Questions & Answers

Does the hotter temperature mean it makes a stronger bond than the lower temperature?

Stanley dual temp glue sticks?
Asked by: Gluestick
Yes. The best bond to wood, metal and plastic is performed at the high application temperature (typically 380 deg F), but that temperature is too hot for sensitive materials like jewelery, fabric, paper, styrofoam and ribbons, so a low application temperature (typcally 250 deg F) is used there. A dual-temperature glue can be applied at either temperature but for the different purposes. Note that applying to wood at 250 deg F would not be as effective as applying at 380 deg F. Dual-temp glue guns typically have a switch to select either temperature. I gleaned the above information from the Surebond website. The comments apply to retail products. Some industrial specialty adhesives use even higher temperatures. Most mini glue guns (which use 5/16" diameter sticks) are low-temperature. A full size glue gun (which uses 7/16" diameter sticks) that I've seen is high temperature. Since dual-temp glue melts at the lower temperature, don't be fooled into applying the glue before your gun gets up to full temperature if you need the high temperature.
