Questions & Answers

Hi, what size or model screws should i get?

Asked by Jo July 15, 2020

Answer

The ABW46Z attaches to the post with a quantity of 10 - *0.148" diameter x 3" long common nails or 10 - SD9112 structural connector screws. It anchors to the concrete with a 1/2" diameter anchor; anchor bolt type, length and embedment to be specified by the Designer/Engineer of Record. (*hot dip galvanized nails with the Z-MAX connectors) Thank you!

Can this be used without using the bolt into the concrete just to keep the post off the concrete ...

but I need to be able to move the post around and this base looks like it would keep the post from sitting in water... Surely there is some sort of 'stand' if this is not it? Any ideas?

How deep do you need to pour concrete?

Asked by Jared April 15, 2020

Answer

Sorry I did not have to pour concrete. I did drill to install the anchors and the concrete was approx 5 in thick. I installed large 6x6 cedar posts, everything is solid!!

What size wedge anchor diameter is required?

Asked by LB August 20, 2019

Answers

I would not use anything smaller than a 1" expansion anchor minimum of 4" long. This is presuming you are attaching the standoff on a concrete support.

What size anchor bolt fits through the bottom and what size screws do you use to secure the post?

Asked by Brian April 23, 2019
1
Answer

I used 1/2” anchor bolts (make sure the are galvanized or stainless). Also you don’t use screws to secure the post. Because it is an application where the fastener will experience significant shearing nails are recommended here. Again make sure they are galvanized. I would do a quick web search for Simpson strong ties online catalog that has all of this information.

What is the difference between this item (ABW44Z) and the ABA44Z?

Asked by Ryan April 15, 2019
1
Answer

The difference is the product dimensions. Model ABA44Z has a depth of 3.063, height of 3.125 and width of 3.563 compared to ABW44Z's 3.563 in depth, 2.25 in height and 3.563 in width.

How much adjustment ( up

Asked by Bigmatt April 2, 2019

Answer

I'm not sure what you are asking but I can tall you this is what you need to protect a supporting wood column from a concrete support. I used a 1/2" expansion anchor drilled into the concrete and then set the wood post into the galvanized base with galvanized screws. This procedure meets all necessary Codes.

Can this be used to attach a 4x4 post to concrete patio for use in a railing system?

Asked by gigemsteve07 March 24, 2019
1
Answer

Post bases do not provide adequate resistance to prevent members from rotating about the base and therefore are not recommended for non-top-supported installations (such as fences, railings or unbraced carports). We do not have a base to recommend for railing applications to existing concrete. Thank you!

Are there holes in the base for anchoring this to wood using screws or nails?

Asked by Jeff July 4, 2018

Answer

Yes, there are holes for anchor bolts.

I'm replacing a post that's holding up a small corner (7'x10') of the house, which seems to be do...

Asked by PT August 29, 2017

Answer

sounds like your problem is at the attched beams or supports...Anchoring the deck or roof or floor to the proper upper support beams is critical to keep the post level and upright ... Do not worry about the 1" gap as it is stronger than the post itself. it helps keep termites away from the wood as a disruptor to their food source. Very strong metal. I have used these for years with no problems what so ever.

I was moving a patio cover post and needed one of these. It's really nice because the bottom of the wood post sits inside this a good inch off the ground. Really protects the post from water that could collect around the base of the post.
