Picked this item a few weeks ago for a home project and to learn how to use hand tools. The only thing to remember is that the iron (blade) is not really sharp. You will spend a few hours sharping it. But when you get done, it peels shavings as thin as onion skin. The adjusting knob is easy to use, you can adjust it on the fly by using your index finger. If you don't have a plane and you need one, get this one. Nice.

Considering the cost and what you get for a Vintage Stanley #4, I decided to give this a try. I compared this to my other vintage Stanley #4's and this is what I found. The blade iron needed the usual flattening and honing, as with any brand, but I really have no complaints about. It was ground square and has a hollow back, so sharpening was a breeze. The cap iron edge needed to be flattened where it contacts the blade iron. I was surprised at how thin and flimsy the cap iron is. A bit disappointed with this. The adjustments work well. The lateral lever was tight so a slight bending up and down loosened it just enough to my liking. The brass nut that advances/retracts the blade operates smoothly; although the threaded post is a little wobbly, it's still secure. The yoke is a solid one-piece design and moves without binding. The frog adjustment works ok, but works better after refining the frog itself. I was disappointed with the frog. In taking it apart, I found it poorly cast with the contact points coarsely ground, uneven, and overall greatly reduced surface area of contact. Using sandpaper on granite, I spent a lot of time flattening most areas of contact. I also sanded the frog bed to smooth those surfaces as well. The plane body and the sole... oh my, the sole. So this is the worst part and what I spent hours on, and it's still not flat. Starting with sandpaper on granite, I gave up after 1.5 hrs with very little progress. I went to the benchtop belt sander (outside with dustmask) and wore out a new Diablo 80 grit belt with less than 40 percent surface area touched. The sole and sides have deep, coarse grinding that takes a significant amount of work to flatten and square. I finally gave up after much frustration, and will go back later when I get a new belt. After all the fettling, I finally put it to the test. The plane cannot glide smoothly over any wood edge because the coarse grinding is still in the center-most part of the sole. However, on a wide board it did glide freely without drag. The blade produced wispy-thin shavings like my other planes, without chatter, so no complaints there. Adjustments were easy to make and stayed where set without moving by itself. One of the best features about this plane is its weight. Its not heavy like high priced ones; with a sharp blade i can work this plane 3-4 times longer than the heavy ones. Push the plane, don't bulldog it. Keep it set properly with a razor sharp blade and you'll produce the finest, smoothest surface with very little effort and time. Despite the planes shortcomings, some fettling results in a plane that works really well. Wish Stanley made a # 5-1/2.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good alternative to #4 smoothing plane I'm a novice to woodworking, do not know the finer details of the tools yet, but I liked this one. Got the job done. Just so the buyer knows, the instructions ask you to hone it with a different angle before starting to use. I did try it without honing and then with honing and I did see the difference. it is much smoother after the honing. The reason I give 3 start for quality is because, the handles are made of plastic and if you have worked with wood handles, you'll see there is a hige difference when handling the plane. This plastic handle is not very comfortable, but you can easily replace the rear handle with a wood one - with an extra expense.

The sole needed a lot of flattening which is to be expected on low end planes. Honed and adjusted the iron and frog. It shaves pretty well now.
