Can you use SD screws for this application?

Asked by Doug September 15, 2020

Answer

Yes, the SUR210Z can be installed with can be installed with the SD9112. Please see the second table at the following link for allowable loads with the SD screws: https://www.strongtie.com/facemounthangers_engineeredwoodconnectors/sur-sul-hsur-hsul_productgroup_wcc_ijoist/p/sur.sul.hsur.hsul#LoadTables. Thank you!

I have more of a 35 degree angle. Will these still work?

Answer

"Joist hangers are designed to provide support underneath the joist, rafter or beam to provide a strong a connection. SUL/SUR hangers provide a 45° connection between a joist and header. These hangers will normally accommodate a 40° to 50° skew." More than that may compromise the hanger metal strength.

Skewed at what angle? I'm looking for something that will work for about 30 - 35 degrees.

Answer

The SUR hangers are skewed at 45 degrees (can generally accomodate 40-50 degree skews). For a 30-35 degree skew, you might consider the LSSU hanger which is field adjustable (maximum 45 degrees). The hanger shown here is a single 2x10 hanger, but the description states double (we are working to get this corrected). If you indeed have a single 2x10, please see the LSSU210, or please see the LSSU210-2 if it is a double 2x10. Thank you!

Is the price for these correct??

As with all Simpson Strong-Tie products, this one is of excellent quality, if somewhat expensive. It is as easy to use and as functional as any other product of this type, and elongated holes on the narrow-angle side help in positioning & fastening. My only objection to this product is that there are no holes in the wide-angle side that provide toenail access for deep attachment of the joist to the beam. Straight hangers have such holes for angle-nailing deeply into the beam in a cross pattern. Perhaps engineering has shown these to be unnecessary, but I find myself nailing the joist to the beam before installing the hanger.

Excellent for a high volume spot where I wanted maximum joist strength on my deck at an angled step-down, but choose not to use them elsewhere due to high cost (around $11 each). Good toenailing still works well!
