Can I use this to connect double 2x6 beams to a 4x4 post?

Asked by Pushek September 4, 2020

Answer

The AC4Z requires both the beam and post to be the same thickness. For a double 2x beam on a 4x post, the LP4Z or BCS2-2/4 would be *options. *It is up to the Desinger/Engineer of Record to specify the appropriate connector based on framing layout, demand loads, local building codes, etc. Thank you!

The application described is not clear, but the AC4Z requires 0.162" diameter x 3 1/2" long nails. It is up to the Designer/Engineer of Record to specify the appropriate connector for the specific application based on framing layout, demand loads, local building codes, etc. Thank you!

Can a pair of these be used to connect a triple-2x beam to a 6x post?

A triple-2x beam will be 4.5" wide (1.5" x 3), so you will either have to add a piece of scrap 2x in their to make it 6" wide or get a difference column cap for a 6x post that is adjustable (you'll buy 2 of them, one for each side).

Answer

We would suggest a Designer be contacted for assistance with your deck design as we are unable to provide design advice. We can mention that footnote 5 on the AC4Z page in our catalog/on our website states "Uplift loads do not apply to spliced conditions. Spliced conditions must be detailed by the Designer to transfer tension loads between spliced members by means other than the post cap." Thank you!

Is this for rough lumber (4") equivalent to simpson AC4RZ, or is it for a finished 4x4 post (3.5")?

Asked by Sharon October 25, 2018

The AC4Z is sized for nominal 4x4 (3 1/2" actual); the AC4RZ is sized for rough (true) lumber. Thank you!

A sturdy and flexible construction helper.
I bought the cap when I saw that after a tough winter the deck supports on the home I purchased begin to move off the beams. I have a wrap around deck that angles to the kitchen which was designed with 3 anderson sliders like a giant bay window. Standard decking doesn't work and to keep the post steady after lifting the deck a bit with a jack and re- centering I wanted a firm hold to join the deck and the post. I was able to flex the top of the post cap on one side so it followed the taper of the deck and set everything with decking screws. Nothing will move now and I am confident that I wont end up with a costly repair later or worse- a falling deck.
