what kind of screws/bols can i use to attach the post to the base?

8x8 timber post can be fastened to ABU88Z base with either 18 - 16d(0.162")x3 1/2" common wire nails through the smaller diameter holes or 8 - 1/4"x3" SDS wood screws (model # SDS25300) through the larger holes. The nails need to be hot-dip galvanized. The screws are also sold at Home Depot. Regards.

Do you use nails or screws to fasten post to anchor

Answer

The ABU88Z anchors to the concrete with 2 - 5/8" diameter anchors and the post attaches to the base with 18 - 0.162 x 3 1/2" nails. Thank you!

Will this Post Base works with an 8"x10" Cedar Post?

If you don’t mind the overhang it should work fine.

Can this be used for a 6" x 8" post?

Answer

We would not recommend the ABU88 be used with a 6x8 post. There are various concerns including water sitting on the standoff (if exterior), load reductions (post won't bear on the vertical edges of the standoff which take a lot of the load), we do not have testing for the condition and fasteners would be close to the edge of the 6x post. We would suggest the ABU66 and let the post hang over. There would be no load issues in this condition other than the fact that it would be limited to the ABU66 loads(which are pretty close to the ABU88 loads). Thank you!

This model is for 8'' x 8'' posts.

Will this fit a true 8x8 post

No. I had to do some creative metal bending. I wasn't difficult with a sledge hammer and screws.

What is the rated upload resistance for this unit if used with Red Head Wedge Anchors that are 5/8" X 5"

Answer

The ABU88Z has an allowable uplift capacity of 2,320 lbs., but is up to the Designer/Engineer of Record to design the anchorage and specify the anchor bolt type, length and embedment. There are various factors to be considered (i.e. concrete strength, how close to the edge the anchors will be installed, etc.). Thank you!

These are not TRUE 8X8 in. Actually 7.5x7.5 in. I needed these for 8x8 cedar posts for my back porch. The cedar posts are true 8x8 inches, therefore I had to do some creative metal bending. This was OK because I will be covering the lower part of the post with stone veneer. The metal base will not be seen for my project.

I’m no contractor but my structural engineer suggested these in his plan. After ordering them and looking at the quality, it seems that they are the gold standard for strong ties. They cost quite a bit but knowing that my engineer suggested these makes me sleep soundly at night.
