Our easy-to-use, fast-acting insect, lawn disease and weed control solutions help you tame lawn and landscape invaders with incredible pest-punishing power. Take command with Spectracide brand. You hold the power. Spectracide Fire Ant Shield Mound Destroyer Granules is a deep-reaching formula for use directly on fire ant mounds. Made with our exclusive Accelerator II technology to speed the release of the active ingredient into the mound, this product starts to kill in minutes. It kills the queen and colony in 24 hours and limits new mound formation. Use these granules to treat new mounds as they appear – sprinkle over and 2 ft. around each mound. For best results, apply Spectracide Fire Ant Shield Mound Destroyer Granules in morning or evening hours. At these times, fire ants are closer to the surface, virtually ensuring the product will contact them. Water in gently, as high-pressure spray may disturb ants and cause migration, reducing product effectiveness.

I'm not sure I have used it in my garden to kill fire ant mounds and not noticed any problems. You need to read the directions to be safe.

Is it safe around pets?

I poured the granules down the red-ant holes with a plastic container, as best I could. Those biting ants were gone the next day. But I would keep pets away. Ingredients kill ants, which are small, so the granules might make a cat or small dog sick.

How much granules is needed for the ant mound, does watering a must? Will the ant bring the granules back by themselves?

Used 1/2 cup and watering is necessary. The package is big enough to do the job on multiple ant hills.

After you use it how do you clean it up? Or do you just leave it?

I left it.

How long should you keep pets away from the mounds after treatment?

Hi Jess. Apply the granules and water in as directed on the label. Once the treatment areas are completely dry, it's ok for pets to go back out onto the lawn.

This is to get rid of the mounds, so I think it would depend on how many mounds you have in your lot. I tend to use more than what the directions state, and I think they do make a larger bag. I'm not sure this is meant for general broadcast as prevention.

What happens when it is wet and come in contact with your normal clothing?

I used a watering can to put the water on the mounds. By using that, I controlled the rate of water coming out, and did not get any Granules on my shoes or clothes.

Works on some ants sorta

Tried this product on a few varieties of ants around the property with mixed results... The poison more or less works on the black fire ants with the red butts. This product also seemed to work on the tiny all black ants seemingly stopping them or very least driving them further away... The all red bodied fire ants I bought this product for primarily has had little effect... The swarm just moves away and comes back the next day or so; via a new mound/ hole... The poison killed a bunch of them on the surface. It is a poison with a strong poison odor when you open the bag. However doesn't seem to actually stop the problem. As a granule ant bait poison they don't seem to actually want to carry the granules back to their nest to kill their queen. Perhaps not very appetizing to them? Bag does say suppose to stop the queen and the colony... After a number of days and attempts at ridding the ant problem seems like the product has been a waste of money... Money maybe better used to buy a known to work ant poison at the specialty pest control store. The home depot store I went to had another bag by the same manufacture in a silver pouch for a few dollars more but comparing the bags other than different graphics and colors they seemed to contain the same ingredients and concentrations of. But the silver bag costs more for less product sooo I opted for the orange one. I likely going to avoid other products by this brand due to its lack luster results...
