Can I use these to connect a double 2x10 beam to a 4x4 post for a flat roof deck patio?

Asked by Michael January 23, 2021

Answer

A pair of LPC4Z can be used for connecting 2-2x10 beam to the top of 4x4 post. LPC4Z is a half-cap. A pair of these can be placed on top of 4x4 and its positioning adjusted to fit 3"-wide beam. Hope this answers your question.

Answer

We can only support our products as designed/tested; the LPC is rated for wood-to-wood applications. Also, we do not support field modified products. Please see the ABU46Z at the follwoing link (scroll down to "Beam Installation") for a possible option: https://www.strongtie.com/retrofitpostbases_postbases/aba-abu-abw_productgroup_wcc/p/aba.abu.abw#LoadTables. Thank you!

What size nail do I use with this post cap hardware? Post is 4x6 and the Beams are 2qty 2x8x12

Check with your local building inspector

Can strongdrive screws be used with this instead of nails?

No, The back of the Simpson Catalog has the screws vs nail substitution. In my case for the LPC6Z I used 8ea, 16d x 2-1/2 nails per bracket as there was no screw substitution given.

Could these be used to attach a beam to the rim joist?

The LPC4 is designed/tested as a post cap and must be installed in pairs. Thank you!

AC compatible?

Asked by MKT September 21, 2017

Answer

It is not clear what you are referring to when you say "AC". Are you trying to confirm if it is compatible with treated wood (i.e. ACQ-C, ACQ-D, ACQ-D Carbonate, ACZA, etc.)? The LPC6Z has the Z-MAX finish (G185) which provides a medium level of corrosion protection. Please see the Corrosion section of our website to determine the recommended finish for your specific application based on environment, type of treated wood being used, chemical retention, etc. Thank you!

Could 2 of these be used to attach a double 2x6 to a 6x6 post?

The brackets held the 3-ply 2x12 beams on top of the 6x6 posts. Hopefully the Zmax coating will do its job on protecting them in the long term.

This bracket install easily after the post and beam were set (compared to the BC46). Keep in mind that Two LPC brackets to attach post to beam may not always be a one to one substitution for the BC46 based on structural lateral loads.

The pieces are less "square" than I had hoped; and, I hadn't noticed the two small projections in the edge along the large flat side, I'm having to gouge out wood to let the beam sit as flat as I want.
