Q:How to know if the hardware kit that I bought is for nominal or actual lumber?
by|Feb 12, 2024

Answer This Question

A:  Hello Angel, my name is Colin with Simpson Strong-Tie. The RTC2Z brackets in the WBSK Workbench and Shelving Hardware Kit are designed to be used with nominal (1-1/2") 2x lumber, typically 2x4-8' as listed in the instruction sheet included with the kit. If you need more information or have additional questions, please contact the Simpson Strong-Tie Customer Service team at 800-999-5099. We look forward to hearing from you.

A:  Hey HomeBeast, this is Ricardo with Simpson StrongTie. It should be fine to use the 19/32" plywood for this project. Hope it turns out well!

        Answer This Question

A:  Contact Simpson, the manufacturer. (800) 999-5099 or strongtie.com/diy . I'm not an engineer, but each RTC2Z connector has 12 holes for screws. There would be 8 connectors for your aquarium stand for 96 screws. You can find data for the connector here: https://embed.widencdn.net/pdf/plus/ssttoolbox/bpm6gjqjni/C-C-CAN2020-p325.pdf

A:  Hello Bill. My name is Colin with Simpson Strong-Tie. The RTC2Z brackets that come in the WBSK kit and installed with the provided SD#8x1-1/4" screws into Douglas Fir or Southern Yellow Pine lumber can resist 300 lbs of download force. On our home page strongtie.com, enter RTC2Z in the Search Strongtie.com field. Click on the photo of the bracket and scroll down to the published load table. If you need more information or have additional questions, please contact the Simpson Strong-Tie Customer Service team at 800-999-5099. We look forward to hearing from you.

Really good workbench kit! Precut lumber was a huge bonus, since I lacked the proper saw(s) to cut it correctly; worth the extra cost. Went together quickly and easily. They could have included a few more screws to properly attach the header board, but I had some extra carriage bolts to complete the job. I would recommend!

              Loose fit, strong when built.
I would have preferred that the pieces fit more tightly. The lumber was 1.5" thick (I checked) but the brackets were about 1.530" making the lumber fit too loosely. Because of the loose fit, I found it difficult to build square and I ended up drilling another hole in the stirrup holding the cross pieces. I was actually surprised there wasn't a hole there to begin with. Once assembled, the workbench is very sturdy.

It was so nice to find a product that was so easy to understand. After reviewing a few YouTube videos and taking a few notes I built my first workbench. It was so awesome and the parts went together smoothly. Here is the base of the worktable before the top and shelf went on it.
