Terrible Product, Utter Trash
Bought this safe to store important things (legal documents, jewelry, miscellaneous valuables). It opened fine right out of the box, locking mechanism works (still works). However, after two uses, the handle mechanism has failed and I can’t even open the box anymore. So, half my documents and valuables are in the box and half are not. I will have to transport the remaining things in a different container, figure out how to open the original safe at my final destination, and buy a new safe. Waste of time and money. Contacted SentrySafe customer service. No response. I might as well have bought a Tupperware container and spray painted it black. Save yourself the hassle and get something else.

Apparently did not make it to the store without being broken. Box looks fine, but the concrete in the plastic is cracked and the plastic outside is cracked in several places. It is going back. Next time I buy something like this in a store I will open it before loading. I didn't want to buy online and have delivered as there are a lot of bad stories about arriving broken, sometimes multiple times when the product is replaced. Otherwise left in place, this may very well serve its intended purpose.

This safe solves a number of problems that I'd bet exist in most homes. It provides a place where you can safely store important papers like insurance policies, medical records, deeds, etc. In the event of a fire, it offers up to 30 minutes of protection from 1550 degrees F of heat and up to 72 hours of protection from flood damage. One other major benefit to me is that I can now place a backup of my computer information inside it on DVDs and not have to worry in the event of a fire. Since I have so many important things on my computer, that one thing more than covers the cost of the safe! By the way, if I were so inclined, I could grab it and take it with me since it only weighs 43 lbs. and has handles on both sides. I've attached a picture so you can get an idea of the size and see that it will hold hanging folders, which makes it very convenient to locate just the items I want to change, when the time comes. This isn't a safe to store watches, firearms, stamps, pearls, etc. in because the humidity that gets trapped inside can damage them. If you have an airtight container that's vacuum sealed, you may be able to place some items inside but since this safe can be carried away, I'd recommend storing those items elsewhere. If you decide to get one, you'll need to get a 9 volt alkaline battery. I plan to get one of the new, extended life batteries that last 10 years, so I don't have to worry about this for a long time. You also need to know that to reset your combination, the instructions tell you to press the reset button but to do that, you'll need a paper clip or something narrow to insert in a hole on top of the safe - which makes sense to me since I don't want to make it easy for someone to figure out how to easily open it! I hope that this was helpful to you.

The safe is very heavy, about 45 lbs, made extremely well, sturdy, and durable. It is water resistant and fireproof but not sure how effective/strong the lock hook is against theft. Standard hanging file folders fit perfectly with no problem closing the lid. Time will tell how long and well the digital components, digital lock, and keypad will last. I did not give more stars because of the difficulty I had to open the battery cover and to input new personal code. The instructions are vague and incorrect. What seemed like easy instructions at a glance, became a challenge, and I am a very technically savvy, do it your-selfer so I was not the issue here. You first have to open the battery cover to install a 9V battery, not included. The instructions say to insert a credit card type card into the middle slot to release the battery cover, it is supposed to attach to the card when you pull/remove the card. NOT! I figured out you insert the card which is met with greater resistance than it should be, the cover did not attach to the card so I could not get the door removed. I finally used a metal probe with a hook, I inserted the card, then removed card, then inserted the probe, pulled it hard to the right to remove the door. DIFFICULT! They certainly could have made a better/easier method to open the cover. Screws would be so much easier! Then, to set your personal code, it states to push and hold the reset button above the keypad until the green light appears..thing is,,,,there is nothing to press, there is only a small hole there. After several attempts, and red lights/failure, I finally found a small crochet hook that worked. I inserted it into the hole, pushing in about 3 seconds until I got the green light and a beep. I was then able to input my code. If you have issues you can call Customer Service 1-800-828-1438. Or www.sentrysafe.com. I recommend this product with caution!

Hello. Thank you for your feedback regarding this product. The 9V battery can be changed externally by removing the compartment cover. For best results, insert the card into the middle slot and gently wiggle until you feel the spring loaded tension release. If the cover does not come off on the card, then you should be able to remove it with your fingers. The reset button is located in a small hole just above the keypad and under the lid. We recommend using a paperclip or other similar object to reach and press the reset button. The button is in this location to reduce the possibility of inadvertent combination reset. For additional assistance regarding how to operate this product please contact SentrySafe at 1-800-828-1438

