How is this different / superior to an L bracket?
Hi Sarge, this is Colin from Simpson Strong-Tie. The RTA2Z connects a 2x post to a 2x joist and provides download resistance (an angle would provide lateral load resistance). RTA2Z are often used in wood fences and have a corrosion resistant (ZMAX) finish. We have many different "L" angles so I can't comment on the superiority as we don't know which product we are comparing to the RTA2Z. Can you paint the angle? Is with what type of paint.

Would these be acceptable to use as a reinforcing mechanism for 2 LVL 2x12 (1' 3/4" x 11' 3/4") which are nailed together, and already in place on top of 2 2x jack studs? To be more specific: the beam is already installed to manufacturer guidelines; however, it's an old work project, and there are a lot of "colorful" things going on in the home. I'm simply wondering if this would be an acceptable additional reinforcement mechanism between the built up 2 ply LVL and the 2 jack studs. Thank you
I have used these for just that purpose. If the LVL is already supported with jack studs, then these used to just hold the jack studs to the LVL is fine. No weight is on them, they just prevent the LVL from sliding out of the pocket.
In my humble opinion, these Strong Ties are just not the right product. You need to use steel plate to reinforce not the sheet metal used to make these.
Does Simpson Strong -Tie make a connector to hold a 2x4 header in place without a cripple for support
It sounds as though you are looking for a Header Hanger which we offer, but not for a 2x4 header. Please see the HH4 here on the Home Depot website. Thank you!
