Q:Would a slab be deep enough to use these for a pergola off a house? Or do I need to dig a deeper footing?

Answer This Question

A:  Hello Curious, my name is Colin with Simpson Strong-Tie. The interior grade CB Galvanized Column Base for 4x4 Nominal Lumber (part number CB44) requires a concrete foundation that is a minimum of 11" deep and provides 3" minimum "side cover" around the 3-9/16" x 3-9/16" base plate that is flush with the poured concrete. I suggest you review this part, the published allowable load values, required hex head machine bolts, and the foundation specifications with a qualified design professional. The CB44HDG has an exterior grade galvanization suitable for a typical medium corrosive environment. If you need more information or have additional questions, please contact the Simpson Strong-Tie Customer Service team at 800-999-5099. We look forward to hearing from you

Q:Is there any way the Veranda 4 in. x 4 in. x 100 in. White Traditional Post Jacket will slide down over this post base once installed? I'm assuming the machine bolt could be cut off such that only the head and nut protrude from the base itself.

    Answer This Question

A:  Hello again akai, it's Colin with Simpson Strong-Tie. The cast-in-place CB Galvanized Column Base for 4x4 Nominal Lumber (CB44) was tested with 2 each 5/8" diameter ASTM Standard A307, Grade A, hex-head machine bolts and nuts. Once installed the machine bolt head and/or nut should not be cut off. I cannot answer your questions if the Veranda 4 in. x 4 in. x 100 in. White Traditional Post Jacket will slide down over this post base once installed. If you need more information or have additional questions, please contact the Simpson Strong-Tie Customer Service team at 800-999-5099. We look forward to hearing from you.

Q:What's the Simpson number? Can't tell if these are Hot Dip Galvanized

      Answer This Question

A:  Hi Homer, thank you for your message. We want to make sure we address your question regarding the CB68 finish. The CB68 is finished in a low level corrosion protection referred to as G90 Galvanization. If you want to get the CB in a Hot-Dip Galvanized which is suitable for exterior applications you would want to order the CB as CB68HDG If you need more information or have additional questions, please contact the Simpson Strong-Tie Customer Service team at 800-999-5099. We look forward to hearing from you. -Stacy

A:  Hi Jo, thank you for your inquiry. The CB44 requires (2) 5/8" diameter structural quality through-bolts (not lag screws or carriage bolts) equal to or better than ASTM A307 Grade A. If you need more information or have additional questions, please contact the Simpson Strong-Tie Customer Service team at 800-999-5099. Thank you-Colin

Build exterior stair railing using these 4x4 column bases for the posts, set in concrete. Poured the dry, fast-setting concrete mix into the hole, placed the column base into the mix, then added the water, and after a while smoothed the concrete out. Worked like a charm and is so solid, you could park a truck on it (if that was possible ;). - NOTE: Use thick gloves when handling the column bases as they have razor sharp edges!

Overall, very pleased with these! Most of them came need to be sledge hammered into level with the plates being over the nubs. In use, very easy to set and work with. Seem pretty strong in holding the 4x6 in place for my pole barn

Used for 10" - 12" logs to support a deck extension and a stair platform to a treehouse. The logs were shaved down to fit into the Base Supports and the quality of the metal is excellent. The new ones are being used because older ones from 2008 are still in perfect condition.
