The LRUZ offers an economic alternative for those applications requiring a sloped hanger for rafter-to-ridge connections. Used with solid sawn rafters, the LRUZ's unique design enables the hanger to be installed either before or after the rafter is in place. The field-adjustable seat helps improve job efficiency by eliminating mismatched angles in the field and lead times associated with special orders. The LRUZ offers comparable or better load capacity to other rafter hangers at a reduced cost while using fewer fasteners.
The open design and ability to field-adjust the slope make the LRUZ ideal for both retrofit or new applications
Accommodates roof pitches from 0:12 to 14:12
Slopes up or down to 45-degrees (12:12) - for slopes greater than 45-degrees up to 49-degrees (14:12), allowable loads are 0.85 of table loads
For added versatility, the fasteners on the face of the hanger are placed high enabling the bottom of the rafter to hang below the ridge beam
For nominal rafter sizes: 2x6, 2x8
Seat width: 1-9/16 in.
Made from 18-Gauge steel
ZMAX galvanization offers extra corrosion resistance for exterior and treated-wood applications
Install with 0.148 in. x 3 in. nails, 0.162 in. x 3-1/2 in. nails or #10 x 1-1/2 in. or 2-1/2 in. Strong-Drive SD screws
Q:Can the LRUZ be used as an old work ridge tie so I can remove collar ties in my attic. House was build in 1945 and has ridge board with rafters against side, not on top w/collar ties directly below holding 2 x 8 (actual dimensions) against ridge board

Answer This Question
A:Â Hello Paul, this is Stacy with Simpson Strong-Tie. From my understanding collar ties are sometimes not needed if approved metal connectors were used to fasten the rafters to the ridge. In this case the LRUZ is a hanger for rafter-to-ridge connections and has an evaluation report in compliance with IBC and IRC. If you wish to discuss this further please call us at (800) 999-5099. We look forward to speaking with you.

Q:Do you need to cut your rafters for these to be used? I want to build a small lean to roof and wondering if the rafters need to be mitered for it to work.

A: Hi John, this is Colin from Simpson Strong-Tie. Yes, the LRU series come standard in our ZMAX finish. Our model # for a 2x10 is LRU210Z. "Light" refers to the gauge (18). It is load rated, see our website at www.strongtie.com and type in LRU in the searchbox to be directed to that product series homepage for more information including load tables. If you have additional questions, please contact the Simpson Strong-Tie Customer Service team at 800-999-5099. Thank you-Colin.

A: Generally a joist hangar should be used for lumber which it is made for dimensionally. So if the hangar is for a 2x6 joist or rafter then that’s the maximum size lumber that should be used with that hangar. The quantity and location of the fasteners on the hangars are there for that reason.Â

Answer This Question
A:Â Hi John, this is Colin from Simpson Strong-Tie. Yes, for joist hangers, Simpson Strong-Tie recommends the hanger height shall be at least 60% of joist height for stability against rotation while under construction. Additionally, we do have a model specifically designed for a 2x8 sized member and that is the LRU28Z. If you need more information or have additional questions, please contact the Simpson Strong-Tie Customer Service team at 800-999-5099. We look forward to hearing from you.

I purchased this Simpson Strong-Tie to install roof joists on a outside porch,to attach this to the wall of the house. I have used these before to install a roof with a slope and I have used Simpson Strong-Ties in my barn area over a 30 year period. They have a variety of ties for your project. Check with your local Home Depot to see them. Ret

To address the issue of limited head room, I used the ZMax Rafter Hanger at both ends of the rafters for a patio cover. Usually, rafters sit on top of a support header, but I butted the rafters into the header with the top of the rafter flush with the top of the header to increase head room underneath. The picture titled "Rafter Hanger at Header" shows that the roof sheets are flush with the top of the rafters and with the top of the header.
Note that the attachment holes are high up on the hanger, which permitted attachment to a fascia that was narrower than the rafter without compromising strength. The picture titled "Rafter Hanger at Eave" shows that the bottom of the rafter and lower portion of the rafter hanger are actually about an inch below the fascia strip.
Also to increase head room, the purlin strips (2 x 4 lumber) were cut to fit between the rafters, rather than run across the top of the rafters. The "Patio Cover" picture shows a view under the header between two support posts, and the purlin strips are visible overhead.
One note about installation... I used the recommended Simpson Strong-Tie screws instead of nails. I found it easier to insert the rafter if I attached the rafter hanger with two screws at one side, while leaving out the two screws at the other side until after the rafter was slipped into place.
