The straps are smart, but I felt stupid just trying to get them out of the package!
These tie-down straps each come in two pieces – a 14’ (4.3 m) strap with a plastic-coated hook on one end, and a separate rachet mechanism attached to another hook. To use, attach the hooks to an appropriate anchor point, and thread most of the free end of the strap through a slot in the rachet, then use the rubberized lever on the rachet to take up the slack in the strap. I found the lever adequate to make the strap taut without much effort, and the release mechanism, also with a rubberized grip, worked with equal ease. A set of four of these straps is more than adequate to secure just about anything that would fit into the bed of my midsize pickup.
Microscopic printed instructions and warnings were attached to each of the long straps. Kudos for including them where they won’t get misplaced, but my ageing eyes needed a magnifying loupe to read them. If I could have read these instructions unaided, they would have benefitted from some illustrations, but with some playing around, I figured out how the mechanisms worked. Give yourself that time before using these straps and you’ll save yourself some frustration.
The packaging was also a source of frustration with a hefty plastic tray and numerous lengths of twisted wire securing the product to the tray. I needed pliers to grasp and untwist the wire as it took far too long to undo each wire with unaided fingers. The substantial heft of the plastic tray had me hoping that it could be used to organize and store the tie downs, but that was not to be. It wasn’t a complete loss as the plastic (PP#5) in the tray is recyclable.
The fine print says that these 1500 lb. straps are only rated for 1/3 of that, so don’t plan on securing more than 500 pounds per strap. Still – that’s quite a bit for my half-ton truck! These straps are well made, strong and easy to use; the only thing that kept them from that elusive fifth star in my review is the challenge of keeping them safe, neat, and organized when stored.
I've had plenty of these straps over the years and they are great to have around. I particularly like these straps as they are higher quality in many areas. I like the high visibility straps which is always good while you're working and for safety reasons. Heavy reenforced stitching on the straps offer peace of mind. I like the rubber handle on the straps and the also on the quick release tab, which makes loading and unloading cargo easy. There is a lot of length in these straps, making them great for many applications.

SmartStraps 14' 500 lb
These straps are awesome to tie things down. The ratchets allow you to secure loads. You never have to worry the tie downs will come untied.
The padding prevents any accidental paint scratches. The hooks let you use 2 straps for large loads, like hay bails. These smart straps are very versatile.

Super strong, non-marring coated steel S-hooks
While they are rated to 1500 pounds, that is the breaking strength of the strap, not the working weight of the straps, working weight is limited to 500 pounds. The metal in the ratchet appears a little thin and flimsy. While the stitching on the strap appears good, they didn’t take a little bit of time to align the two straps before sewing them together. This means that part of the stitching actually only went through one of the straps and I would really not trust it even to 500 pounds. Because of the poor workmanship and the assembly of these straps I cannot recommend it.
BACKGROUND: I can always use another set of straps. The chance to evaluate the SmartStraps model 145 was too good to pass up.
FIT AND FINISH: These straps are comparable to other straps in their price point.
FEATURES: From the Home Depot page, with my comments as appropriate.
• Padded grip and thumb release for more comfort and leverage.
o It is a more comfortable that plain metal.
• It uses SmartWeb technology which provides webbing that is stronger and more abrasion resistant than standard webbing.
o Not sure what the difference is. SmartStraps are the only straps using this term is. The straps don’t have any obviously different construction or weave than some of my other straps.
• It is strong, durable, and much more secure than rope.
o If you aren’t accustomed to securing cargo with rope this might be true. I just like the hook and ratchet straps.
• Strong and durable
o The working load limit is stated at 500 lbs. More than enough hold down tension for anything I do.
• Super strong, non-marring coated steel S-hooks
o I like S-hooks, but on most of mine the coating peels off after a few heavy tie-downs.
o It would be better for me if the strap attached to the buckle was longer; that is an issue for most of the straps I use. Two feet of strap would allow tying the buckle end around odd-shaped loads.
OPERATION: No different than my other S-hook ratchet straps.
SUMMARY: Worth the money
These are nice ratchet straps for small lightweight items. They are not for securing heavy items. I love the color of the straps. The ratchet padding is great and doesn't come off. These would be great if they were one or two feet longer, so they could secure a load from the bed of a truck instead of from the rails. Otherwise, they work well, no problems tightening or loosening them like other ratchet straps.
own a construction business. I got this strap a week ago, and i have used this strap daily to tie down my equipment. The strap has been very easy to work with. So far it has not let me down. Its made of good quality materials. The strap waa very easy to put together, and takes abuse very well. I would not hesitate to buy another one of these straps.
These SmartStraps Tie Downs work in the typical fashion with two parts, the strap with hook and a ratcheting part with a hook that receives the other part and winds up the slack. These are 14 feet long by 1 inch wide with 1500 pounds strength which is more than adequate for most applications. They should not be used for lifting overhead for safety reasons though. I am very pleased with these tie downs.
This is a handy pair of tie downs. Because they aren’t as long as others, they are perfect for those instances where you are strapping down something small, like a tool box or lawn mower. The shorter length of the straps makes it so you don’t have to bundle up 10 feet of extra strap, which is very nice. The ratcheting feature works well, I haven’t had any problems with it. Overall, this is a good pair of ratchet tie downs.
I will start by saying that I'm no expert on ties down straps, but these seem to be good. Oh, and if you are new to ties downs, you will need to find a video on how to attach the end to the racket because the instructions are not much help (the print is TINY and not very detailed). Also, I was a bit surprised at how thin the straps are, so I can only assume that the 1,500 lb break strength is accurate. Other than that, the racket mechanism is quite hefty and easy to operate once you figure it out. Another thing to note is that these straps are only 6 feet long so keep that in mind to be sure they're long enough for your desires uses.
