Why is the front completely black? It doesn't show the description like the pictures show on the box. Theres no description at all. If you were to open the panel door you wouldn't know what it is. Is this normal?

Hello Mewq. It was an engineering design decision to make the device completely black. However, it has the same indication light like the old design to tell the status of the SPD. Warm regards. Schneider Electric Customer Care

Is it required that the SPD go in the top-most/first slot closest to the supply? Or can it go in any available double slots available?

        Answer This Question

Hi SMRTech, It is not required, but it is a recommendation. The SPD requires two adjacent mounting spaces and should be installed as close to the main circuit breaker, or main lugs as possible. So that in an event of surges, it will be the SPD near the main breaker to absorb all the surges to avoid any leakage downstream. Warm regards. Schneider Electric Customer Care

Will it work if installed in a sub-panel?

          Answer This Question

Hello Paul, The QO2175SB can still be installed in a sub panel, it is actually recommended to have an SPD per panel. This is what we call the "cascaded protection". Hello Dennis, This device is not designed or tested to fit on another manufacturer's equipment since it will void UL listings and the Warranty as well. Each manufacturer has it's own UL listings for their specific products based on their specific product line and their specific combination of products. Regards, Schneider Electric Customer Care

                  Doesn't fit very old panels
Beware that this unit does not fit older panels. I called Schneider Electric to verify this. My old panel is model QO30-40MW 200 and this device will not plug onto it. They don't sell any device which fits. I'll have to use an externally-mounted surge device instead. They should modify the description to specify how to tell if this device will fit your QO panel or not.

Now I have piece of mind having my whole house protected by the Square D Surge device plus have extend protection up to $10K. When upgrading my generator transfer switch last month, the recent city code required this device. The local wholesale supply house was out of stock so I checked Home Depot. Home Depot's cost was $30.00 (+ freight) less plus I could have it delivered freight free the next day. The whole process went very smoothly. This has met my expectations.

A straightforward installation. Simply moved existing breakers in one row, down 2 slots to make room at the top for the Surgebreaker. Snapped in and connected neutral. Now I have piece of mind regarding my sensitive electronic devices!

Pruchased 2 since I have 2 panels. Breakers arrived when expected. easy to install. So easy I went ahead a installed a couple more for a friend. took 10-15 minutes to complete 2 panels. I won't know how well they work until the next lightning strike. Last lightning strike cost me several thousand dollars. Hopefully these will help.

Pretty sure it saved us from a lot of damage
South Florida. Had lightning strike my power pole this afternoon. So far I've discovered it blew out a power supply for my modem and an LED light fixture in the garage. I installed one of these SPDs last summer. It's cheap. It's easy to install if you have a little knowledge on residential electrical hardware. As title suggests, I think it saved us from a lot more damage. There's no way to know for sure, but I'm pretty confident it's true. Best part - the SPD is still alive in my panel.

I installed one of these in my load center and another in my in-laws. It's easy to install and provides surge protection for your entire home. Just make sure you install it in the first two breaker slots so the surge is diverted to ground before it reaches any of the other circuits.

                      Easy Install for great protection
I don't know why the stores don't keep these in stock. They are an easily installed option for whole house protection. It literally took less than 10 minutes and that included moving the stove breaker so I could place this near the feed. Make sure you have the right type (QO) breaker panel. Turn off the main. Snap it in. Turn on the main. DONE!

The directions state that the preferred location is at the top of one of the banks of circuit breakers so if necessary move two down (obviously after turning all breakers off, then shutting off the main breaker). Then reverse the process, turning the main breaker on then flipping each breaker on one at a time until all are on. I had one nearby lightning hit that may have caused a surge and damaged electronics and appliances. This surge protector appeared to work perfectly, turning off everything momentarily and back on in an instant. It also looks cool and finishes off a perfect panel installation. A must have for a new Square D QO 200 amp panel.
