Yes you can use it on top. I seeded the bare spot and put the thin layer of lawn soil over it. Of course some of the soil was on top of the already grown grass.

I have a lot of weeds so I am using raised garden beds on top of barrier weed control fabric. What kind of soil/potting mix etc I should be using to grow vegetable and/or flowers in those beds. I am totally new to the gardening, any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Total area of the bed is 96 sq. ft. and height of the bed is 11”.
Asked by: AshJan
Scotts Turf Builder 1.5 cu. ft. Lawn Soil is formulated for grass and would not be ideal for vegetables and flowers. A product like Miracle-Gro Nature's Care 1.5 cu. ft. Raised Bed Soil would be a better match. The question is what are you filing the garden bed with? The bed you describe would take 3 cubic yards of fill. I assume you have regular dirt/soil to start the base layer, otherwise you are looking at about 70 1.5 cubic foot bags of material to totally fill your bed. The barrier weed control fabric is not ideal on the bottom of raised gardens. If you place it at the bottom it might interfere with the roots of the plants you are growing. Its normally used on top of the soil in landscaped areas where it is covered in a layer of rocks or mulch. Very few weed seeds will grow up through 11 inches of dirt to germinate. If its already in, that's fine, but consider using mulch, newspaper or cardboard on the top to prevent germination of blown in weed/seeds. One of the benefits of a raised bed is that there is less weed seed blown in or thrown from a lawnmower from nearby grass. I used soil and material from my compost pile to fill my bed, but I don't know what is available to you

That is what I do every year, it works well. Keep in mind you will need to rake it.

First off, I was leery after reading the reviews about foreign objects in the product. I found it in my local store and felt the material through the plastic bag and it felt ok. I wished there had been a clear plastic view window on the packaging to give me a better "preview" of what I was buying. I need it to "fix" a lawn area that had been seeded by someone else. The seed had just been scattered on top of hard ground without breaking the surface up or raking the seeds in. I used four bags, roughly 120 lbs and hand spread it it. I mean that literally, my hand was every bit of the soil. I used a large plastic colander to spread it evenly in some areas. In all 4 bags I found 2 pea size pieces of something hard maybe gravel and 3 small pieces of wood chips. The wood chips were no bigger than a wood chisel shaving and broke up under finger pressure. I thought it worked very well and got excellent results especially considering the fact no surface soil prep had been done.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor Quality Control Having bought cheaper soil at Home Depot, I thought I would spend the money for a better name and a better product.. My thoughts were wrong! I bought four bags and returned three of them. After opening the first bag, I sifted it through a screen and ended up with 15 lbs. of stones, twigs and bark. If the bag weighs 60 - 75 lbs,, that's 20 - 25% of unusable product. I can't think of any other product where a company takes pride in selling something so bad! Thank goodness they don't sell cars! Congratulations on buying your new car...80% of it works, but you can't use the radio, AC, cruise control and power windows. In all of the other poor reviews of this product, Scotts has a response about how sorry it is and that it takes pride in its products and here's how you can contact them. How about screening the soil before you put it in the bag and sell the customer something a lot close to 100% of what they are buying instead a bag with stones and twigs! Scotts, please do me the courtesy and do not reply with your rubber stamped response!

There really ought to be a regulation regarding the use of the word "soil". This is yet one more Scotts product not worth the plastic bag it comes in. If you like rocks the size of walnuts, bark/wood pieces up to 2" wide by 6" long, twigs, assorted pieces of plastic, wire, gravel and a little peat moss, all of which are supposedly forest products that may have been "composted" ( maybe overnight), then you'll love this premium priced product. In fact the cheapest "top soil" that Home Depot carries is somewhat better. The same negative review also applies to Turf Builder Triple Action. It is supposed to help fertilize, kill weeds and, prevent crabgrass as an all-in-one product. In reality, it does none of those things very well. My lawn did much better on the less expensive single function Vigoro products.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Made the bare spot overseed I did POP Used this along with Scotts grass seed and it was excellent! Filled in a bare spot in the lawn with nice thick grass and seems to hold the moisture in for the seed to take hold quickly. Very good soil product. Unfortunately, I must agree with the majority of the other customers who made the mistake of purchasing this product. Regretfully I bought 12 bags of the product as I had numerous areas to either fill or top fill due to a very difficult winter in the northeast. The product mixture was predominately twig fragments, along with other foreign material including a broken up white plastic spoon and other unidentifiable material. The amount of "soil" was a fraction of the total bag content which was also impregnated with the small twigs. Very dissatisfied, however due to the weight of the bags, I decided not to further damage my spine and back muscles with a hopeless situation. As a 25 + year Home Depot customer, I would assume that they would discontinue selling this Scotts product throughout their stores !!!

I went to HD to get some peat moss but they didn't have any, and I saw this product. The bag sure advertises a great "your lawn will be AWESOME" products. Not the case. I normally take negative reviews with a grain of salt, but the negative reviews of this product are spot on. This is NOT "Lawn Soil"... this is "Mulch with some junk in it". I could not believe how much wood was in each bag. I really should have stopped as soon as I opened the first bag, but I wanted to get my overseeding done so I used 4 bags for my back lawn. It looks like I mulched it... really. I will have to see if the seed actually grows, but overall I would absolutely NOT recommend this product. Scotts should be ashamed. And of course if my seed doesn't grow, I'm sure neither HD or Scotts will replace that.

Technically, a top soil load would have been a little cheaper .... BUT .... the soil is not as high quality as this, (i.e. rocks in load of top soil). Two other big advantages .... I saved my back by avoiding a shovel and wheel barrow method ... and spreading was as simple as spreading out 30 lb bags. Very easy and efficient ... no back breaking work here.

I added grass seed and in about two weeks the seed started to come up. The old grass also poked through the new soil and was very green. Well after about 4 weeks I mowed it for the first time and the grass looked great. I would buy it again.