Why did I get this? Sentry FIRE RESISTANT AND WATERPROOF (unit or chest as the manual calls it) not a safe. I just went through Hurricane Harvey, I had some damage to my home which included water in my kitchen and dinning room, (the bottom of my cabinets have all turned to dust) I lost a tree, lots of downed fence, etc. and I was lucky, some lost everything, I do mean everything just piles of sticks thrown all over. It is at times like that you think what do I want to save and how am I going to do that. Note: I put a bunch of stuff in the trunk of my car which was in the garage, I figured that was the safest place if my home collapsed, at least I would know where to look. Yes I thought my home would fall down on my head, so much so I got into a center bathroom with my two small dogs, we climbed into the tub during the worst of the storm, I had made a scaffolding out of two ladders next to the tub hoping that would help to keep the roof off us. I was looking forward to getting this safe, I thought I would be able to put some valuables such as flash backup drive, DVD with photos and other items for safe keeping but when I looked at the directions they made me sad. Page 2 of the Owners Manual starts off by calling it a waterproof, and fireproof chest, (you will understand in a moment, NOTE not exactly word for word I just hit the highlights, I will attach a photo of the actual page). Gun warning ... Items such as firearms, other weapons, ... medications should not be stored in this unit. (Observational note; it is made of plastic and some kind of concrete? so easy to break into) DO NOT store delicate items such as jewelry, (they go on) we recommend putting them in an air-tight container first, to protect them from the high moisture content in the units insulation. (they use the example of a watch, you need to place it in an airtight container or the high moisture will stop it from working). NOTE... the high moisture (interior humidity) is intended to act as part of the fire protection, the waterproof seal keeps the humidity in and flood water out. DO NOT store pearls ... they will be damaged in a fire as the unit only protects up to a interior temperature of 350 degrees. (Translation it is going to get really hot in there in the case of a fire) DO NOT store computer disk, audio-visual cassettes or photo negatives (remember if you put pictures in the unit place them in something that is air-tight to protect them from the high internal moisture content). Now on to what I discovered when I tried to open it, "not so easy", there is a trick I discovered searching the Internet. to open put in the combination of numbers on the number pad, (the default is on the last page of the owners manual) wait for a whir and click next PUSH down on the top, finally push up on the handle (located in the front top recessed into the top) as closely to the right side as possible, but be careful how much pressure you use as the number one complaint is this handle breaks easily. Why? it is the waterproofing seal, and a not so great handle design. PRO it is very easy to set the combination, you open it using the trick above, remember the factory number to open the unit is on the back page of the owners manual, once open there is a tiny reset button (your going to need a paper clip) press this recessed reset button with the paper clip and the green light will flash, punch in your new number 4 or 6 digits, wait a second, then try using it BEFORE YOU CLOSE the unit, try the new combination a couple of times listen for the whir and click, you have set your own unique-ish new number only known to you. It is heavy and a decent size, a couple of reams of letter size paper would fit into it. It has two handy handles molded into the side to pick it up. Now I am trying to figure out what to do with it since EVERYTHING I wanted to put in it the owners manual says DON'T.

This is an excellent 0.66 cubic feet fire resistant and waterproof file safe by SentrySafe, a division of Master Lock. Upon delivery my wife and I were immediately impressed with its heavy duty construction. The unit weighs in at about 45 pounds. The safe comes with a electronic keypad for entering the combination. The unit is powered by a 9-volt battery you must supply. After inserting the battery and typing in the factory combination we tried to lift the lid without success. We could hear the locking mechanism working but could still not lift the lid. You only have four seconds to lift the lid before the safe relocks. Per the owner's manual we were applying strong downward force on the lid while unlocking, but to no avail. So we placed a call to SentrySafe's Customer Service. Their customer service desk is U.S. based so the call was immediately answered by an individual who spoke excellent English. I described our problem and the service representative quickly explained that new safes are sometimes difficult to open at first because their gaskets/seals are so tight. The rep told me to have my wife sit on the lid of the safe while I put in the combination and lifted the latch. The rep said she would stay on the telephone line while I completed this action. The lid opened immediately. The rep informed us the lid would become easier to open over time. We both thanked her for the help and excellent customer service. The 0.66 cubic feet of space within the safe provides a large amount of storage for valuable papers and possessions. See attached photographs. Well done SentrySafe!

      Nice Safe...Cheap Parts
I loved this safe until it locked me out access to my contents inside. The safe is very will built accept for one important piece, the button that engages the locking mechanism to open the safe. The button is very flimsy and cheaply made. I felt this way since the day I bought it, but against my better judgment I trusted the product and now I can't gain access to my important contents inside the safe. The lock still works properly, but the button does not engage the lock to open the safe, it just wobbles up and down. I contacted sentry safe customer service directly, but because I have had the safe for over a year it is no longer under warranty and I was advised to contact a locksmith at my own expense. Again, the lock works fine, it is simply the cheapest, but most important piece on the safe thats broken. I am very disappointed in sentry safe's customer service and I would have hoped for better results. Sentry safe aka Masterlock has lost a customer for life.

Security for your important documents from fire and water
This safe is just what I was needing for securing my important documents from fire and water damage. It's just the right size for storing my will, medical power of attorney, insurance policies, passport, birth certificate and other vital papers. You can hang letter size folders in it, just like any other file cabinet, to help organize things. Though it only measures about 14"x17"x14", it is quite heavy and not very mobile, so you'll want to leave it in one place. We put ours in the bedroom closet on the floor where it's easily accessible. You won't be able to put it up high because it's too heavy to be moving it up and down every time you want to get in it. We're not so worried about theft protection, but it does have a locking lid that limits access and its weight restricts its mobility. If I didn't know the price, I would think it was at least $30 or $40 more. It's a great value and serves a vital storage need.

        Protect your Important Files!
This is a very good quality product to protect your important files. It is a solid, well built & sturdy file safe. It is fire resistant and water proof, but may not be the most secure place to store things if security is your priority. I cannot comment on the technical aspect and performance in case of fire or flood, but this safe is tested & certified to meet certain conditions that I'm sure would be suitable for most residential fire & flood disasters. What I can tell from a visual inspection is that the safe appears to made of high quality materials, well insulated, has thick walls, and well sealed. It has a capacity of 0.66 cubic feet and the dimensions from inside are approx. 12x8x9 and from the outside it is approx. 17x14x14. It weights over 40 lbs (i.e. Heavy!). You can use hanging folders (see pic) or other similar sized files for 8.5x11 letter size paper. The lock is not the strongest (remember this is not a valuable items safe). You can see the latch in the pictures (not very strong). It comes with 2 standard keys. It includes instructions on how to use (which is straight forward) and what you should not store in the safe (ex. pearls, weapons, medication) so make sure you read the instructions! The opening handle is easy to use and conveniently located. It also has two useful lifting handles on the sides although the handles are not really deep to get a good grip. My only question is whether this safe will unnecessarily attract a thief's attention and you end up losing all your important files! Now I need to look up other Sentry products for storing valuable items! Recommended!
