how do you remove screen to paint door

will screen go back in if I remove the spline?
Asked by: tpf
I'm curious too as to how to paint this door without removing the screen. I understand the paint guard to keep the paint off the screen buy HOW do you paint the inside parts of the door? There is no room to get a brush between the wood and the screen.

Can I put clear coat waterproofing on this door?
Asked by: Scruffy
You can put a clear finish and stain on it however the material the door is made of is more suitable for a painted finish. The doors frame is made out of multiple scrap pieces which are jointed together with glue. If it's not sealed properly moisture can cause the joints to separate. Otherwise with a proper sealant it should last just as long as lumber made from a single piece.

How to remove screen before painting

Asked by: Heather
You have to remove the spline but from what I've been told the screen is so perfectly cut that there is no way to get it back in. I just bought this same door and am removing the screen to prime and paint it. I'm just going to buy new screen that I can trim myself once I reinstall it.

The wood goes to the outside and the screen to the inside.

I looked at it in the store and after three I found one I thought was better but it didn't fit in my car, so I ordered it online for my contractor to pick up for me. He pointed out to the Home Depot staff that the screen was ripped, but it was not a big deal to me because I had to remove the screen to paint the door. That is when I noticed all the flaws. Huge gap between the horizontal rail and the vertical frame; a chunk was chipped out and someone filled it poorly with wood putty; a number of other dings that required remediation. Since I was painting (white stain actually) I wasn't overly concerned about the flaws, but if I had picked the door out, I would have looked for the best one. The Home Depot staff obviously did not have this attitude or maybe this was the best one. The door was inexpensive ($30) and I added decorative corner pieces ($180). I bought the corner pieces online because Home Depot stopped stocking them.

Porch Project: Worked like a champ, would recommend Varnishing the frame to stop the bug from Destroying/eating the wood before you screw it to the frame work, also make sure hinges and hinge posts are Dead level or the opposite of the "Door" will Drag on the Ground, if this happens, you can add a small "foot-wheel" to the bottom on the inside of the door, where the door rubs on the ground to give it that extra lift it needs, I would also install 3 hinges for better support placement Should be :Near Top :Center :and near bottom... for better support.

Bought this door to replace a 'classic screen door' that had seen its best days. That one lasted about ten years despite being quite flimsy. This one is better designed and made. I expect it to last another 10 years. It was easy to install, but it came with no accessories. You will need hinges, latch, spring and handles. All that junk cost about as much as the door. Do not expect perfection for $30, just good enuf.

The pieces which made up this door were cut with a dull blade leaving a mess. The pieces did not fill together well. There were large globs of glue where they shouldn't be including on the screen making it impossible to remove and reuse the screen. It took a lot of scraping, wood filler, sanding and replacement screen to make it work.

I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the door I received since I bought it sight unseen. It was square, solidly built and of good materials. The one weak link I found was that, in order to apply finish to the door, you have to remove the spline and screen. Easy! Getting it back in nice and tight after the finish has been applied - nearly impossible! The manufacturer installed the screen like anyone would by using a piece larger than needed, rolling the screen into the groove in the door and installing the spline while pulling the screen tight, and then trimming off the extra screen. This last step is what makes reinstalling it so difficult. There is nothing to hold on to in order to get it straight and tight. Wish they sold this with the screen and spline in a bag not installed and let me put it in after I finish the door and let me do the trimming.

The plastic tubing holding the screen started to come off almost immediately. The screening was frayed in some areas. After paying a lot of money to a handyman to install the doors I couldn't have him take them down and return them. He stapled the screening in. You get what you pay for!
