Would this connector reduce my water flow to a shower or to my kitchen sink? the diameter seems much smaller

Asked by: wayne
reduce compared with? It is less volume than 1/2 inch copper, but for a shower or sink I do not think you will notice anything. If it were feeding multiple showers and sinks I would say move up to 3/4" to keep the volume available, pressure would be the same either way.

What is the PEX-A pipe and fittings used for, and what are the differences between it and the regular PEX system? Also, is it safe to use the crimp tools and bands with the plastic PEX fittings?
Asked by: Shoezel
Pex A (like Uponor Pex) is superior to Pex B. Pex A ring seals, using an expansion tool (I recommend the Dewalt or Milwaukee Pex expansion tools) for the Pex A pipe ends actually tighten over time and since they're made of non-metallic material can be buried. Pex A is also much more "bendable" than Pex B and not as stiff. However, it is more expensive than Pex B as well. These plastic fittings will work fine on Pex A or Pex B with metal rings and of course a crimp tool. (You CANNOT use the Pex A expansion ring fittings on Pex B). I used the stainless steal bands on my Pex B with these plastic fittings and they work fine, no leaks. Also, these plastic fittings and Sharbite's work fine on both Pex A and Pex B. The downside of these fittings to me is that they greatly reduce the inside diameter of your water line so I would use them only at or very near your fixtures to avoid downstream reduced flow issues.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from beat the high price of aquarium parts I find these plastic fittings are perfect for aquarium use, where you want no metal. These fit up nicely with the 12mm silicone tubing of my filters, and allow all sorts of useful configurations to be inexpensively assembled in combination with the standard filter fittings and 1/2" PEX tubing. Attached is a picture of one such invention. The inline Tee allows me to get double-duty from a single external filter - both drawing water directly through the side-mounted strainer, and through the 'under-gravel' plate. The tee in the picture is not actually a PEX part, but a hose fitting that I modified to fit. The PEX part would have fit with no modification if I had had one at the time. These fittings are solidly made and smoothly finished, and are rated for real plumbing use. It is a very hard sort of plastic that is designed for crimping, although I would still prefer brass for this sort of use.

Got these connectors to use in running a new water line to an outside hose bib. I hadn't worked with PEX pipe before but given the location in a crawlspace it's characteristics (better freeze/burst protection, no need for glue, flexibility, etc.) it seemed to be a good choice. Working with the material was easy. I joined the PEX to the existing copper pipe by sweating on a tee to which I had already fused a PEX adapter. You could also use a snap-fit tee connector to accomplish this if you're not comfortable with soldering. The rest was simple. The PEX attaches easily to the adapter and these push-on elbows, secured with cinch clamps, make each connection fast and leak-free. I've done a lot of plumbing over the years, mostly copper and PVC, but I found PEX to be much easier and faster to work with. It will definitely be my choice for future projects.

This fitting requires the bands and band crimping tool in order to work properly and not leak. If you are using Pex A, the Pex A end expansion tool and special Pex A sealing rings will also work. I used a few of them in my barndominium remodel on Pex B and although they do not leak when properly crimped , they do greatly reduce the inside pipe diameter much more than the brass fittings. I recommend only using them well downstream of your main water supply so that your water flow rate is minimally effected. These are superior to metal fittings if corrosion is an issue with your water because these will never corrode.

The SharkBite PEX Plastic Barb Elbow (5-Pack) is the most economical choice for a small plumbing job. It provides enough elbows without the worry that you will have to go back to the store because you are one short. One thing to note and that is the SharkBite brand supports their products they provide installation instructions on the package and you can visit SharkBite.com if you need more help. I also find the people at Home Depot are very knowledgeable and always there to answer questions.

I plan to use the elbows in the spring for the drip system. I’m sure by then some of the elbows in the yard will need replacing. There are 5 per package and each has threaded ends for the hose attachment. I like this type of elbow because once the hose is attached, it is almost impossible to remove. This prevents the water pressure from disconnecting them. The black plastic will prevent corrosion and water damage.
