Product Overview

Simpson Strong-Tie straps and plates join and reinforce joints with simple, versatile solutions for a wide range of connections. Available in many lengths, widths and thicknesses, straps can be used on the wide or narrow face of lumber for light repairs or heavy-duty projects. Many straps are designed to be used back-to-back on a piece of lumber without fastener interference. The CTS218 is designed to repair wood members such as top plates, studs and trusses and is our first strap that handles both tension and compression loads. The unique rolled edges of the strap allow it to span gaps as wide as 4-1/2 in. and its 1-1/2 in. width enables installation on the narrow face of 2x lumber.
  • Tested specifically for top/bottom plate repair with various multi-strap configurations
  • One-sided installations — install one or two CTS straps on the same side of the member
  • Two-sided installation — install CTS straps on opposite sides of member
  • For three-part installations, install two parts on one side, one part on opposite side
  • Width: 17-7/8 in.

Questions & Answers

3Questions3Answers

Can this be used to reinforce a floor joist that has been drilled for plumbing? Either above or below the pipe?

Asked by Mitch October 28, 2018

Answer

Though one of our straps, plates or fasteners may be an option, we do not have a product specifically designed/evaluated to reinforce notched, cut/drilled or cracked joist members. We have to recommend a local engineer be consulted to detail a proper repair. Thank you!

Can these be installed with the lip embedded into the wood?

Asked by Mike August 28, 2018

Answer

We can only support the installation as designed/rated (with the rolled edges out). Thank you!

Answer

The CTS218 is rated with 10d x 1 1/2" nails or SD #9x1 1/2 structural connector screws. Thank you!

These are great. I needed structural plates to repair studs and top plates that were over bored by a contractor. The cost and time to remove and replace the studs would have been dramatically more. I really appreciate that Simpson specifies the structural ratings, fasteners, and provide application information for their products.

Had a good experience using these. Look up Simpson's catalog info on these straps for details - for instance the loads and thickness (3/8") were important for my project.
