Questions & Answers

Is it hard to push?

Asked by: danvan
I am a small-to-average size woman and I've had no difficulty pushing it, as long as the grass isn't too high. As others mentioned, it's a bit difficult to push through high grass.

Can you cut grass early in the morning when there is dew on the grass?

Does wet grass hurt this mower?
Asked by: marilyn
before mowing, spray blades with WD-40, gives a cleaner cut when grass is wet

Is assembly required?

Asked by: Red
Yes, but it is fairly simple to put together. Just be careful because the blades are very sharp and the blade spindle itself is kinda heavy.

Does the Scott's 14 in mower come in a wider version? My yard is medium size and could use a wider mower.

Asked by: kathleen
They make a 48 inch wide version.... you can do your lawn in half the time, but some say it's difficult to turn.

Customer Reviews

14 in. 5-Blade Manual Walk Behind Reel Mower is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 306.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good value, and no need to buy gas! I was a little skeptical about a push reel mower at first, but I like this one. I am glad I went for the smallest mower because it's easy to get under the shrubs in our yard and there's less resistance from the shorter blade. The price tag (a bit more with the one year warranty) was low enough that I was willing to risk it on my first reel mower. Do your homework before buying a reel mower! They WILL leave some tall bits of grass, and they WILL jam up on foreign objects or tall, thick grass. You could buy a more powerful mower, but with this reel mower, you're not paying for gas or electricity, and you can mow as long as you want without running out of power even if there's an oil embargo or a brownout. Assembly was a breeze, and it took about 90 minutes to mow my corner lot. This mower leaves cut grass neatly on the lawn, and it gets easier to use as it cuts. The mower's one and only drawback is that it tends to fling grass into my shoes sometimes. Perhaps if I used a grass catcher or taller shoes this would not happen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fabulous for the price! I got my mower about 3:30 today via UPS. By 5:30 I had assembled it (no tools required) and mowed 1/4 of my enormous front yard and still had time to feed dogs and a couple of other things. It is a bit difficult to get the handle over the pegs on the mower. I had to lean on it to bend it enough to make it fit (a very slight amount). As I remembered from childhood this type of mower does "lay down" tall fine grasses and requires several passes from varying angles to cut it. It does jam with every little stick or even hard dog poo. BUT it is easily unjammed and with time the sticks will mostly be cleaned up, the dog poo found and removed and I won't be mowing tall fine grasses since I will be able to keep it cut now. This type of mower is not for the impatient person but it is working great for me and is within my budget. I'll be mowing most of 1.2 acres with it a little each day. I'm a senior with back problems and I LOVE this mower!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from !wow! turn it around and it cuts long grass! My grass was really high (like 1o inches!) and this little guy cut it---heres the secret though---turn the handle to the opposite side---so the black roll bar is in front and PULLl it BACKWARDS---then it cuts high grass in a couple passes without getting clogged at all!! (trying to cut high grass pushing it takes awhile as it was getting clogged every minute) Its not an electric or gas powered mower, it takes longer, and takes a couple passes, but, awesome price, and no carbon footprint and you don't have to go to the gym! Now that my yard is short it will be easy to keep up with this fun tool.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from some advice to consider If you haven't mowed with a canister reel mower this 14" may or may not be the right product for you. It is good for: --small yards --yards that are low maintenance, aka not ones that are over-fertilized and weed-treated and seeded --owners who will take care of their machines --owners who will mow regularly during the summer season when grass grows quick --owners who are convicted to not contribute to global warming while they mow and so therefore will keep mowing even when the mowing gets tough You need to clear the yard of little sticks, otherwise they block the blades. You need to sweep clean and oil your machine after EACH USE otherwise it will be unhappy and squeak. You can't let the grass go to seed because the mower will NOT CUT the flowering stalks. The 14" is not a magic machine, but it does a good job if you learn how to best use it and use it often. I recently moved to a house with an .75 acre lawn that was (by previous owners, not myself) chemically treated to be a thick, lush, grass mat and the 14" Scotts was just not up to snuff. I have had to upgrade to an 18" industrial model from Fiskar.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible cut This mower doesn't cut all of the grass in it's swath, some clippings come up, but even after going over the same areas over, and over, long blades were leftover. Weeds, forget it, even thin stemmed weeds just layover, and then pop back up. My yard is not perfect, I have weeds here, and there, but I can't imagine this mower cutting even the most level, pristine grass of any kind. I am going through the pain in the neck of boxing it up, and taking it back after this review. I hope you don't have to go through the waste of time that I did. I was so looking forward to not having a gas powered mower to deal with, gas, oil, spark plugs, and mechanical breakdowns. I have two gas powered self propelled mowers sitting in my garage with mech. problems, and I can't find a repairman to look at them! Frustrating, the throw away junk that is made these days. One mower is a Craftsman, and the other a Toro. Bottom line is that this reel mower is not a solution to anything. The search goes on.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I received my mower. I liked it but it cuts... I received my mower. I liked it but it cuts too low for my lawn, I didn't attempt to raise it up because it was too hard and I still prefer a lawn between 2-3 inches. The 14" doesn't really handle my needs. My intention is to return it and get the 20" mower.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This works better than I imagined. I wish I could... This works better than I imagined. I wish I could mow my 4 acres with it but that’s not going to happen but it’s a great way to get in shape. Cuts the grass very short, I love it. It’s excellent to use for those hard to get areas.

You have to do due diligence before mowing and remove those hindrances but after that it cuts like butter.
