemistry that makes it less prone to cracking (aka "flexible") but it is not flexible enough to decouple. To decouple you need a product that lets the top surface and the bottom surface move independently (not mortar of any kind). Ditra is the product to use for decoupling. I used it two years ago and my floor tile/grout is crack free. Suggest watching Schluter videos on YouTube - they have an entire channel that is very helpful.

It is very difficult to answer a question like this without more details. I would suggest that you call Schluter Systems’ customer support line at 1-800-472-4588 to discuss a solution it greater detail.

I am use 24 x 24 porcline tiles . What is the required thickness of plywood for kitchen needed

The sub floor should be stiff. So, if the subfloor is minimum 5/8” you can lay your tile with properly installed backer board with the recommend backer screws. If you would like to use schluter products I recommend using the uncoupling membrane ditra or ditra heat if your using a heating element. The uncoupling membrane will assist in the proper defection needed for the tile. If using the ditra, don’t forget your unmodified mortar. Good luck with your project.

Can Kerdi membrane be installed over drywall painted with oil based paint?

Asked by Izzy October 19, 2019

I have only installed it over unpainted drywall. The membrane is adhered to the wall surface with tile mortar. Tile mortar, like other cements, sticks incredibly well once set. I've seen some advice to sand any oil-based painted surfaces before applying mortar. Testing a small area should confirm it. I would be concerned if the paint were peeling off the wall, or if the paint were lead-based (in that case, don't sand it!) Good luck.

Can you put the Kerdi membrane over standard drywall board? Can you mix Kerdi and Durock products?...

Yes, I have installed several showers over standard drywall using Kerdi with no leakage. The durock would be unnecessary and superfluous.

What are acceptable backer board materials this product can be applied to?

I have used it over regular drywall, not even moisture resistant, in a shower enclosure with no leakage, mold, etc. Very good product, like anything, follow installation instructions for predictable results.

Can the kerdi membrane be used over DensShield board?

All backer board must be made waterproof before the tile is applied. Most backer board manufactures recommend a "paint-on" waterproofing coating. Properly installed, Kerdi is waterproof. Schluter has several instructional videos.

Really only time will tell how well this product holds up, but being that not only is it supposed to stop water from infiltrating outside the shower wall, but it also basically holds up the entire tile installation, I have high expectations for it. Pros: - Supposed to keep water infiltration into the substrate to a minimum. - Nice grid print to help keep tiles nice and straight. Cons: - Expensive. Each roll is $119, and will only cover two walls (if shower is 36"x36"). So, you will have to buy two rolls and have very expensive waste left over. SUGGESTION: Cut any remaining membrane into five-inch wide strips and use for taping joints and corners. This will save you money by not having to buy Kerdi Band tape. - Hard to handle. It's like hanging wallpaper, except you are using mortar to bond the paper to the wall. - You should only be using Schluter unmodified thinset to stick the membrane to the substrate and the tile to the membrane. Custom Blend is garbage, and will make it impossible to file a claim with Schluter should the installation fail. Why does Home Depot not sell Schluter mortar with it's other Kerdi products? One last, if you have never installed this before, find every video that you can about installing this stuff and watch it before you even think about buying this stuff.

My husband and I are amateurs who have done a lot of DIY projects with tile. We have tried working with the Kerdi membrane twice now, and we are giving up on it. Getting the adhesive just right so the stuff will stick adequately requires more skill and patience than we have, despite our experience. We are in the middle of a shower project, and spent a frustrating, messy couple of hours yesterday to get half-way through installing the membrane, with barely 50% of it actually sticking. We are going to rip it out today and go with Red Guard instead.

I needed large patches over the Kurdi foam board but I realized later that the material is thicker than I expected. I should have ordered the tape. The membrane is strong but easy to cut. It sticks to mortar pretty well but buildup is a problem for 2in overlap requirements. May be there should be wider tape like 10 inches as an option.

When using this product use the directions and you can't fail. Kerdi will work for you as a complete waterproofing system behind your tiles. Do not worry if you get thin set on the top of the Kerdi. It will have more thinset on it when putting up your tiles. Have some fun !

Does what its supposed to. Only complaint i have is the price. Kerdi products are solid but its really hard to justify the pricing, blatantly marked up significantly compared to costs of making the product.
