Answer This Question

A:  Hi Gregg, thank you for your message. We want to make sure we address your question regarding ABW Adjustable Post Base. The choice of which post base to use for your addition has a few factors at play you will need to answer. The demand loads on the base in download and uplift as well as any lateral load are the main factors. We would be happy to discuss this with you and answer additional questions, please contact the Simpson Strong-Tie Customer Service team at 800-999-5099. We look forward to hearing from you. -Stacy

      A:  Yes.

      by|Apr 28, 2023

A:  Hello Pye3letterslSaname, thank you for reaching out with your question. The ABW ZMAX Adjustable Post Base has our proprietary ZMAX zinc finish. This finish is considered a medium corrosive-resistant finish and is compatible with most pressure treated lumber that is sold. If you are purchasing a special kind of treated lumber that is not readily available and requires a certain blend of chemicals that are specific to the project, it may require more information from the lumber company that is applying the chemical treatment to determine if there will be some compatibility issues with our products. Additionally, I would suggest to use a similar zinc coated / hot dip galvanized fastener, or, our Simpson SD9112 connector screws. If you have any additional questions, please contact our Technical Support team at (800)999-5099 and we would be happy to assist you.

A:  but I need to be able to move the post around and this base looks like it would keep the post from sitting in water... Surely there is some sort of 'stand' if this is not it? Any ideas?

          by|May 28, 2020

A:  Since it just sits on the slab I would not recommend it, I just used a hammer drill and put in a cement screw and it worked great

Q:What is the difference between this item (ABW44Z) and the ABA44Z?

            Answer This Question

A:  The ABW fastens to the post on all 4 sides. The ABA only fastens to the post on 2 sides. So, the ABW has a stronger load rating.

A:  The difference is the product dimensions. Model ABA44Z has a depth of 3.063, height of 3.125 and width of 3.563 compared to ABW44Z's 3.563 in depth, 2.25 in height and 3.563 in width.

Simpson redesign needed or Home Dep needs to find an alternate provider of standoffs...84 Lumber came close.
Simpson has a quality product. I used multiple 4X4 and 6X6 standoffs to replace rusted hardware that had been in place for years (beach installation). I had 2 problems...when I purchased the lumber is not 4X4 and 6X6. It is 3.5X3.5 and 5.5 X 5.5 and it shrunk over years...I used anvil and sledge-hammer to remake the Simpson standoffs. Second problem was the Simpson riser was 1 inch. My old riser was 1.5 inches...so I had to find sturdy shims to fill the 4x4 and 6x6 gaps (not trivial since my deck was 12 ft by 45 ft and 12 ft above ground...aka really heavy). I will use Simpson again but I hope they factor reality into new design.

I used the 2 holes in the bases' bottom to secure with Tap Con screws. It felt good and securely fastened to the concrete floor of my patio! Thank you. Mike
