The notch on the item is referred to as a "speed prong" which helps hold the item in place during installation by hammering it into the wood member. The A35 is rated with either 8dx1 1/2" nails or the SD9112 structural connector screw. In some loading conditions the nail capacity is higher and in others the screw capacity is higher; please see our website for details.
