Can this wire be used to wire a security system attic horn

Asked by: tony
Thermostat wire is used for all of your thermostat wiring needs. Home Depot carries our shielded and unshielded security cable for these types of installations. You would need to check with the manufacturer of that particular security sytem to see if the thermostat wire was sufficient for that application.

We are somewhat horrified that this is really the only brand available- We spent all day trying to thread this cable through the walls to upgrade out thermostat. Finally after hours of work, cutting access holes, we were sucessful. What happened? The wire is shorting out. Took a sample piece, gently made 2 cuts around a long piece to remove the outer sheath to discover that the wires inside are not insulated- the inner insulation is split all over the place along the length. This is NUTS! Now we have to find another source for the wire. (and no, this was not along parts that got run through possibly damaging the wire- this was at the excess). Then come on here to find that we were not the only ones, this was not a one off. Find another source for your wire. Southwire is clearly having manufacturing or materials problems.

Ran 50ft in my walls and wondered why my boiler was turning on even though I didnt yet connect the thermostat. Tested and found continuity even when disconnected. Tested a brand new spool out of the box and same result. Absolute garbage.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Southwire Moved thermostat in sons house and what should have been a 1 1/2 job turned into 3 hours because the Southwire thermostat wire is junk. After switching off new and old thermostats and calling Honeywell for help we isolated the problem to being the wire. Picked up Honeywell thermostat wire at a plumbing store and tomorrow going back to rerun wire. Another hours work. Lesson to be learned, stay away from Southwire products.
