Q:Can I use this when I overseed with Scott’s seed that has fertilizer in it

      Answer This Question

A:  You can but I wouldn't. This isn't soil, it's mulch with large chunks of wood and other junk throughout. I seeded in this and then topdressed with more of it and the chunks just smothered the seed for the entire area is sparse. I do NOT recommend this.

A:  Scotts Turf Builder Lawn Soil can be used to lightly cover Scotts grass seed after planting no more than 1/4 inch.

Rocks and Wood Chips in Very Expensive LawnSoil
I purchased 40 bags of the Scott's LawnSoil to repair an area of my lawn that had some excavation work. I spread the bags, limed the soil, used Scott's Starter Fertilizer and seeded. A few weeks later I had bare spots and saw pieces of wood and stones throughout the newly seeded area. All of this was mixed in with the Scott's Lawn Soil. I bought two additional bags and actually sifted the rocks and wood pieces out. They represented an estimated 15-20% of each bag - yes rocks and wood chips. I would like to upload pictures of the lawn and of me sifting a new bag of the LawnSoil. The Optional button to add photos does not work.

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Scotts Turf Builder Enriched Lawn Soil and appreciate your feedback. This is not the quality of product we intend to produce. Every effort is made to screen out debris. It is possible that the screens were damaged and not noticed, allowing some debris into the bagged product. Most of our soils, especially potting mixes and garden soils, are made of composted forest products and contain very little if any actual soil. Composted forest products provide high organic content and nutrients without the concern for soil compaction which often occurs with potting mixes composed primarily of actual topsoil. The coarser material allows for air to reach the roots of the plant which improves plant performance. While small pieces of bark and twigs are intentional components of our growing media, including potting soil, garden soil, lawn soil, topsoil, etc., you should not find large pieces of wood or bark. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers. At your earliest convenience, please reach out to us at 888-270-3714 if we can further assist.
Lots if filler, large wood pieces
Soil seemed ok, do not use this for overseeding or topdressing, as there are TONS of large wood pieces. Not very happy as it says soil on the bag, not mulch - not sure why anyone would want that much wood in their yard.

It keeps my new grass sprigs moist even under the harsh sun. I'm not sure if they would have survived without a mulch, plus this contains a fertilizer designed for new growth. I keep going back for more as I continue to fill in bare spots with new St Augustine grass.

Terrible. Sticks, wood chips. Mushrooms growing
Used 10 bags of this to reseed an area. It is full of wood chips and sticks as big as my thumb. Grass seed doesn't grow too well in this junk. And bonus: a new crazy kind of mushroom is growing in the grass-free stick areas. I've never seen this fungus before in my yard. I thought I was buying a premium product, but I am very disappointed. I'm going to have to rake out the sticks and use something else and try growing grass again in the bare spots. Will be asking for a refund.

It just takes the right conditions for the spores to develop into a fungus or mold. Fungus mold have been scientifically proven to improve the growth of plants by releasing nutrients from the organic material that growing media are typically. Fungus mold only becomes a problem if there is an overgrowth, which occurs when the soil is too wet. The mold and fungus that grows on soils and mulch will not harm plants and is safe for people and pets to be around. Mold and fungus on growing media or mulch will go away with sunlight and air circulation. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers. Poor product
Terrible product. I bought 30bags of these from Oshawa Homedepot for my lawn. It brought more weeds to my lawn than the grass. I guess no weed guarantee is just a promotional spot on the packets rather actual promise. Please don’t waste your money buying this product

                        Love this stuff!
Best $11 you will spend if you want grass quickly. I am a chick who knows NOTHING about lawn care. Between not watering, mowing too short etc I destroyed my front yard lawn. This stuff is great! I took a hand rake, dug up the spots. I put down about an inch of this product then put down seed, mixed it lightly and covered the the top with a thin layer. In two weeks in blazing hot sun I have grass! I only watered in the evening, but I did it everyday as directed. My neighbor kept saying you need straw....NOPE! I really believe it you follow the directions you will have success. First pic is day one, second pic a week later and I dug up more spots. Last pic is 2 weeks later. I still have more work to do...weed killer etc. but I love this stuff.

                            This is Lawn "Mud"--not soil
This product should be called "Lawn Mud". The contents of the bag was soaked in water and totally useless until I spread it out in my wheelbarrow and let it dry out for several days. I know Scott's will claim they can't control how retailers cover their products from the elements, but there is NO WAY that amount of moisture leaked into the bag--the soil was soaking wet when it was placed in the bag. When I cleaned out my wheelbarrow, I noticed the fine black dust that remained. I think Scott's is putting coal dust in this "soil" to make it appear blacker than it actually is. I had to use Lava soap to remove the black dust--it was NOT soil. I have given up on buying this product--it is not as advertised and very difficult to work with. I would include photos showing how it came out of the bag and the coal dust I mentioned, but there's no link on the review webpage that lets me do that. ?????

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Scotts Turf Builder LawnSoil and appreciate your feedback, which will be shared with the appropriate department. Any moisture that gets in the product will make the granules lump together. Our packaging does include small, almost-imperceptible air holes for the product to breathe in storage, so mishandling can lead to moisture entry through these vents. If the product is stored in high heat or humidity or gets rained on, this can happen. Another possible cause is the product being stored on a concrete or cement floor or leaning against a wall made of either material. Concrete/cement draws moisture and can increase the chance of moisture getting in the bag. When purchasing the product in person, be sure to inspect the bags for signs of rips or other damage. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers. At your earliest convenience, please reach out to us at 888-270-3714 if we can further assist.

Hope you enjoy rocks, trash, and tree branches in these. Spent $50 on bags to get a horribly screened product. Can't wait to ruin my bed knives or reels when I mow again
