You can attach the bottom to the dryer while it's away from the wall. Then push the drying back most of the way, climb on top of the dryer and reach dow behind it to attach the top connection. Then push all the was back, reach down (again from the top) and tighten the top screw. Not exactly easy or comfortable, but it is doable.

About 6 to 8 inches depending on how flat the back of your dryer. Clamping to wall vent requires access to tighten and backs of most dryers are not flat plane. Our old dryer has a removable connection which clamped to the the new vent and then snapped onto the dryer as it was moved to the back wall.
