The ABA series is not rated for this application, but the ABU series is. Please scroll down to the "Allowable Loads - Beam Installation" for the approved models and complete information: https://www.strongtie.com/retrofitpostbases_postbases/aba-abu-abw_productgroup_wcc/p/aba.abu.abw#LoadTables. You need a 5/8" bolt. I usually use their 5/8 x 3 1/2 wedge-all anchors

It would depend on the demand load. The ABA66RZ has an uplift capacity of 850 lbs. and a download capacity of 11,465 lbs. There are no bolt holes on the ABA66RZ. Please note that post bases do not provide adequate resistance to prevent members from rotating about the base and therefore are not recommended for non-top-supported installations (such as fences or unbraced carports). Thank you!

Answer

The ABA44RZ requires a 1/2 diameter anchor. The anchor bolt type, length and embedment is specified by the Designer/Engineer of Record. The drill bit size will depend on the anchor type used. Thank you!

what's the difference between ABA44RZ and 44RZ. H.D. site says they're both for 4x4 posts.

Asked by alpinetim February 16, 2019

Answer

ABA44RZ is 4 inch wide while ABA44Z is 3.5 inch wide (nominal 4"). If your post lumber is 4x4 (nominal, actual size is around 3.5"x3.5"), you better use ABA44Z.

Can this be used in a horizontal application. 4x4 for skids for a shed

Asked by CM September 18, 2018

Answer

The ABA bases have not been evaluated for a horizontal application, but please see the L-C-ABUEBEAM17 engineering letter on our website for information on the ABU supporting a horizontal beam. Thank you!

how adjustable is it? what is the maximum post dimension that can fit within it?

Answers

Most 4x4 posts are in actual size 3.5"x3.5", less than 4 in x 4 in. If that's your case, you can choose 4x4 post base instead of 4 in x 4 in. It is confusing sometimes.

What size anchor bolts to you recommend to secure a 4 x 6 post

Asked by David May 7, 2017

Answer

The ABA46RZ requires a 5/8" diameter anchor bolt to the concrete (anchor bolt type, length and embedment is specified by the designer). A quantity of 8 - 16d common nails (0.162" diameter x 3 1/2" long) are required to fastener to the post. Thank you!

These Simpson Post bases come in sizes for 4x4 to 6x6 dimensional and rough cut lumber. They make installation clean and easy. A 5/8" concrete anchor holds them in place (adjustable refers to the mounting hole, which is oval and allows a 1" position adjustment). 6 fasteners attach the post. They provide the required post standoff from concrete. This is a very good system: they provide various models for different load requirements and one made from stainless in highly corrosive environments, they also offer post tops to attach to your structure. A highly recommended resource is Simpson's web site full of resources and specifications, as well as their printed catalog with information of load limits, fasteners etc
