About This Product

SharkBite Max flexible water heater connectors are the fastest and easiest way to connect your water heater to existing pipes in your home. A newly designed stainless steel collet retainer delivers additional strength and durability and provides a 200 psi pressure rating. SharkBite Max connectors do not require a PEX tube liner, and a re-engineered body allows you to insert the pipe using less force and greater ease. No soldering, clamps, unions, glue, or special tools required. After inserting to pipe, stainless steel teeth bite down and grip the pipe tightly while a specially formulated O-ring compresses around the pipe to create a watertight seal. The durable corrugated stainless-steel hose is a great option for areas that require hard piping but is still flexible enough to connect to water lines in tight spaces that don't line up. Available in additional lengths (12 in. to 24 in.) and with integrated ball valve shut off.

Any problems with black greasy/rubber debris coming from this connector as with the Braided Stainless Steel Water Heater Connector (also from SharkBite)?

        Answer This Question

I have had no problem with any debris coming through the water lines. I read about folks having problems with the other kind, which is why I bought this one. When I received it I looked inside before installing and all I could see was metal - no liner to disintegrate.

I tried several types of tank connectors. Copper, brass, braided and stainless hoses/tubes. Many of them were showing signs of early failure. The 3/4 in. Push-to-Connect x 3/4 in. FIP x 18 in. Corrugated Stainless Steel Water Heater Connector is the one I have chosen to stay with on several units we have rebuilt. It don't have the corrosion build up like the copper and brass connector or the rubber inner hose that breaks down. I really like Shark Bites....fast easy and they come apart.

I installed one of these on the hot water outlet of my new water heater. All went well with the initial installation. One week later I checked the connections and found the 3/4" NPT leaking (created quite a mess). Once isolated and removed, I found the rubber seal crimped and damaged. I purchased a new one, and installed; so far so good. Several questions: How could I have damaged the seal, and why would it last a week before leaking? and, Do you need pipe dope on the male connection on the water heater where it is being installed?

              Answer This Question

The o-ring could have been damaged if the pipe you installed was not de-burred and had a sharp edge. As far as why it didn't leak immediately, it could have been due to the pressure. We do recommend using Teflon tape on all threaded applications. If you have further questions, please contact our Customer Service M-F, 8am-5pm at (877) 700-4242.

The rubber washer was over torqued. Its not a head bolt on a big block Pontiac. Try not to over tighten them. Only use enough force to stop seepage. Then keep an eye on it. You can always tighten a bit if you notice moisture. I always wrap my threads with teflon tape. It can help with seepage....but really makes it easier to get apart years later.

SharkBite Products are approved in the National Plumbing Code. You would need to contact your local inspector to see if there is any variations in your specific location. Municipalities codes can vary off of the national code.

Fool me twice, shame on me
There's a reason these are now in the clearance section for five bucks. Second one developed a pinhole leak in the exact spot below the push-to-connect fitting after starting to corrode at just about the one-year mark. Utter garbage. On the bright side, it gave me the opportunity to drain down the tank again to flush it out like you're supposed to at least once a year.

Easy to install but DOESN'T LAST
The installation process was pretty simple: just cut the pipe, use the deburring tool to clean the edge and mark it, and make sure the cut is square and clean. The Shark Bite connection slipped right on with no trouble, and I was done very quickly. A few months later when I noticed the pipe hot water connection (only the hot) was dripping from just under the connection. Now I know why plumbers don't use these. Try a compression fitting instead. Warranty is worthless as well.

                          works
Replaced (2) braided connectors with the corrugated option (as the rubber inside the braided line was degraded leaving bits of rubber in the water). Easy fix, no leaks and no issues with the washer (used a little food safe lube so the washer would not bind). Corrugated SS looks to be a much better option - avoid the braided option

                            Works great upon install
I chose this over the braided hose of the same size and connectors for two reasons. This seemed more pliable and held its shape so as not to put any stress on the piping it connects to. The other reason is there are plenty of stories of the rubber hoses breaking down over time and causing tiny oily specs in faucets and tubs. So far upon install everything works well. Only time will tell if the product ends up corroding.

                              Poor quality
Installed a new water heater less than a year ago. Heard great things about this product and decided try them out. I am now replacing my third shark bite in less than a year due to corrosion and leaking. Not to mention my new cabinets now have water damage directly caused by this product. Pour quality product. I wouldn't recommend.

Good lord that was easy, kind of like cheating when I have always sweated copper! I went from New 80 Gal Rheem heat pump water heater to copper pipe. Hasn't leaked and I hope it doesn't! Don't forget to pull out the plastic insert if you are snapping it to copper pipe.
